Dear Jolla users/supporters/fans, since we are still expecting new phone to appear, I think it is time to indicate to Jolla what we really expect from a Jolla 2 Smartphone, now, in Spring 2015. The poll will contain just a hardware wish list. Software, as you know, can be changed on the fly and for it we have releases. Hardware is a monolith piece of equipment and all ideas should be consolidated on one place. This is the reason I am making this poll now.

Each possible, important, major entry, will be a separate answer. It will contain general description of the feature and we vote on it. If you want to further specify it - extend it, explain why it is important to have (or not) please create a comment under the question. The comment can be voted on too.

Please check the existing features (answers) before creating a new one, to concentrate the poll and make it useful and relevant. Please also do not put negative votes - instead create another entry (answer) with the technology you want. Keep comments outside of answers, in Comments only.

duplicate as basically every tjc entry is a poll already https://together.jolla.com/question/19564/jolla-2nd-device-hw-suggestions/

Chemist, this is NOT a duplicate. It is a better, properly structured poll, such did not exist so far. The one you are referring to is messy and disorganised, outdated.

Jose, please remove your comment, it spams the poll. Most of the points you raise are included in the poll. Feel free to add some, if not there. But such big opinions are not useful to the poll, as they make it unreadable.

Atanas ( 2015-04-03 13:19:04 +0300 )edit

@Atanas I second @chemist, yet I like your approach. Perhaps this thread has a good reason to co-exist.

Two speakers, one on the top and one on the bottom.

There aren't two speakers on Jolla... you could ask for two, stereo speakers but now it's only one

a/ac/b/g/n WIFI support - 5 Ghz is a must to break out of the overflowing 2.4-Ghz-Band in Germany.

Supported by Intel x3-c3440.

vattuvarg ( 2015-04-05 13:12:13 +0300 )edit

@vattuvarg:

Well, the Snapdragon family starting from 4-/6-/801, the Samsung Exynos 5/7, the HiSilicon Kirin 940/950 and the Mediatek MT6595/MT6795 provide the WIFI standards mentioned above, too. So there is no need to focus on Intel SoCs only.

SailorofBerlin ( 2015-04-06 17:16:53 +0300 )edit

@SailorofBerlin - I didn't exclude those SoC (nor others). ...but Jolla has told in public that they will use an Intel x3 SoC in a coming product. If the J2 uses intel hardware then the above mentioned SoC is the only option.

so what do we want now? a camera phone or a phablet or an outdoor device or just everything?

chemist ( 2015-04-03 11:21:15 +0300 )edit

I have to agree with this request. The hardware camera buttons were a great way to take better photos (more stable than pressing on a screen).

Also, the 'lens cover slider' on certain handsets such as Nokia N82 etc used to operate as a short-cut to opening the camera application. A similar short-cut might be possible by double-pressing the camera button to start the camera app.

Do you know it's already possible with Jolla? Using the up/down volume button in the camera app does take a picture.

On the other hand, a "two course button" would be much better, as on the Ericson w810i: the first level of press is for focus, the second is for taking the shot.

MaxR ( 2015-04-05 11:59:48 +0300 )edit

Adding another button would break TOH compatibility.

Yes, it will be nice if HW keyboard will be as an option in configuration of the order

If TOH is unchanged then there's a hardware keyboard for J2 already.

Would be great to make a difference and have Intel. But only if this is not a tradeoff against ARM, on battery life and performance. Pluss-es - same platform as the tablet, binary compatible with PCs too. Huge backing from Intel, free commercial/marketing support. As of specs - must be high-end, 4-cores.

Atanas ( 2015-04-02 22:20:51 +0300 )edit

i prefer qualcomm snapdragon 610.

Plus from having Intel chip: possible Steam cooperation.

A intel chip might also help running an Open Source kernel. Would be so nice if the kernel could be updated without having to involve the ODM.

A probable SoC for J2 is Intel x3-c3440.

The idea would be to become a European alternative to iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone, which Jolla reckons will be "ideal for government officials, corporations, and consumers." In other words, it will try and crack the regulated end of enterprise that Samsung is pursuing with Knox.

--> so if that is true, then there is no way arround of having Dual SIM, because i am sad carrying arround two phones, private and work.

meldolion ( 2015-04-07 14:48:40 +0300 )edit

@meldolion - I don't think you need to worry. Even budget SoC support dualSIM nowadays. ...and if Namibia and India are indicators of future markets then J2 will have at least two SIM sockets.

USB charging at bottom

charging & talking is uncomfy and not good for cable and inside connector ( and i vote for headphones at bottom too, cable from headphones while walking and operating with device while wire is from top is bad idea) i remember all users reactions when nokia changed from bottom to top, and it remains only converted to habbit
