Hi sailors,

with SFOS 3 we got a new feature called "top menu".

I have a hard time to translate this name into German. For now I settled with "Oberes Menü", which sounds a bit clunky in my taste. There are suggestions to call it "Top Menü", but it just does not feel right to me.

So here is a wiki post in order to suggest and vote for a good translation.

I don't really know how long this should be open for voting, because this is the first time I do this.

One week?
Two weeks?
One month?

It would be nice if we could get some "standard" done for things like this, so the community get's more involved as in just posting some suggestions on pootle.

If it works well, I would like to do it for other translations as well.

This is a good idea!
It's a real pity that Pootle (at least Jolla's version) does not support discussions. In my personal opinion TJC is not very well suited for discussions and issue solving.
But still this is worth a try.

Allthough I tend to be a little elitist about language (bad habit of a linguist ;) ) and I think that many votes alone do not yet make for a good translation (resp. localisation). There might be many 'unqualified' suggestions making the poll a bit noisy and hindering discussion about good candidates.

errm, what about simply "Menü"? From my logic, ambiance menu and quick settings menu have been unified in sfos3 so why not simply mirror that? Or do we have other or more important menues in need of differentiation i am not aware of atm?

Genau mein Gedanke. :) But top menu is hard to translate. "oberes Menü" is retranslated upper menu. So I would also call it "top Menü"

The suggestion "Schnelleinstellungen" is more in the direction "quick settings"

Call it, like its called in english. Its a kind of technical term.

Why? If you like it english, change your systems language. Sense of a translation is to translate things so that native speakers can understand it. There are normal users out there, which are not familiar with technical details.

So, my english is not very good. For me it makes sense to have some important words in english. Then its easier for me to follow the posts here on tjc or to write my own questions.

Whatever the word is, it is not a natural word everyone knows at first second, what is meant by this. In such cases I think its easy doable to take the english word.

Would you prefer, that stuff is called "blauer Zahn" or "Kabelloses aber lokale Region-Netzwerk"? Even the word "desktop" on the computer is much more used, then "Schreibtisch".

@inta: Not sure if "Top Menü" can be really considered such a deep technical term, which is not comprehensible by a average mobile user.

Additionally I do not agree that the "...sense of translation..." implies to avoid average anglicisms by all means. Of course it's part of the discussion how far to go with that.

On the contrary, to me it wouldn't make sense to use german words just for the sake of translation. We should rather think about localisation (i.e. good usability and common sense) than about translation in such a strict way. Most of the german suggestions here do not feel like a smooth localisation - as always: to me personally.

I agree to some extent, there are terms which I would not translate either, but they have to be well known and established. "Top Menu" does not match that. Is that even a common composition in english? I'm not sure.

I had some ideas for renaming the top menu but i thought too much about it, so now everything sounds wrong to me. But I want to share these suggestions anyway:

As most pulley menues [Schiebemenüs] are top menues themselves how about "Zugmenü" (to complete the confusion) or "Wischmenü".

As I got to the point that neither the position nore the gesture could propoer identify this menu I took a look at the behaviour and thought about "Rollmenü" as in [abrollen wie ein Rollo oder eine Schriftrolle]. Later I observed that the menu has three layers that enlarge one after other a bit like a telescope. So "Teleskopmenü" could also be a good metaphor.

But at the end I guess "Oberes Menü", altough sounding edgy, would be the most perfect fit.

Since this is a bad answer to vote for feel free to take one of these suggestions if you like and promote it in a seperate answer.

And another one. As the top menu is primarily used to display and alter different states of different aspects of your device AND it "comes down" from the status bar (at least if you invoke it from the home screen) i would suggest

"Statusmenü"

as another possibility

Hello, I think it depends on what it is used for. Top Menu can be a main menu, so it should be translated as 'Hauptmenü'. In the other cases (pulldown for example) I think we need English words to have a modern 'translation'. 'Top Menü' I think will be the best for this.

This menu contains the settings for the Sailfish configuration. So it could be called "Sailfish Menü".
