Please tell me if it is possible to use Whatsapp in a ported Sailfish, and if so, how does it work. I left Jolla because I didn't have 4G or Whatsapp... Would like to get back.

If 'ported' means a community port of SFOS to a non-official device (everything besides Jolla 1 + C, Turing and Aqua Fish), then the answer is: No.
All community ports have the absence of proprietary functions (alien dalvik, word prediction...) in common. That means, there is no usable WA-version, until WhatsApp Inc. develop an native client for SFOS (what seems atm very unlikely).
Furthermore, there are some inoffical Whatsapp-Clients (e.g. Mitakuuluu), but WhatsApp Inc. is very restrictive against such software. My experience is, that they often have major issues and errors, partially don't transmit messeges and often loosing their basic functions with every update of the main program.
The native Whatsapp alternatives used the old Nokia S40 Protocol. But at the end of 2016 Whatsapp has cancelled the support for this clients therefore even without getting banned you will most likely not have a chance to connect to the server. Partly this is because of new functionalities like end-to-end encryption and partly because these hardware/phones usually have too less power to support all new functionalities

At the moment you can install hacked Alien Dalvik on Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 SailfishOS Ports. This is de-facto illegal, butit would work.
I personally switched from Whatsapp to Telegram. Its more open, no so restrictive and it runs native on SailfishOS.
IMHO its not a good couple to use SailfishOS for its openess and secured privacy on one hand and use whatsapp/google at the same time.
My opinion is: Who can't live without google and whatsapp should better use Android Smartphone. But again: This is only my opinion.

Well at the moment 4G is supported (at least LTE european and indian bands). And whatsapp also (just install android support) .
Edit: J1 and JC do support LTE and Whatasapp (via Alien Dalvik)
He said in a ported Sailfish, so no Android support and no Whatsapp.

Since when does not Jolla have 4G support? Both Jolla 1 and Jolla C support 4G.
