It seems you removed it from SFOS 2.0. It adds one more gesture before being able to launch something.
UPDATE: We now know it can be triggered when the home-screen is empty. Well, my home-screen is empty in two cases, after a reboot (usually a system upgrade) or after lipstick crashed... chemist

The problem with pulling up the app drawer is that it jumps to the top of the screen. This makes the favourites more cumbersome to reach, since you have to reach all the way to the top in order to tap them. After the pull, your thumb is not even half way from the bottom of the screen. So, to open a favourite, you have to move your thumb from the bottom of the screen all the way to the top. This = bad UX design.
If you can stop the pull somewhere half way (i.e. the app drawer covers only part of the screen) you can pull exactly to position the app you want to open at a comfortable height for your thumb.
As a work around, you can rearrange the app drawer to have your favourites just under the middle of the first page in the app drawer, but that's not an elegant solution of course...

The reason for this change is obviously to enable the vertically scrolling home-screen for use with more than 9 app covers.
With that in mind, what I would like to see is that the quick-app bar remains on the front screen until the 10th app is opened when it can be pushed back into the app-drawer. With small amount of app covers the screen space is there so it can obviously be visible without the need for additional gestures.

I really like how it was before, with the first row of the apps visible always on home screen. Reasons: - These are the most important apps that we access many many times per day. It is annoying to do one more gesture to open these apps. - When there is no opened app, the lock screen and the home screen are very very similar, where the only difference is the date/time in the lock screen.
I would suggest this behavior for the first row of the apps: - Always visible on home screen. Only hide them where there are >9 apps opened at the same time. - I really like the option to go the all apps screen from anywhere (e.g. when in another app, bottom edge swipe to open the all apps screen). I would keep the first row hidden when not in home screen, and we could access to this first row of apps together with the all other app screen when bottom edge swipe when we are anywhere but in home screen.

@ApB @chemist yes as id it told on the update the favourites are not removed.
they appears in an other kind of design trick....
definitively if the home has no cover (means no app are opened).
Then we tap on the screen then the first line of the app launcher (favourites) appears.
What i want to tell here in my answer here is
What kind of thinking is done by bringing an half solution, just to let appears if home is empty?
that is a strange user experience one i think.

but through a lot's problem it is currently not stable and and just build it for the more simple situation (empty home). hoping that none would see it so fast...
Don't know but seems to me that there is a little communication lack.
That dev-team has not reached the full design expected on time, and would be not communicated.
Or the dev team has not really understand the the designer in details.
... (Or maybe designers have some eccentric ideas) ...

With over 100 Votes it should be at least optional to bring it back. In my opinion on a phone favourites are mandatory. Also I'd prefer to have the option to tell how many favs there are. Now, still on 1.1.7 I have 5 colums of apps in the drawer. This better matches with the size of the screen.

I think the new buttonless homescreen is way better. Shortcut buttons just take space, I'd rather see more and bigger app covers. Looks cleaner and more beautiful. And follows the sailfish way -gestures, no buttons.

It would be fine to do if SFOS 1.x wasn't doing the job but that is not the case here. SFOS 1.x needed minor polishing to excel and they decided to redesign all the stuff that were good while introducing stuff that add clutter. TBH i'd like to see the design team -or whoever got the decision- explain the reasoning behind all this but i doubt this will happen.
At leas i hope they (or jakko) will read the posts on the design in TJC.

For your other comment, NO, topmost row is the least usable and your suggestion makes the current favbar obsolete too, it is only visible on home-screen... if rumours are right, we will be able to pick the swipe actions our own, and I for one will not have the app-launcher on global swipe up!
