While it seems really early for something like this its good to start submitting ideas early so that the designers can think about it.

So what features do you want for the next Jolla Phone? Make sure to look through the previous answers and vote accordingly

The first thing i'd like is to make the bezels all around the screen smaller. As small as possible in fact. This will probably make it a one-hand-device for more people. I have normal hands (i think i am in the 50th percentile) and it feels a bit big in the hand.

No need for a bigger screen. 720p would be good but even at qHD it looks really nice.

If possible move the headphone jack on the bottom of the device.

Also i wouldn't mind if it was a bit lighter.

Possibility of screw attached metallic TOH for a more sturdy feel along with easily replaceable plastic ones for people who like to change them easily would be a great addition.

USB type C (the reversible one) is something jolla must consider.

even at qHD Much as I like my Jolla, I have to disagree. It is pretty clear that the interface was a higher resolution - for example the skinny font used on the launcher pages is often blurry on qHD.

Also I suspect that the choice of SoC forced on Jolla when ST-Ericsson decided to stop manufacturing or supplying the original choice of SoC is the reason behind the low-end display (the maximum resolution the current SoC supports is qHD). A higher specced SoC should mean we can get a better screen.

A bezel is needed to hold the phone comfortably and safely in one hand without accidentally touching the screen with some flesh of the hand. A thinner bezel wouldn't turn out good, I suppose. The thinner the bezel the more slippery the phone feels, because you have less place to hold it.

@pycage

They will of course need to prototype and test a lot in order to get the thin bezel right.

I'd like to get : a better screen for outdoors, a notification led on the back side, a paint finish more scratch resistant on metallic parts, a usb type c reversible connector

I like the sharp edges of the current Jolla design! Somehow it's more distinguishable from most other phones. I don't know how you see this but in my opinion Jolla should continue it's own design language but form-factors can be different?!?! Recently, I grub out my old N810 and N900 compared it with the Jolla. It's a very nice evolution especially comparing to the N810 which was not a phone but a "internet tablet which very strangely didn't get the permission form Nokia-management back in the days to have 'phone-software' - just stupid :(". Anyhow, almost same size but Jolla has a bigger screen and is slightly slimmer. If we get a Keyboard-THO, then those two devices are pretty similar but 8 years apart still :) Jolla's THO-concept is amazing! We can make an "old-fashioned" phone with dialing plate for my grand-parents-generation. Think about it - you could then neatly place the Jolla in an old-style phone enclosure - other's can't because of the missing harware-interface :-)

I like the look of the Jolla phone, but not the feel. Without a Lastucase my Jolla digs into my hands and it hurts. Also the phone slips out of my hands without a case. I very much wished that my Jolla had rounded sides and rounded edges, since the feel is more important than the look. It is good that owners can open their phone and to me this is the main advantage of the TOH. The other functions of TOH are a little disappointing. So a back cover that I can open myself is enough for me. The size of Jolla is ideal; not too big and big enough for reading, games, etc. A real improvement would be: USB on bottom and headphone jack on top. A good camera and good speakers.

2nd Jolla should be..

  • compatible with current other halves

  • on a remote area, if the phone is held normally from the bottom it drops from 3G to 2G, so it has "you are holding it wrong" problem, so please, put the antennas on the top end of the device.

  • better build quality, right now edges of the screen collect dust

  • stereo speakers on top and bottom for landscape video watching

  • fix the notification led bleeding light into the screen.

  • use more durable coating on metal parts, OR USE PLASTIC instead. (metal is shining trough the coating on my top corners already)

  • Better audio quality on 3.5mm jack

  • FM-radio

  • USB-OTG (usb host mode)

As long as it has good physical qwerty keyboard available from the launch. I really don't care about the resolution, memory, display technology, 4G, superb wlan chip, usb host mode, stereo speakers. If I can type with my phone using tactile feedback keyboard I'm happy. Jolla is allready faster than fastest QWERTY phone...

So best case scenario: Jolla would bring their own qwerty TOH and just made sure that couple future handsets are compatible with current TOH's.

IMHO Jolla should focus to chip and lens quality + image processing rather than pixels.

I would like to venture my wish list for a 2nd device too:

Better speakers, because sounds are too low. This is a must for us. DLNA/.... software that makes streaming to TV possible, mediaplayer software. Better camera and video camera. Possibility to pay for apps, also in-app purchases. Important for better quality! Improved calendar functionality. Synchronisation with Jolla tablet. On tablet: writing/office program. Connectivity with printer. Jolla/Telegram with full function: sending photo's and video's, emoticons, notifications. Possibility to switch off location for each app separately (privacy).

We very much hope our wishes come true, because until now we struggle and stumble.

Which one if those wishes is the most important one?

My wishlist:

  • Please (PLEASE!) make it dual SIM. You can do that by modifying microSD slot to accept either microSD card or SIM card. With that move I think market for Jolla would widened. This one is my biggest wish.
  • Screen size: 4.7"-5" (5.2" is absolute maximum but only with really tin bezels).
  • At least 720p screen (1080p even better). Make it possible to display notifications (similar to Glance).
  • Gorilla Glass 3
  • I'm fine with plastic build, as long it's high quality one.
  • Processor - Snapdragon 615 at least (although 8xx would be great). Or MT6752 (or 6795). Or even Intel processor if they are ready to support the phone through various means.
  • RAM - 2GB please
  • Camera - 8MP is fine (13MP/16MP would be great) but better sensor and OIS if possible.
  • Front Camera - 2MP is fine
  • WiFi - please add AC version too
  • Bluetooth - 4.0/4.1
  • USB - type C please
  • Battery - 2500mAh at least. The more the better of course. If it's easier, make it non-removable.

The hardware keyboard like N950... Today, in France, there is no more phone with keyboard, however, I know many people who search a phone with keyboard... They are not interesting by SailfishOS, but if a phone with this feature will exist, it can be the bigger argument to switch from android to Jolla !!!

I repeat, today, there is no more phone with a keyboard, but, the need exists !!!

3.5 - 3.9" OLED screen (no pentile matrix!) with maximum resolution of 1280x720. Approximately same size than Nokia N9. More roughness to back side that it's not so slippery on hands.

Big user replaceable battery. Thickness is not a bad thing.

No TOH support because of smaller size.

The placement of the USB port was a brainmelt. It should be moved to bottom of device, however this might break backward TOH compatibility unless making a dual design solution.
