While it seems really early for something like this its good to start submitting ideas early so that the designers can think about it.

So what features do you want for the next Jolla Phone? Make sure to look through the previous answers and vote accordingly

The first thing i'd like is to make the bezels all around the screen smaller. As small as possible in fact. This will probably make it a one-hand-device for more people. I have normal hands (i think i am in the 50th percentile) and it feels a bit big in the hand.

No need for a bigger screen. 720p would be good but even at qHD it looks really nice.

If possible move the headphone jack on the bottom of the device.

Also i wouldn't mind if it was a bit lighter.

Possibility of screw attached metallic TOH for a more sturdy feel along with easily replaceable plastic ones for people who like to change them easily would be a great addition.

USB type C (the reversible one) is something jolla must consider.

even at qHD Much as I like my Jolla, I have to disagree. It is pretty clear that the interface was a higher resolution - for example the skinny font used on the launcher pages is often blurry on qHD.

Also I suspect that the choice of SoC forced on Jolla when ST-Ericsson decided to stop manufacturing or supplying the original choice of SoC is the reason behind the low-end display (the maximum resolution the current SoC supports is qHD). A higher specced SoC should mean we can get a better screen.

A bezel is needed to hold the phone comfortably and safely in one hand without accidentally touching the screen with some flesh of the hand. A thinner bezel wouldn't turn out good, I suppose. The thinner the bezel the more slippery the phone feels, because you have less place to hold it.

@pycage

They will of course need to prototype and test a lot in order to get the thin bezel right.

Displaying something on the edge to enhance gestures (by make it an actual screen) could be a good Idea to make the gesture based sailfish style better, took an hour to create a concept to see how it could look like

image description

(my textures are ugly I know, I hate doing textures usually ^^" but I the end it give an Idea of what I'm talking about)

Here create a notification view with the edge but I think this is not the best Idea...

  • A task bar with a gesture like pushing the app into the screen could make the multitasking faster and easier...
  • Another Idea can could be to have a
preview of the app on the edge and
    use it like an alt-tab.
  • A last Idea I had too is to use those edge to bind the gesture up/down with the cover of two other apps that are running in background (I imagine changing the music by pulling down the right edge while reading a pdf). That can be a huge improvement for the multitasking !

Well all this text to say: those edge can make a big improvement in the gesture style and the multitasking note: I create a "sharp" style to make it looks different than the first jolla and keep the other half with same proportion with the Idea to keep it compatible with the previous other half

Pocket friendly corners

I would like the corners to be somewhat more rounded and friendly to pockets. This is what a pair of jeans looks like after some time with a Jolla in the pocket:

We absolutely need a much more reliable connector for micro USB. At the moment connector doesn't fit totally in position, and moving the phone often provoke start/stop charging.

My wishlist:

  • Please (PLEASE!) make it dual SIM. You can do that by modifying microSD slot to accept either microSD card or SIM card. With that move I think market for Jolla would widened. This one is my biggest wish.
  • Screen size: 4.7"-5" (5.2" is absolute maximum but only with really tin bezels).
  • At least 720p screen (1080p even better). Make it possible to display notifications (similar to Glance).
  • Gorilla Glass 3
  • I'm fine with plastic build, as long it's high quality one.
  • Processor - Snapdragon 615 at least (although 8xx would be great). Or MT6752 (or 6795). Or even Intel processor if they are ready to support the phone through various means.
  • RAM - 2GB please
  • Camera - 8MP is fine (13MP/16MP would be great) but better sensor and OIS if possible.
  • Front Camera - 2MP is fine
  • WiFi - please add AC version too
  • Bluetooth - 4.0/4.1
  • USB - type C please
  • Battery - 2500mAh at least. The more the better of course. If it's easier, make it non-removable.

I would like to venture my wish list for a 2nd device too:

Better speakers, because sounds are too low. This is a must for us. DLNA/.... software that makes streaming to TV possible, mediaplayer software. Better camera and video camera. Possibility to pay for apps, also in-app purchases. Important for better quality! Improved calendar functionality. Synchronisation with Jolla tablet. On tablet: writing/office program. Connectivity with printer. Jolla/Telegram with full function: sending photo's and video's, emoticons, notifications. Possibility to switch off location for each app separately (privacy).

We very much hope our wishes come true, because until now we struggle and stumble.

Which one if those wishes is the most important one?

Size of Jolla is perfect for most adults. But the sound is not. Speakers are not good enough and the sound volume of my Jolla is too low for using the phone as satnav. With the most high volume we cannot hear Here in the car. Also we cannot hear our phones when we are in outside, in the city. It's a shame.

Tip: the ringing can be made louder by changing the nice default Jolla-ringtone by simply choosing some loud piece of music from your music collection.

JoHe ( 2015-04-24 18:37:49 +0300 )edit

Thank you Jotte. Unfortunately we (husband and me) have zero music and only the Jolla ringtones on our phones. I try for seven months to download music, but no result. Nothing appears in Media, Daedalus or Quasar. We watched Youtube videos about this subject, but nothing works on our phones. Changing the default ringtones was my first idea too, but its impossible. No files. I have one track on my clipboard now (url) and it can play from my clipboard, but nothing else. Makes me so frustrated.

K and J ( 2015-04-26 15:18:12 +0300 )edit

You could try to refresh media database with Sailfish Utilities found in Jolla Store. Another option, if you have lot's of media in your device or SD card, is to

  1. remove your media files (backup them first!)
  2. Restart Jolla and insert now only the single music file you want to start using as ring tone. It should now appear immediately on your media player and elsewhere.
  3. The bring back your other media files, but maybe in small portions – and hope your media file indexing will not be choked.

You can download ring tones for example from Jamendo or Magnatune.

Thanks for the suggestion. However, the problem is not how to find music, it's a tech problem with my phone (and me). Nothing happens with long pressing on a subject, nothing comes in Media. Also nothing happens when I search on my phone and try to download. But yesterday I found a way to download mp3 files: first I download it on my computer and than I transfer it with bluetooth to my Jolla. This is the only way so far (7 months) to get music in Media. I am happy to have a louder ringtone now. The transfer between Media and Settings works fine.

Thanks, JoHe. Finding music is not the problem, it is a tech problem. Nothing happens, when long pressing on a subject. Nothing comes in Media. But since yesterday i finally found a way to download Mp3 files: first download on computer and than with bluetooth transfering to my Jolla.

Nano SIM support?

It seems to be well established now even outside of iPhones with many Android phones using it also. It would make switching between handsets easier.

Perhaps it could be done in such a way that microSD support could be maintained without having to use adaptors with a SIM slot that allows both?

What are the pros of choosing the nano format? ...interoperability with apple products aside?

vattuvarg ( 2015-02-04 12:37:41 +0300 )edit

It's smaller but the main point is interoperability with other phones which are increasingly adopting nano SIMs.
