[curiosity] what is the business strategy of jolla on mobile device market [not relevant]

I have a simple question to the jolla-people. About what is their motivation on the mobile device market. I don't which kind of info could be given. Is surely limited. Currently there is just the Jolla phone that some people called as J1. It comes a J2, and some people speak about a J3. Some people on internet speculate about a connected clock.

For my part i thought, that J1 as is particularity with its toh. pretty good concept. And thought that J2, J3 and Jn should have it and should be compatible. But after a while, and some thinking. Maybe it is healthy to diversify the device in different family. A jolla TOH-family where all jolla phone has the toh concept, and in this way, the toh compatibility is preserved. A jolla Phablet (for example) family, where toh are obsolete, but other concept are in front. A beginner family, as cheaper, smaller (i don't know). A connected object familly (clock,headset,...)

It is just a curiosity for me, a question that i want to ask to jolla. Because i try to bring some idea, here by together. And the need what i have is to know in which direction goes more or less jolla, just to know in which kind of idea i don't need to bring, because it is not the jolla strategy. If you see what i mean.

Which place of the market is the goal of jolla? what is their future? that will interest me strong.

Best regards

blog.jolla.com would be the place to read about this.

@ossi1967 sorry i didn't see your comment. why do think that the blog is a better place for this question?

@eric sorry seems that we need a jollaman to answer the question maybe you could find the appropriate person for this? will be nice. thanks a lot in advance...

@cemoi71: Just a thought. There's more about the company and its business on blog.jolla.com while here on TJC people talk more about the product and technical issues. I just thought that maybe people who could answer your question would rather gather on blog.jolla.com. - But then, it's typically the kind of question that doesn't get answered at all. What you'll see is product announcements when they happen, not announcements of future announcements.

hmm that is an idea. maybe i could ask it by a reaction of the subject looking afterward and forward...;-)

Bonjour! I think this article also roughly describes it in English.

Ok it show how they described themself, currently. they don't produce hardware. but it don't explain their perspective how their solution will take place on the the device market..

Thank you very much for your link ;-)

and jolla has collected 34M€ ! how? What is their other occupation and source? it's not clear for me. i don't want to bring confusion on jolla. I just want to have the feeling where they want to place itself, that i and other people could "adjust" my/our ideas on their strategy...

A far as I know this sum was collected from private investors.

is there other type of activities? like bring some solutions or make technical support for companies, or furnish device solution on business context?...
strange until now, there is no reaction from jolla-team.... for making the light

Like @lakutalo said the money came from investors. Their focus is on software side of the phone market since they don't have the money (and knowledge?) to build up manufacturing chain of their own. There are already dozens of manufacturers who make phones but don't have their own OS and their phones needs OS and Jolla is giving them an option other than Android.

They are planning to be a software company, the devices are moslty to show "real" manufaturers what Sailfish OS can so they might license the OS. Manufacturing new devices isn't supposed to be their core business.

@avhakola hmm sorry i don't believe you, because currently it seems that their only kind of financial income is by selling hardware. And i ask me how could we survive with an opensource and free os, with the same model for the apps... ;-)

http://www.tivi.fi/kaikki_uutiset/jolla+olemme+softa+emme+laitefirma/a1035987 The article is in finnish, but the title translates to "Jolla: We are a soft-, not a hardware company" so I won't believe we will ever see huge line of devices coming from Jolla. Probably new device every 2-3 years or so to keep showing what new hardware can do to the software and collect money from licensing fees from other manufacturers using the Sailfish OS.

@avhakola i am not an hero on finnish tongue, maybe you can help to confirm something.
The translation of google for the last paragraph bring " Fans and followers of the inclusion of a number of financial campaign is the perfect way to publish new product and at the same time to test the demand". Here we could not attribut the "new product" for a software. What do you think about it. The translation of the title ist too confused "Dinghy : we do not softa- device company" Dinghy, is clear is jolla. We do not software device?. It is a little bit confused, when we see in article that they bring new product on the market.

And the next question, how could they finance their business, if they don't produce their device? If you've right, they have no production, just design and concept, with software. And for the device, they look after a partner. It's a kind of branding. the same as google at the beginning of android, when they let produce the hardware to htc. For me is the financial income for android clear, through the advertisement and the app-cost on the store. But for jolla the financial income is no trivial on the first sight...

Anyway even if google not a device company too, they have a cleared device strategy on the market if you see what i mean.
What is the dream of jolla? all people have a dream where their business will take place

cemoi71 ( 2015-01-23 18:15:20 +0300 )edit

@cemoi71, High level representatives from Jolla have categorically stated that Jolla is a software company, there's not much clearer they can be on this subject.
