Apparently, the indiegogo campaign for the Jolla tablet has been extended to March 2015 end. If you haven't yet placed an order for the new Jolla tablet, please post why you are hesitating and / or not interested?

(P.S: I am not associated with Jolla in any way - This is just to get some feedback that Jolla might find useful.)

This is a strange question. Is it mandatory for Jolla fans to purchase the tablet? Do people have to justify their decision not to buy the tablet? I bought it, and I am not quite sure why. I think that Sailfish is actually still kind of Beta or post-Beta. Basic functions are unfinished, some things are unreliable and apps are missing. The thing for me is that I don't like to use an Apple, nor a Microsoft device and I don't trust Google's Android. Nokia left a gap and I hope that Jolla can fill it some day. So there is no other choice for me at the moment and I try to support Jolla as much as possible. It would be a more interesting question why people buy Sailfish devices and accept deficiencies rather than why not...

@sifartech why are you asking feedback, are you involved with the tablet project, are you asking feedback on behalf of jolla?

teun ( 2015-02-28 21:47:42 +0300 )edit

@Stefanix, @teun - To clarify, I do not work for Jolla nor am I associated with their company, employees or investors in any way. I am one of their customers, and a big fan of Sailfish OS. As such, I would like to see its user base grow. The feedbacks here may help them fine tune their strategy to increase their sales in March ... just like how the earlier feedbacks on the hardware of the tablet led to the decision to upgrade some parts of the tablet to make it more useful / desirable ...

I won't invest another boatload of money on a tablet from Jolla, while my Jolla phone still doesn't work as I would expect it to. I don't want to stimulate Jolla to divert resources. First I want Sailfish sorted, then I might think sbout something else!

@dsilveira - +1 for your thought because I share the same sentiment too. I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt though - most of the work on the tablet will still be related to Sailfish OS only, so it won't be much of a resource diversion, in my opinion. But yeah, they really should give some priority to getting the basic cellular features into Sailfish OS first ...

I have no use for a tablet. As simple as that :)

What feature would make you buy one? :)

Yep. It's as simple as that.

...and one day I might have a jollaDesk instead.

@vattuvarg - The hand gestures will get tiring on a JollaDesk ... and all the coffee stains and food crumbs ... I wonder if Gorilla glass 6 will be able to handle it all? :)

Not a feature, but a change of life. I work at home and rarely travel. When I'm at home I prefer to use KDE Plasma with a large monitor and a physical keyboard.

Tanghus ( 2015-02-28 16:50:59 +0300 )edit

@Tanghus - A tablet isn't meant to replace your desktop PC. It's a 'consumption' device meant for reading / browsing, watching movies, listening to music and to play games while curled up in your bed or lazing on a sofa. While there are some innovative apps for creating content (Autodesk ios apps, for exanple), the tablet will definitely not be replacing the PC any time soon. But it is good for 'consuming' content and more productive - if you want to quickly check your mail or browse etc., and sometimes puts less strain on your body than sitting in front of a desktop PC for the same purpose ... so it does offer a change of lifestyle, from a certain perspective. :)

I'm holding out for an updated Jolla Phone before committing to any further purchases, updated hardware will hopefully overcome the current slow/laggy experience. Additionally, native apps with functionality to match their Android counterparts will also help, but they're thin on the ground at the moment.

I realise that the above seems negative and slates Sailfish as an OS to some extent, but I am a fan of the OS and I genuinely hope that the current issues can be overcome to ensure that Sailfish becomes a real contender.

We all have the same complaints too, but still have great hopes for Sailfish OS ... 2016 would be my best guess - once they start shipping the tablet in mid-2015, they'll be busy the rest of this year trying to fix any hardware / software issues with it. So a Jolla Phone v2 would be possible only in 2016.

From my perspective, there's always tethering (which works great on Sailfish) with the Jolla phone. Even if you have a tablet, you'll always have your phone with you too, so it seems pointless to me (but of course, I can understand how built-in 4g can appeal to some).

My reason not having pre-ordered the laptop is the mobile phone not working as it is supposed to, so I need some actual user feedback of the tablets built quality before investing money in it. Story with the phone went pretty much like this: Received the phone --> shutdown problems --> warranty repairs (battery change) -> issue fixed--> speaker dying frequenty (small tap, got it back for a short time) --> send back to warranty repairs( speaker changed) --> did not fix the issue(plus did not find network anymore) --> send back to warranty(phone change)--> this changed phone has again the shutdown problem (but warranty time ended) so stuck with this...

Threads here say that the shutdown problems are caused by faulty batteries, and some have fixed it by placing paper etc to get better battery contacts.... which didnt help in my case. I WOULD try buying a new battery and pay it from my own purse, but those are not to be found... Jolla itself have not stated anything concerning these shutdown problems that many have.

Due to this, I changed the sim back to my old working N8 and Jolla laying inside my desk and waiting for a new battery before the second attempt of using it...

Yeah, I can see how frustrating that must be and why you have doubts. Occasionally, I too feel very impatient and irritated with Sailfish OS's progress. (Ofcourse, rationally thinking, I know its a small team but when you spend good money for something that fails to meet up to your expectation, one just wants to curse ... :)

Small display. I do't use portable aim. Resolution is good. But size is BAD. Need over 10 inch . and Usage 's direction is not decided.

Yep, completely agree. But would still buy to support Jolla / Sailfish though ... What do you mean by 'usage direction'?

I'd be interested in a tablet only if it lets me run desktop applications too. Instead, the Jolla is too focused on tablet use, which is too often too limited for anything but the most basic stuff. The hardware is capable of running e.g. LibreOffice (heck, the N9 could run LibreOffice with ease!), which could really help to view that old Word Perfect document someone just dug up or fix that stupid typo in your presentation. But lacking a mouse-like input such as stylus or clip-on keyboard + touchpad, and lacking HDMI, USB, make this too impractical.

In fact, Microsoft's Surface is a good example of what I want, were it not that it has Windows. It's more expensive of course, but you only need to buy one device instead of a tablet and a laptop.

I am not sure about desktop apps, as they would be a pain to use on a tablet given the small screen size. Even Microsoft had to rewrite office for the tablets. Keyboard / mouse could be connected using Bluetooth though. (Now a days, you get tablet cases with a key board built-in - so you don't need to worry about the lack of a "clip-on" keyboard.) And the tablet does have an OTG micro USB port too.

I agree that the Surface Pro 3 is a great concept: tablet and laptop in one device. Full pc functionality, yet highly portable. I own one, and it's great to work on.

I did buy the Jolla tablet, although that's more of a sympathy purchase. I really don't have much of a use case for a device of that size. It would be better if it could run Libre Office, and a good desktop mail client when needed.

bilgy_no1 ( 2015-03-01 17:22:16 +0300 )edit

@sifartech yes, running full desktop apps on such a small screen isn't practical. But impractical beats impossible. (a concept iDevice-users seem to miss :P)

Fuzzillogic ( 2015-03-02 20:21:49 +0300 )edit

@Fuzzillogic Just wait for Desktop apps to catch up with Wayland server. You should be looking at the KDE/QT apps which are more easily ported to Sailfish OS . There is a long pending demand to port KOffice or Caligra to Sailfish OS https://together.jolla.com/question/65413/port-calligra-gemini-to-sailfishos-as-native-office-suite/

pavi ( 2015-04-21 11:12:46 +0300 )edit

@pavi Even if(!) those applications become available on Sailfish, the current tablet still lacks a precise mouse-like pointing device and keyboard. I don't want to buy devices based on speculations or wishful thinking anymore.

I don't need a tablet because I can use Jolla phone to access internet, emails etc. if I'm not using a computer. I dont want yet another device to take care of (tune/update/spend time with) when I don't really need one. :)

  1. would love to but am afraid of the cost after shipping and taxes (I live in a country where the tablet isn't going to be launched anyway so I would have to buy it in the 2nd hand market - like what I did with my jolla phone, and boy, was it expensive!)

  2. I need a device where I can create content - not one where I consume content. a tablet doesn't really fit the bill for me. I need something with a keyboard, mouse, great portability (e.g. wifi + LTE, battery life that lasts 6-8 hours so I don't have to bring a heavy charger, lightweight, and ability to sit on a desk where the screen is angled for good viewing). what I need is an x86 compatible device (unfortunately, I use a lot of Office applications - Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

  3. I would consider buying the tablet once it becomes available in my country for use around the house (would make a great device for browsing the web just before going to sleep - which is what I do everyday with my Jolla phone).

I do wish to purchase the tablet, but hesitate for the following reason: shipping, taxes & duty.

Shipping - It is unclear how Jolla will be shipping the tablet to me in India. If the couriers are DHL / fedex, for example, these unethical bastards hold your package for ransom, demanding a 'customs handling fee' (which can range from $50 ~ $100+) even if you don't have to pay custom duty charges. (Yes, you read that right - they charge you extra, over and above any import duty charges to the customs).

Customs / Import Duty - AFAIK, I will have to pay the duty.

Taxes - Unsure if I will have to pay extra for the taxes in Europe / India.

(If all 3 would be applicable, I'd have to shell out another $100+ for the tablet ... )
