While it seems really early for something like this its good to start submitting ideas early so that the designers can think about it.

So what features do you want for the next Jolla Phone? Make sure to look through the previous answers and vote accordingly

The first thing i'd like is to make the bezels all around the screen smaller. As small as possible in fact. This will probably make it a one-hand-device for more people. I have normal hands (i think i am in the 50th percentile) and it feels a bit big in the hand.

No need for a bigger screen. 720p would be good but even at qHD it looks really nice.

If possible move the headphone jack on the bottom of the device.

Also i wouldn't mind if it was a bit lighter.

Possibility of screw attached metallic TOH for a more sturdy feel along with easily replaceable plastic ones for people who like to change them easily would be a great addition.

USB type C (the reversible one) is something jolla must consider.

even at qHD Much as I like my Jolla, I have to disagree. It is pretty clear that the interface was a higher resolution - for example the skinny font used on the launcher pages is often blurry on qHD.

Also I suspect that the choice of SoC forced on Jolla when ST-Ericsson decided to stop manufacturing or supplying the original choice of SoC is the reason behind the low-end display (the maximum resolution the current SoC supports is qHD). A higher specced SoC should mean we can get a better screen.

A bezel is needed to hold the phone comfortably and safely in one hand without accidentally touching the screen with some flesh of the hand. A thinner bezel wouldn't turn out good, I suppose. The thinner the bezel the more slippery the phone feels, because you have less place to hold it.

@pycage

They will of course need to prototype and test a lot in order to get the thin bezel right.

i would not mind smaller phone. n9 was nice form factor.

I would still love to see a N950-like design (including the keyboard), maybe a little bit smaller than the current jolla phone and smaller bezel. The TOH-concept is nice, but what about a faster interface (like usb for example) which enables the use of standard components (like dvb-t receivers, additional radio for second sim card, even a usb graphic card.. :) ) in self-made other halfes.

What I miss most compared to my previous phone (Nokia N8):

  • Camera Button (which will start the camera app and let me pre-focus)
  • USB Host mode (might be more usable with the new c-type USB 3 interface)
  • FM-Transceiver
  • Video out

Oh well, and of course the usual stuff like more memory and cpu/gpu power would be nice :) I also wouldn't mind a dual sim option

except dual sim because its clearly a OEM china phones feater

for me first jolla is nice but missed some important components: an transreflecting LCD for sun shine, a good audio speaker more powerfull, a real NFC, a FM transmitter and a minimum of 32Gb internal memory. With these should be perfect phone!

Only have two wishes for next hardware revision:

* hdmi output
* hardware keyboard

A incremental cpu, memory, storage upgrade is expected just to stay somewhat relevant in the hardware race. Maybe get into bed with Intel for their upgraded mobile SoC.

Software side:

* Equalizer in the Media app
* Improved browser: HTTP/Socks proxy support

the screen of actual jolla is unusable under sun shine. this is important first, in my opinion

A minor modification would make my usage much easier: Put the power button below the volume buttons. I always use this button to turn off the screen. On N9 and other Nokia lumia phones, i can do it effortless without having to extend my thumb to the top of the device like with the Jolla.

that would break the TOH design... but i think as long as there arent any really usefull TOH's out there thats ok...

Why don't you use double-tap to wake instead?

torcida ( 2014-11-28 01:07:52 +0300 )edit

@michel Yes, it would break future TOH design if the Jolla2 is based on the exact same size, which most likely will not be.

@torcida I use double-tap to wake up the phone, but to turn OFF the phone, you have 2 options: you swipe down from the main screen, or you click the power button. In both cases, they're not convenient options because you need to extend your thumb in a non-practical manner. N9 and most Lumia phones have it right for the position of the power button: below the volume keys.

I am satisfied with the current Jolla's dimensions and design. I would like improve this:

DISPLAY: 720p and better screen visibility in bright environments ... HD is simply the minimum standard for modern smartphone. Working with current display is a very difficult on sunlight.

CAMERA: I would like see as least the same camera as on N8 ... I think it's NOT just about MPx. Jolla needs simply better lens, chip and flash also. For big problem I found the current location of the lens. It must be better protected against mechanical damage (any frame or slightly hidden).

USB: I prefer the location of the connector on the bottom of the phone ... To facilitate the connection for more mobile in-car holders/in-car chargers.

EDIT 08/Sep/14: BATT: Better battery is definitely needed. IMHO it is not about the capacity only. The current one overheats very often. When charged in the car holder - placed behind the front window then using a navi is simply mission impossible. :(

I believe that good things first should be associated with a more economical manufacturer as cheap hwaddr foxxconn makes big team as z3 and good espesificaciones 200 dollars for an example or as the flame firefox 170 dollars and the only thing that differs is the proecesador which is a Snapdragon 200, to make it more friendly to the pocket, toh is excellent but if we can not get jolla for the price we can not play with this option, with that Snapdragon 400 more than good 1 ram I see more than enough , a team it takes 20 seconds to light is a well optimized system, if you would ask no more, but if you like them to add value concecion otg, miracast that would be of great value to the area to san profecionar a PC computer in hand the clouds are there but not at all sides or faster than desired, and thus would be a breakthrough in the Cadre segment, for a super serious killer phone 400 0600 processor, 1GB of ram or 1.5, 4.3 screen size a bit more more compact as the xperia z1 compact, higher than 480x800 resolution, wifi, bluetooth, nfc, miracast, otg, toh, and other little thing that will be grateful for your part this review is only small I see a great future for this system over all others just have to be more friendly to the pocket

NFC

Next Jolla should not "waste" NFC for identifying TOH's but instead use QR-code/barcode or other means to identify The Other Half.

Next Jolla should enable NFC for sharing (pictures, links etc.), Bluetooth pairing and reading/writing NFC tags like it was in N9 instead.

Probably the reason why NFC can only be used for other halves, is because of the tag being on top of it. Imagine a situation where you try reading an NFC tag but instead it reads the TOH tag.

Maybe the NFC tag in TOH could be placed somewhere else than above antenna. TOH id tag could be read before pressing TOH on the phone. This would of course need a bit changes in OS. Settings would need to have a new tab for TOH. This way NFC could be used for identifying TOH and also for other useful purposes. New Jolla 2nd device would naturally need to have a decent sized antenna for NFC, in order to increase reading distance beyond TOH.

You can do that with a TOH that have a NFC chip to read cards and communicate.

I think the next Jolla should be very similar. It doesn´t need high-tech but better-tech. Should keep the TOH and thus the sorm factor: no smaller Jolla

Some asked for a solar charger TOH, here is my critic on those: Putting down Your phone with display down in the sun with a black solar cell that gets hot, and the charging battery is behind that. Its a bad idea. What phones could use solar tech is longening batery life, not replacing the charger. Like solar watches, should do that in the front, which actually the bezels. So no smaller bezels either. I havent seen this tech yet but think about it Jolla.

Nice proposal with the transparent in-screen embedded front-solar idea! I like that and would also think its the better implementation. But - here is the "but" - keep in mind that those transparent solar-cells exist but they might show an "ugly" grid on the screen, especially if there is a white background.

Marti Masa K ( 2014-09-08 15:06:00 +0300 )edit

To use more space for the solar cell a flexible one as TOH which goes around from the Other Half side and protects the screen could be used to harvest more light. Btw, the Jolla might even sustain it's battery in same level just with room-light. Outdoors you can really charge depending on the kind of flex-solar-cell!

The placement of the USB port was a brainmelt. It should be moved to bottom of device, however this might break backward TOH compatibility unless making a dual design solution.

First of all, the 2nd device must not be incompatible with current TOH, if introducing new TOHs the whole thing was a waste of time.

2nd Jolla should have 2 versions, the well known 2 sided as we know it, but with extended hardware (NFC,acnbg-WLan,BT4,sotaCPU/GPU,2xRAM,etc), the other one should be just one layer more with a keyboard as future reference platform developer device, I don't care if it is 100eur more(take my money!)! Additional features could be waterproof, shatter-free, trans-reflective OLED display technology, good old CIR (preferably teachable) receiver and add a Wacom/Galaxy-Note-like stylus (and you probably rule out any competition with that already but if you have a thin, light, w/o kbd version too it wont hurt - like said before).

Problem is the form factor though as current jolla is just too long for normal bezels even if u give it a 5" screen. The lower bezel is just ridiculous... u could add 2 rows of hardware buttons with that bezel
