Hello Sailors! Here is pretty simple question for you: have you managed to convince any of your friends or collegues or whatever, who actually never heard about Jolla before, to switch to it? What were the major difficulties while taliking with your friends about it? I know every one of us tried to do it. You can write about your experience on this subject in comments and please vote, so we could get some numbers.

This is a Poll question, so please tick the "Community Wiki" checkbox when posting an Answer to this Question.

Due to my age, my friends see a mobile phone for what it is; something to make calls with and to send the occasional text.

When I showed a few friends the Jolla and what it couldn't do, I was the laughing stock for about 5 minutes until we all needed our oxygen tanks to breathe, bearing in mind this was OS 1.0.0.5 (the beginning).

If anything, the phone didn't raise any eyebrows, but created plenty of frowny faces, as to why I had spent so much money on an incomplete phone! (They didn't quite understand the bit about development by the user).

The best part about the phone for my friends, is you can change its appearance with new TOH's, until I told them how much they were, now one of my friends is still recovering in hospital, after laughing himself into an asthma attack!

I got given a Samsung Galaxy S2 with a broken USB port (repaired for £7) and installed a stable version of Cyanogenmod. The screen is bright, the phone is functional and above all, it does what you ask of it and to be honest, I like it!, it all works!

A friend still uses his immaculate Nokia N8 (he won't part with it), which if we are honest, the only thing that really lets that phone down, is the OS, otherwise, it's a cracking camera, then the USB OTG, the HDMI out, all nice features. Even the S2 will output video with the right cable! (MHL).

It's Nokia or Samsung for the majority of my friends, who got their phones on contract back in the days of Jesus and refuse to upgrade, because and I quote; "I like my little phone, it's very reliable and I know how to use it". (Wow, I sounds like an old fart!!, I'm mid 40's, not so old, eh?) :D

I'm selling my Jolla, it was bought with money I didn't have, I've had the experience (been, seen, done it) so I will repay my debt from Jolla proceeds, maybe a friend might like to buy it, but I doubt that very much, that will be like trying to sell sand to Arabs.

Right, all jokes and japes aside, I quite like my Jolla, but not enough to be keeping hold of it, it's going on eBay this week! I noticed one went for £320.00, 'The First One' edition, which mine is. Minus the stickers, which are now hiding dents on my mountain bike and fridge and of course, my t-shirt is well worn already, but the Jolla is still immaculate, so off to auction it is!

wow, it's really sad :( i'm myself actually convinced my friend to switch from Iphone 5. She liked gesture-based interface and TOH technology. Although i also have couple of friends with "what the hell is this crap?" attitude =\

  • co-workers like the gesture UI and full screen without bar notification and discrete notifications.

  • my part: too many things not yet working/ready exposed at another topic, This just final beta 1.0.4.20 and not release for my self as end user. version 1.0.4.20 mostly a smartphone for closed group developers level, linux fans, not for end user like user came from SymbianOS S3 Belle on Nokia N8-00 (too many things can doing only at developer mode but should interest user level !)

Still a lot of works before reach more generic customers.

Sometime, i think the SailfishOS/software are mostly used only at developer mode and almost not tested as user level by developer

I think the 'poll' here is a bit out of hand as the answers are more like commentary than actual options to vote for. In my case a few are interested, but a definite and big blocker is the fact it doesn't work with a Mac (really bad for me too). Also the size is a turnoff for some. Apps I have found to be less of an issue.

I would recommend Jolla to a friend, if

  • I could install android applications from google's store without hacking (everybody has some favorite applications (banking etc) which are not available elsewhere)
  • I could use the map application for car navigation
  • the friend is ready to accept the os is still strongly evolving which some limitations

Otherwise I think Jolla is a very nice phone which all essential functions.

google maps work perfectly from play store, so your first two points are kind of as one

It's kinda hard to convince people to invest into an idea/vision they don't already share (partially). Especially such an expensive one. F.e. I didn't buy the Jolla Phone because I'm a poor student and I just can't buy an entry-level Smartphone for High-End prices. If it was like 200€ I would've got one. However, I think the tablet is reasonably priced, still a bit above the rest, but hey, Jolla is small and likeable, most competitors aren't. I ordered one and some friends showed a bit of interest, if the Tab is well built I guess I could find a couple of friends who at least get really interested into Jolla.

Don't be fooled by the marketing around "quad or octa cores" .. what use is a hardware if there is no decent software written to exploit the hardware ? Many of the linux people remember running or even still run Linux on bare bone machines like 64 Mb RAM and 800 Mhz processors.

I am also poor but I recently thought I should put my money where my <3 is and it was one of the best decisions ever. I also was thinking like you but after I laid hands on Jolla and am exploring it with gestures, multitasking and hell yeah root shell .. I was like WTF did I do all these days , I should have bought it long back. BTW Jolla via the store is now 250 euros.

Trust me, I'm not fooled by marketing, I know what I need in a device. I don't need Quad/Octa-cores, but I wanted a screen with 300+ ppi, since I read quite a lot on my device, Kanji that is and you want high ppi to read Kanji. That was what kept me from buying a Jolla device. If it featured a Single-Core, but ~300ppi AMOLED I'd have gotten it, no matter the price, but 250ppi IPS just wasn't what I was looking for. I got a BB Z10 now and I'm very happy with it. Still I'm really looking forward to the Jolla tablet. It's reasonably priced, the screen is nice (4:3 Hell yeah!) and I think the OS fits tabs quite well. I'm very hyped.

[edited for language fluency] Consider the experience of someone who works for a mobile network operator. People show interest in something and it's weird. The balloon of enthusiasm deflates when they see phone specs and Jolla store. This supposedly makes SailfishOS like Plan9: a fantastic operating system with a small user-base due to lack of applications and accessories.

I'm not going to convince anyone since Sailfish isn''t a ready OS. It's hard just to convince myself not to sell it. They said that Sailfish is commercially ready...well, I don't think so: no Mac support, no proper Android notification system, no accessibility settings, just to mention the first things that came to my mind. We are in 2014 and this is simply unacceptable. I paid my jolla, I was one of the first ones to be very disappointed, but since I paid it I will keep it (I don't know anyone who could be interested to sell it). The only thing I'm sure about is: no more jolla for me. I wish all the best to jolla, but the real thing is that they came out with their product too early, when it wasn't ready, in my opinion. However I hope they will improve, we need alternatives to iOS, Android and Windows, but with a full set of functionalities.

"they came out with their product too early, when it wasn't ready, in my opinion"

Sounds like you bought before knowing what you were buying. The entire point of being an early adopter of a beta product is that you, together with the other early adopters, get to give the OS shape, before it is ready to really sell to the average Joe.

That said I don't agree with the 'out of beta' tag Sailfish has got since 1.0.4.20, as there is still a lot missing before the OS is really coherent.

This is my opinion, I didn't buy it without knowing the situation. I think they came out too early even for a beta product. That's all.

Gabir ( 2014-04-05 15:02:14 +0300 )edit

"Mac Support" ? Can't you apple guys install SSHFS on your mac's to access Jolla via SSH ? And why do you need to connect your mac to Jolla everytime ? For file transfers initially SD card or SSH should be fine. "Android Notifications" - For me they do work out well but not as properly as the native ones. You have to give sailfish os the credit where its due. Its meant to run native apps and everything from android is a "bonus" !

pavi ( 2014-11-26 10:40:06 +0300 )edit

@pavi - yes. i can also install windows on my mac or use my old N9, which is still way better mobile than Jolla (IMHO).

cropas ( 2014-11-26 18:01:26 +0300 )edit

@pavi So the sales rep in a store should just tell people "Can't you just install SSHFS?"...yeah right...this is not how you sell a product to NORMAL PEOPLE.

someone with iphone3g was interested in buying one. but after i explained what is not working and what have to be done before you have basic things running he lost all interest.

the NO came after: no, you can't sync with your mac. average user don't know sftp and don't want to put SD-card in mac to transfer music. apple/iPhone user are used to working things. so there has to be a possibility to sync all your stuff: calendar, music, contacts etc. easily.

plus: native browser is unusable.

calddav is missing.

real copy, paste, cut.

ect.

if you are used to an iphone where everything just works and dont want to get rid of icloud and apple, then there is no reason to switch. the second reason is to have someting you have to get working. but after that you are still missing too many things.

No, still not.

I think Sailfish OS is still a beta but of course it's much more a phone for the people than it was some weeks ago. When people asks I usually tells a lot of the Jolla story and it catches a lot of interest, maybe it could be my ridiculously large enthusiasm for the Jolla company.

Most of my friends has asked a lot of questions about the phone, mostly because my I´m the first one t-shirt... In fact a lot of them seems to be a little impressed af the phone but the main answer is "It seems to be a little bit to complicated for me". I don't think it is, maybe they don't get the entire experience as I find so nice, It's much harder to find some motivation for them to buy a new phone when they don't think they need a new one.

I really like my Jolla, I don't think it's hard to adapt other ways to use a phone, skip some of my old doings or things like that as I had to do in the beginning, it was harder for my friends or family to for example use e-mail instead of MMS (my mom is pretty happy now when MMS works, she never felt comfortabe to open pictures through mail in her phone, but of course she wanted pics of her granddaughter...). I'm not an advanced user but like to try tweaks and stuff much more than any one I know except my brother, but he needed a new phone very quick so he had to buy another before the Jollas was for sale.

According to my experiences, the gestures would still need some work. For example, the fade out effect when swiping the active application to the switcher is just too confusing. The notification area is confusing. These might not be confusing to us (geeks), but it certainly is to "normal" people. When I gave my Jolla to my gf (who is actually also a software engineer), first thing she said was "Wtf happened? What did I do?".

I have had an iphone 3GS for five years. I did and do a lot with it. My family and I have always had a Mac. Wonderful products. The syncing and streaming are very nice and easy, but this is also a trap: it doesn't match with other systems. Because I was tired of the race for better and better, because I don't want to be a commercial prey constantly and because I love my privacy (not at FB) I was looking for something different. I am a bit stubborn and like alternative ways, so I bought a Jolla. In fact this is one step forwards : better screen than iphone 3GS, wow, no home button, better privacy with Finnish laws, more speedy browsing, different shapes of apps. But also one step backwards : the sound of the speakers inside is far too low for good hearing, often trouble with connectivity/WLAN, I miss apps like banking, classical music, good apps only made for iphone, good voice guidance with satnav (my dear Navigon), some games, I cannot stream from my Jolla to the tv yet. Well, I miss a lot, but Jolla/Sailfish has potential and I really hope the are going to improve their products. I convinced my husband to buy a Jolla. It's his first smartphone, since he can play wordfeud on it, it is ok for him!

WordFeud? I struggle to get it to work on my jolla! (running 1.1.1.27) It doesnt start properly "Wordfeud has stopped unexpectedly" .. sigh! Any hints?

Ryan ( 2015-01-26 10:19:24 +0300 )edit

Ryan, if you have 1.1.1.27, it should be possible to play WordFeud on a Jolla. Try WordFeud 2.5.4. by Htcsense or Darkpsytrancer at Aptoide. (Search for Htcsense in 'other stores') . Not the free WordFeud. Wish you success, because it is such a nice game! KEA S-W
