While it seems really early for something like this its good to start submitting ideas early so that the designers can think about it.

So what features do you want for the next Jolla Phone? Make sure to look through the previous answers and vote accordingly

The first thing i'd like is to make the bezels all around the screen smaller. As small as possible in fact. This will probably make it a one-hand-device for more people. I have normal hands (i think i am in the 50th percentile) and it feels a bit big in the hand.

No need for a bigger screen. 720p would be good but even at qHD it looks really nice.

If possible move the headphone jack on the bottom of the device.

Also i wouldn't mind if it was a bit lighter.

Possibility of screw attached metallic TOH for a more sturdy feel along with easily replaceable plastic ones for people who like to change them easily would be a great addition.

USB type C (the reversible one) is something jolla must consider.

even at qHD Much as I like my Jolla, I have to disagree. It is pretty clear that the interface was a higher resolution - for example the skinny font used on the launcher pages is often blurry on qHD.

Also I suspect that the choice of SoC forced on Jolla when ST-Ericsson decided to stop manufacturing or supplying the original choice of SoC is the reason behind the low-end display (the maximum resolution the current SoC supports is qHD). A higher specced SoC should mean we can get a better screen.

A bezel is needed to hold the phone comfortably and safely in one hand without accidentally touching the screen with some flesh of the hand. A thinner bezel wouldn't turn out good, I suppose. The thinner the bezel the more slippery the phone feels, because you have less place to hold it.

@pycage

They will of course need to prototype and test a lot in order to get the thin bezel right.

i would not mind smaller phone. n9 was nice form factor.

I believe that good things first should be associated with a more economical manufacturer as cheap hwaddr foxxconn makes big team as z3 and good espesificaciones 200 dollars for an example or as the flame firefox 170 dollars and the only thing that differs is the proecesador which is a Snapdragon 200, to make it more friendly to the pocket, toh is excellent but if we can not get jolla for the price we can not play with this option, with that Snapdragon 400 more than good 1 ram I see more than enough , a team it takes 20 seconds to light is a well optimized system, if you would ask no more, but if you like them to add value concecion otg, miracast that would be of great value to the area to san profecionar a PC computer in hand the clouds are there but not at all sides or faster than desired, and thus would be a breakthrough in the Cadre segment, for a super serious killer phone 400 0600 processor, 1GB of ram or 1.5, 4.3 screen size a bit more more compact as the xperia z1 compact, higher than 480x800 resolution, wifi, bluetooth, nfc, miracast, otg, toh, and other little thing that will be grateful for your part this review is only small I see a great future for this system over all others just have to be more friendly to the pocket

A minor modification would make my usage much easier: Put the power button below the volume buttons. I always use this button to turn off the screen. On N9 and other Nokia lumia phones, i can do it effortless without having to extend my thumb to the top of the device like with the Jolla.

that would break the TOH design... but i think as long as there arent any really usefull TOH's out there thats ok...

Why don't you use double-tap to wake instead?

torcida ( 2014-11-28 01:07:52 +0300 )edit

@michel Yes, it would break future TOH design if the Jolla2 is based on the exact same size, which most likely will not be.

@torcida I use double-tap to wake up the phone, but to turn OFF the phone, you have 2 options: you swipe down from the main screen, or you click the power button. In both cases, they're not convenient options because you need to extend your thumb in a non-practical manner. N9 and most Lumia phones have it right for the position of the power button: below the volume keys.

My two cents: an exclusive, cheap and great improvement would be a second (external, hot swappable) micro-sd port.

I think the new Jolla device can have two (or three) more pins to make a USB communication with TOH, this way we can make TOH that's a USB device, with more speed and possibilities!

? the hardware could just support usb-otg + i2c can basically interface everything already (USB i2c bridges are available that just behave as i2c slaves)

chemist ( 2014-09-27 16:31:26 +0300 )edit

I mean that will be nice if we can make a TOH that communicate with Jolla over USB, this way the other half will be a USB device too.

With I2C speed (400 kbps) we can't do nothing with video, ethernet, or anything that need more speed like USB (480 mbps).

Marsselo ( 2014-09-27 16:50:12 +0300 )edit

so drawing 1.5-2W from your phone for 30MB/s (most of the time you won't get more out of it)... I see why you want that! What USB device/interface do you want to add so that USB-otg is not already of better use? i2c is about the same speed as BT (and your 400kbps is the lower end of it, both go up to 3Mbps, we are talking new hardware not using Jolla1 and add some stuff to make Jolla2). If you want things like TV out or something, that is stuff that should be implemented at USBport level like on other devices.

What should be in a new device: -Same first half size ( so it can be used on current TOH) it would be bad to have to remake all current TOH -Maybe larger screen size ( like they do on certain iterations of other brands ) same phone size but larger screen -Better image quality, oled's or nokia's screen so it is more visible when in the sun and outdoors. At least 720p screen minimum. 1080p would be nice extra -Still guerrilla glass ( good thing so it doesn't break :P ) -Another NFC chip to do payments with and other stuff -A little bit thinner first half, if possible but shouldn't be too thin -Improved camera. maybe nokia's pureview lenses but they could be owned by microsoft hehe - Stereo speakers, the mono speaker isnt that great tbh and should be stereo at least. maybe one on top and one on bottom -hdmi output would be nice extra

Nano SIM support?

It seems to be well established now even outside of iPhones with many Android phones using it also. It would make switching between handsets easier.

Perhaps it could be done in such a way that microSD support could be maintained without having to use adaptors with a SIM slot that allows both?

What are the pros of choosing the nano format? ...interoperability with apple products aside?

vattuvarg ( 2015-02-04 12:37:41 +0300 )edit

It's smaller but the main point is interoperability with other phones which are increasingly adopting nano SIMs.

I think the next Jolla phone must be equipped with at least all sensors that are exists in Jolla phone 1 (proximity, accelerometer, gyro, e-compass, ambient light) and Hall sensor to use with covers (as in Jolla Tablet).

IMHO availability of the atmospheric pressure sensor make sense only with software that warns of the possibility of rain, and other weather changes
