Since last week I use Sailfish X in the beta version on my Sony XA 2 for the first time. So far I have only experiences with Android Custom-Roms, like Lineage OS. Under Sailfish I also want to use a TorBrowser without using Android apps. Do you have any experiences or recommendations for Apps from the Jolla Store or openrepos? I've already read some pages, but found mostly outdated information. Thank you very much!

Bit off-topic, but a serious (and not offending) question: Can you or someone with Tor experience tell me some personal advantage you get by using it?

I mean it's defacto an organization found and still financed by US-Military, -Intelligence and -Government. The end-nodes can "see" everything except the IP. Everyone can create nodes. And as there are less than 3000, it doesn't need much of them to "fish" huge amount of traffic and even break anonymity. Plus, at least eight Tor employees earn more than 100.000$/year (max. 145.000$).

Usually that's enough argumentation to keep that away from me, but as I see honorable people using Tor, I just might not get it. Is the .onion content so good that it's worth it? Or something else I don't understand?

If, hypothetically speaking, some instance would want to deny you access to websites from other countries as you could be a) trying to see news other than your state news, b) trying to express opinions that are prosecuted or at least not very beneficial for you, especially criticising current politics or social problems c) work for some kind of NGO and having to rely on communications passing through etc.

There's always a chance for criminal energy, human failure or exploitation, but the involvement of the Tor network in last decade's political events (people able to communicate even though the state cut off the mobile connectivity) shows how overly important such an instance can and will be, both on personal and international scale.

Tor has its downsides, be it its USAmerican heritage, the low speed/bandwidth, the missing trustworthiness of entry, bridge and exit nodes or the criminal possibilities, but I consider its existence justified.

Cheers

Ahoj,

you can get the Tor package itself from openrepos which changes the Sailfish Browser to some kind of Tor Browser as soon as you changed the network_proxy values in the about:config page. Only the Browser is being torified, NOT any other app (an alternative browser from openrepos also uses the Tor settings, but I do not recall which one atm).

I used both Android apps (Orbot and Orfox) a while ago, but those caused instability issues, making it impossible to tell whether I was using the encrypted mode or not.

Cheers!

You need to open the Sailfish browser and enter

about:config

as URL. Click on the search field and enter

network.proxy

which will prevent you from having to browse every browser setting. You need to set the following values:

network.proxy.proxy_over_tls must be activated

network.proxy.socks to 127.0.0.1

network.proxy.socks_port to 9050

network.proxy.socks_remote_dns must be activated

network.proxy.type to 1

Of course these are the standard settings, and of course you might have to change ports and stuff if you alter other settings, but such things are well covered in the Tor wiki on the WWW.

Cheers!

...and after that you'll have to open terminal and type

tor

No Root privileges needed for that. I have to start Tor via terminal every time I restart the phone, maybe there's a workaround I was too lazy to search for - it would be sufficient to add the "tor" command into the autostart list.

to start tor systemctl --user start tor

to start tor at reboot systemctl --user enable tor
