Dear Jolla users/supporters/fans, since we are still expecting new phone to appear, I think it is time to indicate to Jolla what we really expect from a Jolla 2 Smartphone, now, in Spring 2015. The poll will contain just a hardware wish list. Software, as you know, can be changed on the fly and for it we have releases. Hardware is a monolith piece of equipment and all ideas should be consolidated on one place. This is the reason I am making this poll now.

Each possible, important, major entry, will be a separate answer. It will contain general description of the feature and we vote on it. If you want to further specify it - extend it, explain why it is important to have (or not) please create a comment under the question. The comment can be voted on too.

Please check the existing features (answers) before creating a new one, to concentrate the poll and make it useful and relevant. Please also do not put negative votes - instead create another entry (answer) with the technology you want. Keep comments outside of answers, in Comments only.

duplicate as basically every tjc entry is a poll already https://together.jolla.com/question/19564/jolla-2nd-device-hw-suggestions/

Chemist, this is NOT a duplicate. It is a better, properly structured poll, such did not exist so far. The one you are referring to is messy and disorganised, outdated.

Jose, please remove your comment, it spams the poll. Most of the points you raise are included in the poll. Feel free to add some, if not there. But such big opinions are not useful to the poll, as they make it unreadable.

Atanas ( 2015-04-03 13:19:04 +0300 )edit

@Atanas I second @chemist, yet I like your approach. Perhaps this thread has a good reason to co-exist.

Super AMOLED display

Offers better battery life and status messages while on "standby" (like N9), priceless for users. Like SG6.

super amoled with Clearblack and assertive display technologies.

Smaller screen bezels (unused space b/w end of the active display and the phone frame)

Taken from Jolla 2nd device HW suggestions:

The first thing i'd like is to make the bezels all around the screen smaller. As small as possible in fact. This will probably make it a one-hand-device for more people. I have normal hands (i think i am in the 50th percentile) and it feels a bit big in the hand.

Makes the display cover most of the phone, so the phone itself is smaller or "active" screen bigger (use most of the front space, no big black stripes of unused space).

Atanas ( 2015-04-02 23:56:18 +0300 )edit

A 4.7 inch display would solve both of the above.

Making the J2 smaller would break TOH compatibility.

Up to 128 GB would be possible.

vattuvarg ( 2015-04-05 13:25:47 +0300 )edit

I'll add 128, agree.

Atanas ( 2015-04-06 20:48:08 +0300 )edit

I would like at least 3 GB RAM and proper use of microSD (total replacement for the internal memory, including capability to install apps on the card).

Low power consumption, bigger battery.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

that is no real hardware request as size of battery depends on the form factor anyway and battery consumption depends on the system

chemist ( 2015-04-03 11:19:59 +0300 )edit

It is hard to put a specific number of mA for battery or system consumption. This is to indicate to Jolla that they should make a difference from most Android phones that have really poor parameters (as of consumption mainly).

Atanas ( 2015-04-03 17:33:46 +0300 )edit

I see with every new software update for Jolla more features and UI side enhancements. When you make a process complex you need more resources and power. I am pretty sure as soon as SailfishOS 2.0 kicks in on Jolla1 a lot of people will complain about lower battery time then with all the previous builds. So keeping things simple and lean rather then magical is what Jolla should concentrate on.

TOH: Compatible with older model

I have exactly one cover, nothing else and nothing else is widely in use. Being compatible forces constrains on size (big), form(edges), external connectors (micro usb2) on jolla2. No thanks, it merely a marketing gag.

Keep the interface of the GPIO the same, if possible.

hoschi ( 2015-04-03 19:45:05 +0300 )edit

Keeping TOH compatible is a good idea.

A smaller phone could and should be released later by Jolla. It could use a modular approach instead of TOH.

vattuvarg ( 2015-04-05 13:32:41 +0300 )edit

Keeping TOH compatible is a terrible idea. What a perfect example of how to destroy innovation and take away any possibility of improvent.

dirkvl ( 2015-04-05 22:24:01 +0300 )edit

@dirkvl The problem is that a lot many people bought various TOHs to show their support now you take that away it all becomes meaningless. Also some TOHs are expensive, the current KBDTOH is selling for €130 thats almost as much as a phone in India or China. If people choose to buy that today then they want to use it for a decent amount of time

DeepPurple15x ( 2015-04-06 06:28:20 +0300 )edit

Removed another TOH request, I was not aware already exists: The Other Half: Solar Panel Charger Atanas (Apr 2 '15)

Already available. ...if TOH compatibility is kept. vattuvarg (31 hours ago)edit

Gorilla 3/Sapphire Glass

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

Gorilla glass is for gorillas. At one point of time yeah the touch screens where too delicate that a phone drop would easily cause damage. However now its the opposite, the screen is the toughest part of the phone and the build is damage prone. So a little more focus on overall durability could help but yeah sure good looking and beautiful display, screen res and particle density matters to an uninformed mobile buyer

Please place USB at the center bottom of the phone (better compatibility with most of car holders).

cocovina ( 2015-04-03 09:33:10 +0300 )edit

Moving the socket would unfortunately break TOH compatibility. Sorry.
