While it seems really early for something like this its good to start submitting ideas early so that the designers can think about it.

So what features do you want for the next Jolla Phone? Make sure to look through the previous answers and vote accordingly

The first thing i'd like is to make the bezels all around the screen smaller. As small as possible in fact. This will probably make it a one-hand-device for more people. I have normal hands (i think i am in the 50th percentile) and it feels a bit big in the hand.

No need for a bigger screen. 720p would be good but even at qHD it looks really nice.

If possible move the headphone jack on the bottom of the device.

Also i wouldn't mind if it was a bit lighter.

Possibility of screw attached metallic TOH for a more sturdy feel along with easily replaceable plastic ones for people who like to change them easily would be a great addition.

USB type C (the reversible one) is something jolla must consider.

even at qHD Much as I like my Jolla, I have to disagree. It is pretty clear that the interface was a higher resolution - for example the skinny font used on the launcher pages is often blurry on qHD.

Also I suspect that the choice of SoC forced on Jolla when ST-Ericsson decided to stop manufacturing or supplying the original choice of SoC is the reason behind the low-end display (the maximum resolution the current SoC supports is qHD). A higher specced SoC should mean we can get a better screen.

A bezel is needed to hold the phone comfortably and safely in one hand without accidentally touching the screen with some flesh of the hand. A thinner bezel wouldn't turn out good, I suppose. The thinner the bezel the more slippery the phone feels, because you have less place to hold it.

@pycage

They will of course need to prototype and test a lot in order to get the thin bezel right.

i would not mind smaller phone. n9 was nice form factor.

The best main camera that money can buy, especially for low-light conditions.

A phone will never compete with a dedicated camera, but it is immensely practical for taking holiday pictures and snapshots. For me, the picture quality is one of THE distinguishing features in mobile phones. As I understand it, resolution (pixel inflation) is secondary. What counts is an excellent and large sensor.

I see Toshiba have a new CMOS sensor out that's suitable for smartphones. It's almost top of the range, but still only $20. Would love to have some thing like it in the next Jolla.

The best camera sensor and lens I have ever user on a mobile phone were the Sony's CyberShot. If Jolla could license that technology it would be absolutely awesome!

lhorga ( 2014-09-30 04:17:03 +0300 )edit

It would be a big bonus if any of the well known optics firms would license their name. Be it Zeiss (Sony), of Schneider (Samsung camera's), Leica (Panasonic) or Nikon, Canon or Pentax, or Fujinon...

A stronger haptic vibrator would be nice to have in the next phone.

The vibrator of Jolla seems stronger than N9's. However, it seems to have a downside: the feedback of the keyboard on the N9 is much nicer than on Jolla, possible due to the heavier vibrator which simply takes longer to spin up and wind down. On N9 it responds much faster.

the vibrator is pretty strong (was impressed), if it is not, the vibrator is probably failing (just had mine at care because of that)

chemist ( 2014-06-28 18:34:37 +0300 )edit

I can get no vibration at all... maybe there is also a problem on mine. But sending my device to care in Finland... not very found of the idea !

Do not worry about the price. Expensive is OK if the HW is really good!

Personally I prefer an expensive HW over one that was designed with a lot of compromises just to keep the price under a certain magic limit. The reference range for the price is the top iPhone model at the time. Of course it should not cost twice as much as the iPhone, but it is OK to be in the same price range, even a bit more expensive (provided the HW is of comparable quality).

BTW: I would much prefer Jolla focus on one HW device with SailFish and support that device extremely well. The way it is today with the Jolla phone. I think it is too early to go the "Android way", i.e. many different devices with SailFish. This will just dissipate the small team's energy. Maybe in 5 years, who knows. Then there could be cheap SailFish phones, too. But not for the next model, which I assume will arrive no later than mid-2016.

FM transmitter would be very nice.

A rare feature and the quality is not that great. But it is nice if you can tune in to your phone on any FM radio (think car radio!).

Still use my N900 as a Mediaplayer just because of the Transmitter (and the UPNP/DLNA-Capabilities). Not a must, but very nice.

@kimmoli has tohfm project going on (browse to maemo.org and read). Lets hope he will someday finish his consept into production and it will fit jolla 2 also.

HDMI out would be nice.

Quickly hook up the phone to the TV and watch pictures and movies. If the TV connected via HDMI could act as a fully functional external monitor - now THAT would be spectacular! Imagine: Play native and Android games on your TV. And of course, use the Linux command line on your HD TV :-) The next Jolla could be a true laptop replacement. Or Ouya replacement if you like.

Would MHL 3.0 through the microUSB socket and an external HDMI adapter be good enough?

it will be like in those cheap china OEM phones so definitely not !

@Marold was that about the dualsim or the 4G on both of them?

DualSIM would be an advantage when travelling too. But would sockets for two microSIMs fit inside?

Speakers should be located like in N900. One on the top and one on the bottom, currently both are placed on the bottom which doesn't make sense because people watch movies in landscape mode.

As far as I know there is only one speaker on the current jolla phone.

They can add one to the next phone. Or use 3 in total so you can have stereo in both orientations. :P

The Jolla has only one speaker. The other grill is the microphone.

I'd like to see speakers at the front like HTC One. Sure that's patented to hell and back though.

give j2 stereo ! Phone can be bigger J1 is very thin, I am almost scared it will break after having my heavy n900 + case mount in pocket for 5 years.

First of all, the 2nd device must not be incompatible with current TOH, if introducing new TOHs the whole thing was a waste of time.

2nd Jolla should have 2 versions, the well known 2 sided as we know it, but with extended hardware (NFC,acnbg-WLan,BT4,sotaCPU/GPU,2xRAM,etc), the other one should be just one layer more with a keyboard as future reference platform developer device, I don't care if it is 100eur more(take my money!)! Additional features could be waterproof, shatter-free, trans-reflective OLED display technology, good old CIR (preferably teachable) receiver and add a Wacom/Galaxy-Note-like stylus (and you probably rule out any competition with that already but if you have a thin, light, w/o kbd version too it wont hurt - like said before).

Problem is the form factor though as current jolla is just too long for normal bezels even if u give it a 5" screen. The lower bezel is just ridiculous... u could add 2 rows of hardware buttons with that bezel

NFC

Next Jolla should not "waste" NFC for identifying TOH's but instead use QR-code/barcode or other means to identify The Other Half.

Next Jolla should enable NFC for sharing (pictures, links etc.), Bluetooth pairing and reading/writing NFC tags like it was in N9 instead.

Probably the reason why NFC can only be used for other halves, is because of the tag being on top of it. Imagine a situation where you try reading an NFC tag but instead it reads the TOH tag.

Toxip ( 2014-08-20 12:20:38 +0300 )edit

Maybe the NFC tag in TOH could be placed somewhere else than above antenna. TOH id tag could be read before pressing TOH on the phone. This would of course need a bit changes in OS. Settings would need to have a new tab for TOH. This way NFC could be used for identifying TOH and also for other useful purposes. New Jolla 2nd device would naturally need to have a decent sized antenna for NFC, in order to increase reading distance beyond TOH.

Jolla095 ( 2014-09-19 10:18:48 +0300 )edit

You can do that with a TOH that have a NFC chip to read cards and communicate.

  • What ever you do, don't make it any bigger. The current size is about the maximum I can use all of the outside of the screen swipes with one hand.
  • Don't go with the "more cores, more Hertzs and more memory" route but think is it really needed and what it does to battery life. I would take longer battery life over raw calculation power any day on my phone.
  • Bigger loud speaker! I have all the sounds set to maximum and I still have hard time to hear the phone ringing from the next room and I sometimes miss calls when the phone is in my pocket (so maybe also more powerful vibration?).
