My phone vibrates only when it's in a right position, for example, on its side. This is probably a hardware defect, but knowing Linux, it might just be one of those bizarre things it does. Anyone else have this?

As others have described, vibration motor seems to get stuck every time in to same position. You can notice it by removing a sticker on little hole underneath TOH switch. A little shake or moving eccentric piece through hole sets it free but it soon gets stuck again quite near the position shown in image below.
I took some measurements with multimeter and the motor was getting correct voltages when vibration is used, so the motor must be faulty. With light search found very similar onefrom ebay. Edit: Same motor also available at e.g. uxcell.com (search for "mini vibration motor"). Dimensions for motor body to fit are 4 x 4 x 8 mm.
Replacing the motor is made awfully easy. It is just pushed in to plastic frame witch comes off first when you unscrew all visible T5 screws. After screws there is few plastic clips you should be aware of when tearing the frame off. Motor is not glued in to it's place or anything. You can just lift it up and push another back in.
Alas the one I bought was slightly thicker than original so I cut a bit of it's rubber coat. Or since actual motors are exactly same size I just could have changed rubber coat from original.
When assembling the phone you might want to check that speaker works because thicker vibration motor might bear the frame and speaker connector with it. It actually did happen to me before I modified the rubber coat.
I hope this helps someone who has already wrecked their warranty like me.
Should also be self-evident that you may use information provided as reference and are responsible yourself of the work if anything goes wrong. Just use good light, patience and soft drink of choice and it should be fine :)
I just did the operation with the same motors you mentioned, went smooth and vibration (and speaker) works perfectly, thanks a lot for the tip!
One remark though: Once i fastend all screws again the motor stopped vibrating. I discovered that I had to loosen the two screws closest to the motor a little bit in order make in vibrate again, seems that something is blocking the rotation if the screws are to tight.

I managed to fit a motor from a Sony Ericsson W550, but I won't recommend anyone else to try - I had to carve out some plastic and also get rid of some of the aluminum frame. The motor isn't very responsive, but it works when I receive a call. I have ordered from ebay, and will change when it arrives. Thanks!

You can start csd from Terminal, and there's a test for vibrator there. Though, I'm not sure if you, as a user, are supposed to use it.
At least you will know if it works at all. It's a useful test, because the haptic feedback on Jolla really sucked from day one and sometimes I think it might be completely broken. The vibrator misses vkb key presses quite often, and even when it works it feels very lazy. Compared to this, N9 is really crisp and never misses.
@clau Thank you. My phone stopped vibrating. I read your comment and ran the CSD tool. I started the "Vibrator" test and nothing happened. Pressed FAIL, and ran the test again. Having @Bulder comment about the vibrator getting stuck, I gave my phone some good hard shakes....
The vibrator started working. I left the vibrator test running for a couple minutes to help free it up. But running the test again later and the vibrator was stuck again!

Hi!
I also have a problem with the vibrator : it doesn't vibrate at all anymore (neither for haptic feedbacks,nor ringtones). I tried the hardware test with csd, and it works well ONLY if I shake it briefl (if I interrupt the test and do it again, I have to shake it again). ==> It seems it sticks to its rest position Does anyone has experienced this ? it seems till and velimir hav this problem also, do you confirm ? I'll email care@jolla to have their feeling about this

I tried the test with csd-tool once more... After shaking the phone (while it was running the vibration test) on my hand it started to vibrate, but instead of leaving the test, I continued to let it run, after a while, 30sec or so, I head that the frequency of the vibration sound was geting higher, so I let it run it for 30sec more (it was getting higher all the time), then went to lock screen's pulley menu to test if the vibration effect works on it's pulley menu, guess what, SUCCESS! At least for now... Try it if it works for you guys too!
For me vibration also stopped working suddenly, shaking or tapping the phone would trigger it ON for a moment,then it is gone again. Tried @goldenm suggestion with running the csd vibration test for nearly a minute and exactly the same result - vibration pitch getting higher and now it works for several hours already. Of course I do not know if will not stop suddenly again. Will notify Jolla Care as this seems to be common HW issue.
EDIT 23.05.2014: After like 2 months of normal operation vibration died again. Tried the same method to restore it, but still no go. Will keep trying - it seems a lucky touch is needed so that the actuator stays in the right position.
EDIT 05.09.2014: After a month of normal operation, the actuator started to "misfire" again. Shaking and tapping the phone turned it for a short while, that vibration stops again. I had to send my Jolla for repair service. Took a week to complete.

It seems to be a hw issue. I received my phone back from Jolla repairs and it works just fine now.
This seems to be true. I had the same problem, sent it in for repair and when I got it back the phone had a new IMEI number. So i guess that they replaced the entire phone. It would be interesting to know if this problem is related to special batch of phones.

My vibration is working with the CSD tool. I've set the Jolla to always vibrate. But it is not vibrating with incoming text messages or calls. I noticed that when I enable "touch screen vibration" than it is vibrating when a call comes in. It appears that a setting in the software is linked with the touch screen vibration option and your "vibration" setting of the phone.

For me my phone stopped vibrating some days ago.
So tried to change settings, reboot the phone (one time when I switch on, there is one vibration), remove the battery and just now, I have done a factory reset , but nothing help.
Right now, my phone never vibrate so I'm really afraid about a hardware problem :(

Ok thanks for your answer. I just test CSD Tool and with the vibrator test, I have no vibration. So it seems to be a hardware problem in my case, a bit sad for a 3 months old device :(
Yes but it's strange that for me the vibrator seems to be out of service and for few other people the problem just appears sometimes.

I had the same problem from one day to the next, no vibration at all. Then I dropped the phone CAREFULLY from aprox 4-5cm height onto a table (covered with tablecloth) with the other half facing towards the table and vibration was back for some minutes. Then I repeated the drop and let the vibration run for some minutes (via csd), now it's fully working again :)

After turning the vibration off (in the Settings menu) for a few days (2-3) and then turning it back on, i now have vibration working just fine. Weird..

Update: Problem went away for a while, but today vibration stopped working altogether. The vibration just makes a tiny noise instead of, you know, vibrating.
