How are the lockscreen media controls' visibility determined with android apps?

Just wondering how does Sailfish determine when to show the media controls with android apps? Is there a list with the most popular media apps, like with the android notification alarms, where I could possibly add an app that should have media controls but doesn't? I'd like to have media controls visible for a mediamonkey remote app.
