It seems you removed it from SFOS 2.0. It adds one more gesture before being able to launch something.
UPDATE: We now know it can be triggered when the home-screen is empty. Well, my home-screen is empty in two cases, after a reboot (usually a system upgrade) or after lipstick crashed... chemist

I have the urge to close all not needed apps after I used them to save battery and system resources. I am not sure if this really makes sense, but can imagine I am not the only one acting like this. So I think there should an easy and quick way to open frequently needed apps. My suggestion: there should be the option to reserve some of the cover positions for frequently used apps (user definable). If not active, there could be a grayed out image of that app. Tapping it would start it. This mechanism would provide optional shortcuts plus give selected apps a fixed position on the home screen, e.g. prevent them to flip around in order of the last used app. It means quick start (e.g. replacing the former favourites) plus quick intuitive access to the running app (fixed position). This solution is totally compatible to the planned changes and not visible if not used. Addition: another property of an app cover slot (or position) could be the option to auto-start the assigned app. Means those apps will always be started after a restart, making them instantly and permanently available, pinned to a fixed position.
This would only take space in the homescreen. I have the flashlight app in my favorites so I can quickly launch it when needed, although I don't use it often. But currently it's hidden in a pleey menu and doesn't take up space, while with your suggestion it would.

Oh, and there should be more than just one page of covers. There's a patch that allows an endless home screen and that's what we need.

At 4:45 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z3Tp770ups you will see that the favourites are just hidden and not gone completely. Which brings the question, how do you trigger that with a full home-screen? Those favs are shortcuts for things I do not leave open always but it might happen that I have 9 covers open and those four are not within the scope! As pull-up and swipe-up are both gestures for the same thing, the launcher... so now I am getting confused. New users need every action set on two gestures? Why do pulls become equal to swipes?
Looking at that same video at 4:50–4:53, you can see that a short (or slow) pull-up gesture brings up only the first four (or favourites). There's no reason that couldn't work on a full home screen either. I guess a quicker/longer pull gesture opens full launcher.

Telephony and messaging are so essential features on the phone there needs to be a quick access to them available always. Android and iOS got that right making them available always as static shortcuts on the central screen shown after unlocking the device. SailfishOS improved on this merging these shortcuts with all other app shortcuts and making it a way to pull-up more apps. User can also decide on ones own which for apps are most important. Maybe camera, media player? Nice and intuitive.
I can understand that on tablet all-apps-are-equal. And you have enough memory and power on tablet to keep apps just open and access them via covers. But it is not the case for the phone.
As for me telephony and messaging are not so essential. Especially when you have apps like Viber wich makes telephony and messaging cheaper and nicer.

On SFOS 2.0 we will be able to pull up the application-screen at anytime, indicated by a small white pull-indicator, which is there in both home-screens (notifications and multitasking view) and fades away when an app is in foreground). I can think of following two possibilities:
Option in settings to display first row of apps all the time (so in both home-screens)
Longpress (>=1.00 second) on the lower part of the screen (where the white pull-indicator is) will make the first row pop up - similar to how it works on MeeGo Harmattan. This could be done in both home screens.
There should be space for that, especially since 2.0 is build to be much more dynamic and multitasking windows could move a bit up / get smaller whenever the app row pops up (seems to happen already now when you pull up application-view and small notification icons appear on left side). App names shouldn't be showed (like in current versions of SFOS) which would save some space.
When those apps appear, it could be still possible to pull them up all the way if needed. This might conflict with the already implemented way of pulling up the app view...but I'm sure solutions can be found ;-)
Most people now have to use two hand so make a phone call. I have fairly large hands, but I cannot tap on the top left corner with my right hand thumb, can you?
If they really have to be hidden then JOLLA should keep the option of 'tap to see' despite the fact that there are open apps. This looks like a whimsical designer or UX person thinking 'fuck the functionality' this looks better. I sometimes wonder if people who make decisions like that actually use the things they design.

But I agree with you that "tap to see" is a must.

Just make the 4 favorites visible if a user taps on a free space of the homescreen. Just like in classic BlackBerry (7.x) devices this would allow hiding them completely like the default shown in mwc or having them showing the 4 fav icons.
Why not show the favorites at all times? Then do away with the tiny covers once there are more than 4 apps running - make the covers scroll or provide multiple home screens.
The UI changes for OS2.0 made me not use my Jolla very much.
I mean, it can't connect to my company's mail system, so using it came with some missing functionality. But I used it anyway because it felt right. The new UI does not feel right anymore.

The tap when no apps running works perfectly to expose the top 4 apps, I've tried so often to do this when 1 or more apps are open - I'm gutted every time it doesn't work!

In my opinion on a phone the dialler is more important than so much else so it needs to be on top. Aditionally of course messages centre. Even on Android there are favs on each home screen.
I think that in addition to that the buttons are too big. I changed it to 5 favs on home via patchmanager and the size of the icons is much better for me. Hopefully Jolla thinks about those things.

A simple solution is that combining the ambience view with the event view, and keep the swiping down to close active app. Swiping down in homescreen to put the sailfish to sleep mode.
And I think two-page homescreen is just the right move unlike n9 three-page homescreen.

There are only four icons and how much space they can take? App like Camera need to be launched immediately, without favourites on home-screen, how to do it?
I like the hidden faves, but I'd want them open ALWAYS on tap or double tap or stroke, and same goes for the shortcuts menu: Should be always at hand, not just from lockscreen. And I'd want a better vertical carousel: Lock>home>apps>lock, so I can go back to lock for shortcuts.

An other possibility would be to expose the apps by pulling, just like the pulley menu or how we view the clock from the home screen. Since the tablet is used with both hands, you could pull up to expose the first row of apps (maybe even further) with one hand and select the app you want to open with the other. That way the screen realestate is used completely for open apps, without completely changing the current design.
You are right - on my tablets I always struggle with what I should use the favorite area in the launcher for (Android 5.1 with standard or Google Now launcher). But on a freaking phone, I struggle with so many more apps I want to have there (multitude of communication apps, camera).
So making a difference between phone and tablet may make sense

I think the new buttonless homescreen is way better. Shortcut buttons just take space, I'd rather see more and bigger app covers. Looks cleaner and more beautiful. And follows the sailfish way -gestures, no buttons.

It would be fine to do if SFOS 1.x wasn't doing the job but that is not the case here. SFOS 1.x needed minor polishing to excel and they decided to redesign all the stuff that were good while introducing stuff that add clutter. TBH i'd like to see the design team -or whoever got the decision- explain the reasoning behind all this but i doubt this will happen.
At leas i hope they (or jakko) will read the posts on the design in TJC.

For your other comment, NO, topmost row is the least usable and your suggestion makes the current favbar obsolete too, it is only visible on home-screen... if rumours are right, we will be able to pick the swipe actions our own, and I for one will not have the app-launcher on global swipe up!
