update: Oh yes they will - give licence

tldr; Oh no they're not.

OP: I read in german IT news from heise/ct (famous german IT magazine) that there is a rumor of Nokia going to produce again mobiles. Partially as desingers with licences but maybe also under the Nokia brand itsself. Nokia back to mobile business (in german, sorry)

Questions are for me now:

Will Jolla somehow interact with Nokia? Maybe HW designed by Nokia, usually Nokias had always a good HW reputation - together with Sailfish..why not (not telling that the Jolla Phone is bad, but maybe higher Volumes could be achieved??)

Will this affect Jolla in another way? Steal potential customers? There was no detail about the future system used, just a reference to the N1 Tablet which will be for sure outdated already.

I'm torn between liking and mistrusting that situation since I don't want that Jolla suffers from a Nokia-Phoenix.

Wouldn't it be a dream if Nokia uses Sailfish for the new phones? What do you think?

Edit:

here is the news in English:

UPDATE

Sorry to revive this old thread but they news are now official:

Nokia IS going back to the Phone market.

here is the link in German: http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/Nokia-plant-Rueckkehr-in-den-Smartphone-Markt-2717842.html?wt_mc=rss.ho.beitrag.rdf

Main News:

"Nokia plane, die Smartphones lediglich zu designen und den Markennamen Nokia als Lizenz anzubieten, erklärte Rajeev Suri. Partner, die später ein Nokia-Smartphone herstellen, werden noch gesucht."

Rajeev Suri said: Nokia plans to design the devices and to offer the brand-name for a licence. Partners who are going to produce the Nokia-Smartphones are still searched.

Found an english article from Tomi Ahonen: http://communities-dominate.blogs.com/brands/2015/06/now-official-nokia-will-return-as-brand-to-smartphones-from-2016-says-ceo.html

Well I don't wanna tell that Jolla is in desperate need of this partnership but I think it could be a good push in visibility. Most casual users have barely heard of Jolla. Of course this is only possible to happen if the ex-Nokia employees who are now in Jolla are not (still) with bad fellings towards Nokia.

PatsJolla ( 2015-04-20 22:30:16 +0200 )edit

Nokia has no mobile design capacity left, none for HW nil for SW.

It was all sold out to MS and what was not has been dissolved and dismantled. There is no infrastructure to do implement anything like that any longer.

You might as well ask any random international company not currently making mobiles to start manufacturing them... first you need to build design capacity, then manufacturing capacity... etc...

It would take years and huge pile of money... not worth it... no business there...

UNLESS! They buy a small company which has been taking care of design, distribution chain, hw / sw manufactoring in mobile sector...but this of course is just a speculation..

Here's the original article:

http://recode.net/2015/04/20/nokia-plots-2016-return-to-phone-market/

They did release the N1 tablet, so it's not like they have no design capacity left at all... I know they didn't make it the way they used to make phones, but I don't see why they couldn't release (Android?) phones in the same manner. Maybe they won't, but they could.

nokia has been killed by windows and microsoft and by stupidity, i wasnt happy for that, but everything what bad happens brings something new and good

now we can be unlike

i would like to mention, that we should not find ways how to run sailfish on anything else than jolla devices, just because it has no sense to buy Samsung or Nokia - send money to theese companies instead of Jolla! it is not smart at all as we requesting updates, new features from sailors, they simply need our money to survive stading agains massive used fruits and droids companies.

Exactly my thoughts @pan-tau . I got a call from my uncle saying he has a discount offer of One Plus One and asked me if I am interested ? I was like no I already have a Jolla and if I have more money I would rather put my money on Jolla tablet or a 2nd Jolla for parents . I just don't see the point in supporting other companies at the moment.

@pan_tau, I am not sure what you mean. Sure anyone has the right to use any OS she wants on her own devices...?

Nokia Aktiebolag was founded 1865. Nokia is not afraid to take giant leaps. They are now building muscles to surprise us once again. Remember Blue ocean strategy.

What is/was the blue ocean strategy?

Nothing will happen, Nokia was to cowardly tho push is own systems in history (N900 / Maemo, N9 / Meego). They will stay using existing OS without any risk or invest. I think there will be only Android devices with Z-launcher in the near future.

They fear the next setback. For us it is better to be independent, just so we can stay unlike

Nokia is not using any OS in their mobile devices, tyhere are no Nokia mobile devices in existance.

juiceme ( 2015-04-21 14:54:55 +0200 )edit

There is Tablet N1 using Android 5.0 and z-launcher in pipeline, so why should they now use a different system?

The purchase of Alcatel-Lucent might bring more than improved high-capacity network.

2 complains:

  1. Why android? why not Sailfish?
  2. R&D in China means that it won't have finish design or development? What should then stop me from buying directly a China-phone from lets say Huawei, OnePlus or Xiaomi or one of the other 1 billion phone producers? Where is the advantage of buying a "Nokia"? Higher price?

Hopefully the boot-loader will be opened so that at some point we could at least install Sailfish afterwards, of course drivers etc. still needed...

PatsJolla ( 2015-04-24 16:31:55 +0200 )edit

Nokia did buy Alcatel, so now they have a mobile division selling Android already.

meneer ( 2015-04-25 13:10:46 +0200 )edit

AFAIK the "Alcatel" mobiles are as much Alcatel as "Nokia" N1 is Nokia, meaning just a brand name slapped on a generic android device designed and built by chinese OEM company.

I would not be too exited really...

Nokia published a Statement today!

Nokia reaffirms it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets

April 26, 2015

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Nokia notes recent news reports claiming the company communicated an intention to manufacture consumer handsets out of a R&D facility in China. These reports are false, and include comments incorrectly attributed to a Nokia Networks executive.

Nokia reiterates it currently has no plans to manufacture or sell consumer handsets.

This is all very odd. To what division within Nokia does the N1 tablet belong?

vattuvarg ( 2015-04-26 22:35:06 +0200 )edit

The N1 is a foxconn device which runs a Android with the Z-Launcher as fare as I know.

Nokius ( 2015-04-26 23:24:34 +0200 )edit

Yes, but it is sold by Nokia...

vattuvarg ( 2015-04-27 06:44:01 +0200 )edit

At least an official statement...but it also still leaves the option out to establish a Nokia licensing..like with the N1.

PatsJolla ( 2015-04-27 13:43:47 +0200 )edit

Public relations clearly stated that the N1 is a Nokia product.

Welcome to a race to the bottom where everyone and their dog offers the same crappy experience with android. Nokia is a strong brand name but times have moved on.

The hardware is rumored to allow alternative firmware. ...and is built in previously nokia-owned factories. I would consider buying a Sailfish-able device from MHD.

Yeah, I too think this will not be happening. Just read that they are planning to sell of HERE maps too.

Update: Came across another report from a reputable indian media outlet that also speculates on this - Nokia to Re-Enter Smartphone Market in 2016: Report .

It makes a lot of sense for Nokia to start selling phones again. The brand name is still quite strong. However, Nokia does not have much phone design capability left: this was sold to Microsoft. So, the best way to do it is to outsource as much as possible to other companies, like they have done with the Z1 tablet in cooperation with Foxconn.

Nokia partnering with Foxconn is not a bad idea. Foxconn do make high end phones for many brands, so they know how to build them. Foxconn is apparently willing to invest in setting up a sales and support network, which will make them less dependent on Apple, and other current customers. Nokia's brand will allow them to sell quite well from the start. And for Nokia this is a way to get royalties, with the assurance of high quality devices under the brand, which prevents brand erosion.

Cashing on the brand name in this way means taking as little strategic risk as possible. So, Nokia's new phones will run Android. As much as everyone here, including myself, would like to see them use Sailfish, I think this is very unlikely.

It is a good strategy for the brand-licensing company but adds no value to the customers.

juiceme ( 2015-04-26 12:48:53 +0200 )edit

@juiceme that depends on who the customers are... Many people would love to get a Nokia on Android. They wouldn't even realise they actually buy a Foxconn phone.

I also think that for Sailfish, there would be better options for strategic cooperation. Sailfish needs strong industry partners to build the app ecosystem. That probably means working with local telecom providers or retail partners in order to have access to sales channels, and approaching local content providers to publish apps in the Jolla Store.

Please check Tomi Ahonen's blog and discussion about the Nokia brand making phones in 2016 comeback:

In discussion part there's also the Sailfish option being discussed!

The nokia n1 is an unlocked android device. The phones will be android too. If they are unlocked then sailfishOS would be an option.

vattuvarg ( 2015-04-26 08:43:29 +0200 )edit

Very interesting blog you posted, a bit too optimistic since everything is just an inital message but who knows. Unfortunately the only real info of sailfish was a clear no won't think it will happen from the blogger....very unfortunate if this really happens. I for myself with rather stay will Jolla and Sailfish then using an Android Nokia even if I still like the brand and their legendary quality. For me Android is the no go reason.

It's not with Nokia that Jolla should consider sharing Sailfish (and in this way I fully agree with @pan-tau et al.), but definitely as we need more 'surface' shown to the outside world, smaller companies like Fairphone should be contacted.

A very small company like Fairphone (niche product, fair-trade procurement) is not harmful to Jolla. Indeed, I trust they are less people than the Jolla team, and still building their second phone model -and not a competing tablet…

And IIRC, for this second model the Fairphone guys did discuss a lot about serious personal data protection etc. (their phones are rooted by default, and in their forums the privacy topic seems discussed a lot)

I expect at this moment the actual decision for the Fairphone model 2 have been taken, but if not, a design that would cross Sailfish privacy with fair trade would sport quite well I trust.
