Despite adding a Facebook account in Settings and making sure Calendars was enabled, and after synching both from the account listing and in the Calendar app, no events from Facebook are showing up in the Calendar.

This is a known issue since (at least) 3.0.1.
From the 3.0.1. release notes
Some Facebook services (syncing FB events to calendar; uploading pictures to FB from gallery) do not work (independent of your OS release) due to some changes at the FB end.
Well shucks.
Wouldn't be such a big deal if, like for instance Thunderbird or Google Calendar, the Calendar app could just be pointed at a Facebook events .ical location manually (in fact I was surprised to see that calendar not included in the list of my Google calendars available to enable).
