Intex & Jolla

New Delhi-based Intex Technologies is looking forward to venture into the wearables market in India with its iRist smartwatch. Also, the domestic brand will be the first to launch a Sailfish OS powered smartphone called Intex Aqua Fish in September at a price of around Rs 15,000. The brand will also introduce its new interface called iDmos for smartphones. The Aqua Fish smartphone will run the latest Sailfish 2.0 operating system and will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 CPU with 1GB RAM and 8GB internal memory which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card. EDIT #2 : according to sources at the event, it seems to have a replaceable battery (but the phone at the event is a prototype)

EDIT #3 : "New" SoC seems to account for bigger screen resolution (TBC, 720p)

More interesting is the new UI iDMos; but no words on the battery being replaceable... IF the battery is replaceable, we might be getting a better ones for our jphones as well! :D

Still trying to wrap my head around this. It's too early to judge, I guess. But it seems that they switched the manufacturer of the original phone and put in a better screen. So this could be seen as a Jolla 1.5.

The SoC is different tho ; Snapdragon 410 vs the Snapdragon 400 that is in the Jolla phone EDIT : also internal storage on jolla is 16 GB

I guess the SOC had to be different if they wanted a better screen. I think I read that the current SOC is limited to 540 x 960.

Yes, it goes in the right direction. This is a mid-spec phone for the Indian market. No Problem with it. I will wait for a phone with better specs and Sailfish OS.

EDIT: After reading the press release from jolla. Good to know that there is a "scalable reference platform" from jolla supporting Qualcom Snapdragon 200, 600 and 800 in all price ranges!

Yeah, availability will be a decisive factor along with device specs.. I just sold my Jolla waiting for the tablet to arrive and the next high-end phone with 2.0.. So let's wait and see..

Congratulations! And a few questions.

Intex Technologies seems to be an interesting company and a good choice for a licensing partner. Sort of a smaller Indian edition of Samsung or LG looking at the breadth of their portfolio. They offer a huge collection of smartphones.

Questions:

I wonder whether Indian phones generally work with 3G/4G in the USA? This is the most important HW deficit of the Jolla.
Will the Intex Sailfish phone have an FM receiver? At least the Aqua Xtreme V seems to have one (section "Entertainment").
Intex also offers a ridiculously cheap Firefox phone (1'999.- Indian Rupees, about 30.- Euro). How did their Firefox phone fare on the Indian market?
While the price seems cheap for Europe (about 215 Euro without import and tax costs), I wonder why an Intex Sailfish phone should be 30% more expensive than their current flagship phone (11'490.- vs. 15'000.-). Will Indians buy it at this price? I hope it is not the Sailfish OS license that is driving the price up :-) UPATE AND CORRECTION: The Indian EXPRESS talks about a "below 10'000.-" price tag for the Aqua Fish, so that would be in the expected range.]

I am interested to hear what Indian techies think of Intex as a manufacturer for a Sailfish phone.

(Hmm, the main line of Intex smartphones is called "Aqua". I like the name "Aqua Fish" for the new device. Aqua + Sailfish... looks like a match made in heaven :-)

Yes, the aqua smartphone model line was already in place at intex.Is this just coincidence? Maybe there are already some true fans in the marketing department ;)

Intex is the 2nd biggest mobile manufacturer in India apart from Micromax. They generally carry a low price on their phones. Now in India the fight is all about the sub 15 k territory. All the big boys as well the local units are pitching forward their phones in this territory which are selling like hotcakes. Jolla though is well known in Europe it is relatively unknown in India. I hope that this partnership will help them to sell around 1/2 million units (I think this can be achieved) and make it more of a known brand. This can only help the company from progressing further. This will have a fresh UI which can be pitched as an alternative to android and the big plus is that you can run android apps.

I can't be the only one who is getting frustrated with Jolla now. We seem to have been going backwards since the start of the laptop project and still no sign that there will be a new version of the phone for Europe. After all the support from Europe for the initial devices we seem to have been abandoned in favour of producing low cost devices for the big developing markets of China and Russia. My patience is running out and I don't even have a date for a tablet.

Iirc Jolla always mentioned their main targets to be Asian / Indian markets. What's wrong with that?

I have a feeling that renovating the Jolla Shop has something to do with the distribution network. So it's easier to sell the devices ment for e.g. Indian market in Europe. But then again, I just hope the phones reach Europe, I'm eager to see what kind of models they are coming up with, especially now that there were no announcements in the Shanghai MWC event.

EDIT: And yes, @tortoisedoc - you are right - or at least I remember the issue being so as well.

Jolla just announced last week that they will spin out the hardware team. That probably means that there is a team working on hardware...

Jolla itself will focus on selling OS licenses and creating the ecosystem. Delivering devices is now up to hardware manufacturers.

Wrt the tablet, Jolla announced that they remain committed to delivering the tablet to backers. Some additional delay might occur due to hardware problems (screen).

I don't think Jolla will abandon the european market. Jolla can't afford to alienate all the european developers by only releasing new devices in Asia. I rather think that this new 'Jolla Hardware Company" will be taking care of sale and support in Europe and other markets that Intex is not yet covering.

Jolla's press release announcing the cooperation with Intex.

However they left out Snapdragon 400 ... A typo?

Jolla has developed a range of optimised Sailfish OS hardware platforms from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 200/600/800 configurations

On a side note, Sailfish 2 is supposed to be released to Jolla phones within a few weeks for the early access users.

Current Jolla phone runs on snapdragon 400 :) I think they mean they expanded to the other platforms too, which is great!

Yet strange, because SFOS was already running on nexus 5 (snapdragon 800)

Could we suggest , that this Aqua Fish could to be the ex-next Jolla, abandoned with the new strategy dedicated only to software development ?

Could its hardware (MB + Screen) reused in the case of our Old Jolla ?

I highly doubt that, since the SFOS 2.0 is scalable to Snapdragon models 200, 600 and 800. So, my guess is that the SoC model given is wrong, or at least it's not what will be used in a released device. I should have mentioned that when editing the question, sorry.

Currently , the page http://www.intex.in/intex-sailfish-os/ returns 404 error.

The url was wrong at first. If you miss the www it redirects to tex-sailfish-os (without in). But at the time- and with the url you posted it worked. I guess you just didn't test with it. Just to clarify...
