I tried to upload and play a bunch of .mpg files from my old Sony (DSCW200) camera onto my Jolla phone and play them but for some reason it's not working.

Is this a missing codec problem / bug?

Any way to get around this?

I installed VLC from F-Droid and that can play the .mpg videos as well, but I'd rather opt for a native Sailfish app/solution...

You could try installing the codec pack found on Openrepos (also via Warehouse app); https://openrepos.net/content/xerxes2/ultimate-codec-support

Thanks for the suggestion. I installed Warehouse and the ultimate-codec-support but no improvement.

I think the video player isn't able to use those codecs even if they're installed.

Without you telling what mpeg codec you are looking for, not easy to tell anything.
