Goal

The goal is to find the most attractive specs for the successor to JP-1301. Not a bunch of alternatives but one single set of specs. You, the users, will decide what you want.

Compare again?

2015-12-30 - Have a look at the review of Smartisan T2. The minimalism of that phone would be better complimented by SailfishOS, wouldn't it? But is it what we want for Jolla J2? (Yes, the question is a bit troll-ish but there's a good reason for that).

2015-11-07 The Rush before Slush - Slush 2015 starts in just a couple of days. Don't just sit there anxiously waiting for Jolla news. Distract your head and put it to good use here instead. Time waits for noone.

2015-11-07 - The Meizu M2 has similar hardware to the specs below. Compare with that phone and adjust your suggestions if necessary.

2015-09-18 - OtherHalf or not? J2 could use the OtherHalf system. Would that be a good idea or not? The difference in cost is probably tiny.

2015-09-16 - What about the camera? Any suggestions for good camera modules?
Moved SoC to separate category.

2015-09-08 - The hunt for an opensource SoC begins
Updated specs with some suggested parameters. Feel free to disagree.

2015-08-31 - I notice that some have started liking comments. More of that, please. Consider it a primitive way of voting. ...or at least a way of showing your preferences.

2015-08-28 - Let's go. Compare with the specs of the current Jolla Phone. Votes for the question itself will show to Jolla how important the users of this forum think the J2 is. (As this is a wiki I won't get any karma points for votes). Vote for the categories that you think are the most important. (I get no points for those either).

No, this one is intended to gather a set of specifications, although I don't still get how @vattuvarg wants us to provide and vote them.

@Giacomo Di Giacomo Me neither. There are a ton of threads about "JP2" that have specs, so I don't see how this one is different.

5.5 inches please. Full HD would be nice but HD ready is more than enough. No more than FHD that would only slow things down.

Same display size as in previos one. Resolutions HD (1366x768) or FHD (1920x1080). Display type IPS, Multitouch with glass. Please no plastic covers for display.

Agree with keeping the size and screen construction; its been pretty robust for me (whereas iPhone and Lumia owners seem to all have smashed screens...)

don't care as long as it is readable on direct sunlight

No TFT, but OLED. The LPM-screen of the N9 is something I miss daily. TFT is primitive in comparision.Full HD 5", small bezel. More than full HD is useless, 5" to keep physical dimensions in check.

A SD-card slot would be brilliant: you could read your camera's card with your phone. Adapter for microSD included with the phone, of course.

dual core cpu (some kind of ULV ones) prefferably arm. May be with big.LITTLE cores. GPU should have opensource drivers. Preffered 64bit cpu

Android or iOS :P (just kidding)

don't care much

dual or quad i don't care as long as the OS is snappy

good enough to be able to handle a fullHD external display at 60fps

Open-source friendly. Should have the option to update to current kernels, and/or reflash the device without much fuss. This would also lessen the need for libhybris. The current Jolla is locked to the 3.4 kernel because of Qualcomm. Needless to say we're missing out on features of newer kernels.

A separate modem, which runs on its own subsystem without access to the main system would be a welcome improvement for privacy and security.

I'd rather have a fast dual core than the current decacore-nonsense.

Eight cores. I want to run lots of apps at the same time.

@Giacomo Di Giacomo you have been misled. Having lots of apps open does not require many cpu cores. Even one core suffices, thanks to preemptive multitasking. If you really intent on having many apps pegging the cpu at the same time, the battery will be flat in an hour or two.

Two audio jacks that support video output. You could hook your phone up with a TV and a stereo or just listen to music with your friends using two headsets.

It's a very long shot, but my ideal JP2 would have a hardware DAC (like Cowon iAudio or early iPod) as software DACs just sound awful and I'm still carrying a separate MP3 player!

As I posted in another thread, why not just crowdsourcing to hire a certain group of SW engineers to make adaption of SF OS to some nice exist HW, like Sony Z123(C). Hence we have advantage of:

1) Much much much much cheaper cost.

2) Time saving.

3) 100 ppl will have 100 opnions on specs, but you really want something better than Sony's hardware? It has decent battery, camera, screen and sd slot so what else?

4) Realistic.

To be honest, crowdsourcing Jolla for making another phone from discussing specs (?!) is unrealistic. Let skip this process. We want Sailfish on a decent HW? Here the HW is, we crowdsourcing the SW.

My personal opnion.

Jolla will split into two companies, apparently. One will be for hardware and the other for Sailfish OS. You are talking about software when the rest of us are talking about hardware (more or less).

A hundred people will also disagree on whether or not Sony phones would be the best choice. There will probably be Sailfish OS for Sony phones and for other phones too. ...if the companies wish for it.

I fail to see how crowdsourcing the hardware would stop that from happening.

vattuvarg ( 2015-08-28 23:00:37 +0300 )edit

I'm just giving a more realistic suggestion. Do you have any idea how a phone is being made? How to design the board how to test how to deal with component suppliers? Do you have any tiny idea of the real cost? The fact is you have very little knowledge of how to build a phone and deal with logistics and services. You can assemble a car buying engines bears windows, but I phone doesn't build that way.

I hate to be the show stopper, but it is unrealistic.

Yeah, we can spend 2 months discussing hardware specs here but does that mean anything? Another fan hype? Than what? Another 14 month designing? Do you know how to handle radio chips? How to put antennas? How to optimise? Where to put RF? Chinese component supplier gives a high price for component because volume is not enough? Screen layer doesn't work well?

You are being naive!

I don't mind you doing this, but please do not turn TJC into a cluster of unrealistic dreams.

Waxberry ( 2015-08-28 23:13:53 +0300 )edit

For years dreamers dreamt of a smartphone with a real multitasking linux inside. Now that I have a Jolla JP-1301 i feel that it is pretty safe to dream on.

To be quite honest there are very few that can grasp a modern smartphone to the tiniest details.

My daughter simply doesn't understand why her phone is slower than mine. It has better hardware and only runs one app att a time and it still can't catch up to my Jolla, not even when I'm multitasking apps. But she knows things well enough to trust that the Jolla delivers. More than one time I've had my entire family connecting to the internet through my phone when their machines have failed to do so.

Yes, to reach all my dreams with the next Jolla phone would be completely unrealistic. There's still a long way to go before I have the phone/desktop hybrid of my dreams.

But I am unlike. I navigate by the stars and the moon to reach the dawn.
