The title tells it all. I don't even get any SMS notification.

The Jolla is not able to send or receive MMS yet. To send a contact (.vcf) as an attachment of a short message, the message changes into MMS format, i think. so that would explain why this doesn't work. why don't you send this via Bluetooth?

I am not a GSM expert but I don't think contacts are sent as MMS. In fact the N900 does not support MMS out of the box and still can send and receive contacts.

Obviously, I don't need the SMS transfer when I have both phones at hand but I want to be able to receive contacts from other people in general. Problem is, there is not even a failure notice on any end.

i don't know about the n900, but my n9 and my symbian phones send contact cards only via MMS.

here is something about mms Support, also the last commentator speaks about sending contacts: https://together.jolla.com/question/955/mms-multimedia-message/

about the notifications: i know the sms-notification from my operator back in the days when mms was a very new thing, which said something like "you got an mms, download it here". But i do not know if any operator still does it today

As I already commented elsewhere, this is a known issue. We are actively working on MMS support and once it's released Jolla should be able to receive contact cards via MMS. We will try to sneak in support for SMS-based vCards as well but it's optional so no promises there, MMS is clearly first in the queue.
