There seems to be a problem with random shutdowns and reboots and especially in areas with poor reception.

Here's the remedy:

Put some paper or whatever (I used used cleaning cloths wrapping (aluminium inside) to mend it) between the BOTTOM of your battery and your Jolla. This is a very tight space, so don't break your Jolla when squeezing your battery back. This makes the contact tighter between your battery and your Jolla, hence making the impedance lower and your phone more stable.

Look forward for the absolutely immense battery life... and the solid life you get with your device! The amount of 'paper' should at least 0,5mm, I had something about 1,5mm

My battery sits pretty tight. After 1.0.4.20 I had 11 days of uptime, then suddenly random reboots again. I pulled out battery for 10 minutes as advised by @Stskeeps and added piece of paper - so far 2 days uptime and one "soft reset" - green blinking LED and all applications closed on event screen. Still to early to really judge if it works. And which of the fixes is doing the job :)

The same behavior as @zlatko for me. I pulled the battery out for 10min and restarted. I try not to use the piece of paper as the battery is tight and it is probably not the problem of the shutdown otherwise it would have appeared before. I had the same kind of behaviour before the last update for 10 days. I'll keep you posted.

No reboots and shutdowns for me since 1st of April after pulling out battery for 10 minutes and adding a piece of paper.

While this is a nice jury rig that might give us the extra mileage, thank you! ; still it is imperative that this issue, introduced presumably by an unlucky combination of hardware design, seasonally low ambient temperatures and mental firmware, is fixed for the broad audience. I'm a private user, nerd, and very well aware of the beta status of the phone ; I deem the current condition a show stopper if we're talking about business use, where a missed phone call, showing up too late because of a bootlooped device withholding my electronic train ticket, costs real money and reputation.

Totally agree!

Like many others, I also had a case of random reboots. My average uptime was about 6 hours. Then I did the paper trick and halleluiah, the reboots stopped for about two months.

Until last weekend, that is. I was staying at a hotel; took the phone of the charger in the morning, put it in my shirt pocket and went to breakfast. By the time I came back to the room, the phone had rebooted. With the battery full, thick folded paper holding it in place, no one using it. Or another time it rebooted while I was browsing my Gallery. All in all, it rebooted about three to four times each day.

A phone you cannot rely on is worse than no phone at all. At least if you do not have a phone, people do not expect you to be contactable.

My battery was pretty tight, too, but i had really a lot of shutdowns and reboots. During the first 2 month there was no Problem. Latest firmware and removing the battery wasn't succesful. So i decided to try the paper method. Since that there haven't been any shutdown and i can use my jolla :-)

Yes, I had trouble with random reboots and tried the paperfix and haven't had any trouble after that! A bit funny fix, but hey, atleast we don't need the piece of folio anymore for the NFC-bug.. ;) This is DIY (or should we say DIT) at it's best!

Hi, I have random shutdowns when using "4G preferred", that is... it seems that the Jolla phone doesn't like loss of network connection between GSM/3G/4G. When using "3G only" settings, it rarely (if ever) shuts down by itself...

I was also still experiencing reboots in areas with bad or no network coverage (surfing internet on the train) after the 1.0.4.20 update. I haven't tried the paper trick yet, but one thing I noticed between reboots was that the clock as a little bit off each time. so I tried disabling the "automatic clock syncing" and I haven't had a reboot since. Now, I don't know how Jolla syncs the clock (ntp or via the wireless network) but I guess it might have put additional strain on the battery while in an area with low coverage, when the radio has to look for it with full power?

My experience is similar, I updated to 1.0.4.20 while I was abroad in France and I got reboots fairly often in the house where I was staying, almost always when using wifi. Other places were better, but not perfect. If I booted up without entering my PIN, so no mobile network, there were no reboots. Since I returned to Belgium (Telenet/Mobistar network), I haven't had any similar reboots, not even in the train with spotty coverage.

I got my jolla december 2013. I have these random shutdowns now since one week. having a shutdown 1-3 times a day. not that nice actually.

Yes I know, can be super boring. It is not a solution but try to use your phone a bit differently as I also do: Try to avoid to use Wifi and data at the same time, switch off the last one in use before switching on the second one. Remove the battery for a long time every now and then. To save space and to have a clean install, I reseted the device for the last update. At least I had some improvements on my side.

had the same issue 3 days back after installing android mwssages and power utilities from warehouse.might have been a coincident. phone went down to 4% within minutes and after loading for 5 min back to 59%. this happened multiple times. reset did help. uninstall not. i would suspest the battery volt meter

I think I found the cause of the loose battery contact. I'm quite confident that the people affected by this problem can find a little dent at the bottom of their battery where the spring has been pushing it towards the contacts. That's why the paper trick works: the design of the battery casing is not taking into account the force of the spring pushing against it. (Or the design of the phone didn't take the weakness of the case into account.) Quite silly design fault, if you ask me...
