My contacts hit the +300 entries and it is close to impossible to be fast using the chars-pattern on the bottom, neither is the search function that a good to use.

If you want to stick to the chars-pattern make it expand between letters and not by row so you can have the next letter below the expanded and not have to scroll back up to get to the next letter.

I also think the filtering of contacts should be tweaked a bit. I was scanning my contacts in search of "duplicates" coming from different services to merge, and when at the bottom of, let's say, the L list, I had to scroll up a lot to select the next letter.

@Orologiaio How useful it would be to have, instead, some kind of an automatic "search for dupes" function.

NikosAlexandris ( 2013-12-24 21:58:44 +0300 )edit

Problem is, some people have real name on facebook, nickname on gtalk, another nickname on twitter etc. so while this would surely help, it wouldn't solve all issues.

what do you mean by recent? For me the People app should start with the search bar and the keyboard actif. The pads with letters like windows phone is not easy to use once the number of contacts is great. I have also more than 200 and it is a pain to scroll.

Personally I think N9 had it pretty right: normal list, but you were able to jump the list with a 'scrollbar' on the right where letters from A-Z (or just first contact to last contact?) were available. As far as I can see, though, that widget doesn't exist in Jolla.

As the world gets smaller, people list should be developed considering there are 1000 contacts. My humble suggestion: People (first screen)

  • Pulley menu: Add, Search, Show latest (new), Show group (new), Show all (new)
    • Add as current
    • Search as current, except for hold gesture: instead of current mini menu, hold to show latest activity (calls, message beginnings, file transfers)
    • Show latest would open fullscreen list of all contacts with image + name, ordered by latest activity. Gestures as above.
    • Show group would open list of your saved groups, tapping one would show images + names in that group in fullscreen view. Gestures as above.
    • Show all would open a fullscreen list of names (no images) in alphabetical order, with a scrolling bar. When scrolling with a bar, currently active first letter showing somewhere. Gestures as above.
  • Header: Favourite people, as it is now, but 16 of them (half the screen). No latest activity visible as now. Gestures as above, added with long hold=drag&drop. Drop among other favourites to a new place, or drag&drob down (to the black area below) to remove from favourites.
  • Body: Empty black space (or maybe a dim hand writing icon) where you can immediately start to write with gestures (hand writing). After writing first letter, favourites would be hidden from the header, replaced by a matching list. List would get shorter as you gesture-write more, finally finding your contact. Gestures in the header as above (no drag&drop)
  • Footer: low correction bar for the hand writing, separated from the body with a thin horizontal line. Footer bar gestures: pull left = remove letter, pull right = remove all, tap = space

I like the current recent activity as it is an approximation of favorites and I would really dislike the handwriting idea as it is inaccurate and slow.

If anyone is interested - to get search bar on by default in the People application, just add the following line into /usr/share/jolla-contacts/pages/ContactsListPage.qml to set the searchEnabled property to true:

searchEnabled: true

This comes into ContactBrowser element, for you can put this line just after the line

id: contactBrowser

This will make the search box appear on People application startup. People app must be closed and restarted (can be done from gui). File change must be done as root.

If you want to add the search feature to the phone app repeat your steps in /usr/lib/qt5/qml/Sailfish/Contacts/ContactSelectPage.qml (add the same line).

Phone application must be restarted (just do killall voicecall-ui as nemo user, phone app will be restarted automatically). You can't restart phone application from phone UI (part of the application still runs on background).

Use this at your own risk as it might void your warranty. Don't forget to backup the original files in case of mistakes. However contact list becomes finally usable if you have 500+ people in your contact list.

Yes, this is great. Took me two minutes to do (and that included installing nano) and makes the people app much easier to use.

Stuarty ( 2014-03-03 16:56:40 +0300 )edit

Could it be that this is not working with the last update? Nano opens but it is empty. (Saapunki)

damourti ( 2014-06-10 10:22:43 +0300 )edit

Works for me in latest 1.0.7.16 update... Dont' forget you need to make changes as root user.

lomo ( 2014-06-10 10:30:05 +0300 )edit

yes I'm root, it feels that the qml file is empty, weird...

suggestions on how to improve the People app:
(some things are similar or same as others already have suggested)

When you open it, you have, from top to bottom

  • up in Pulley:
Show/Hide search (as in present version, but see below!)
Edit groups (new - see below)
Add contact (as in present version)

  • Favourites: pictures (when available) or name (as in present version)

  • Recent as clickable link
Clicking takes you to new page¹, where all Recent actions are listed as in present version.
Pull right-to-left takes you back to the People start page.
This way, they're easily accessible, but still not in the way.

  • Show [remember last choice: All/[list of available groups]] as clickable link; switch with longpress.
Clicking takes you to new page¹, with All/(everyone in group choice) in alphabetic order (no alphabet grid).
Pull right-to-left takes you back to the People start page.
Group names are editable in Pulley menu, and an additional "Add to group" (with on/off toggles for each available group) is found along with Edit (etc.) in the Pulley for each contact. It is possible to add a contact to any number of groups. Even if all groups are removed, everyone still remains in the "All" category.
Groups can be of use both to collect work contacts, relatives, etc., but also, say, "people attending upcoming party" (just remove it when it's no longer needed!).

  • Search
    also:
Settings → Apps → People: on/off toggles for [possibility to Show/Hide in Pulley] and [Show as default].

  • Alphabet grid as in present version, but choosing a letter takes you to new page¹, instead of opening it in the grid.
Pull right-to-left takes you back to the People start page.

¹ If the new page covers more than one screen, "go to top/bottom" arrows will appear (triggered by (flicks? pulls? - same as in e.g. the Tidings app)).
If the user just chose the wrong letter / link, it's easy to just pull right-to-left and choose again.

I think what is needed most is contact categories, so that you can filter your contacts by catogeries.

When you want to email a collegue, you don’t need all your friends and family contacts in the way. When you are trying to find the doctor whom you don’t remember the name, but noted the number and profession in your contacts list, you need to filter out all other contacts

Categories is the way to go !

I would simply make two changes:

1- Add a search bar always visible down, and if clicked the keyboard appears and let you search. Search function in pulley menu could be removed, because with this, it wouldn't be needed. Searching by first letter wouldn't be needed.

2- Add the option for calling a number in the pulley menu, so you only need People app for doing everything. Phone app wouldn't be needed.

Does the alphabet grid pick up your (non-western) locale? I ask because A-Z is a bit limiting when for example Scandinavians have å, ä/æ & ö/ø and you need to manually search for those letters.

Yes it does, i tried it on Contacts, there is a tile with letter Ł - Polish starting letter for Łukasz name. So it seems to me that this is working as expected.

poulwiel ( 2015-01-11 16:12:34 +0300 )edit

So I'm guessing you have the system language set to Polish as well? Not just your keyboard?

Tried to change my system locale as well to Swedish and got the extra ÅÄÖ letter in People now. I would fix this - the alphabet grid should follow the language you've set for the keyboard.

i dont think so, if you have foreign friends you will not have a shortcut to any of them having special letter on front of their names. Instead letter shortcut widget should simply search for the list it is presenting and choose apropriate letters for this specific list. So one can have Ł letter in contacts but on other list it might be not present.

See my suggestion here:suggestion-make-keyboard-easily-available-in-any-application which could tackle this problem.

Quick explanation: I'm using this thread to again propose my idea of a global gesture for the on-screen keyboard. If you could e.g. swipe with two fingers from the bottom and have a keyboard you could fuzzy search your contacts easily. This would extend/translate to almost any application where something can be selected (also think of windows explorer etc. which work this way).

With a hardware keyboard (i.e. TOHKBD) this would no longer necessary but for all other users I'd find this a very nice usability improvement.

Can you edit your feature request about the keyboard to make it a bit more clear? That'll bump the request so more people can see it, too. I really like the idea and think it could work fantastically well, especially when holding the phone with two hands doing a double-finger swipe from the bottom is easy and immediately puts your fingers where they need to be to start typing.

I changed the post to a wiki. Perhaps I should do a mock-up screenshot to make clear what I mean but unfortunately I'm quite busy currently. Btw: my old request is here

Sorry, I wasn't clear, I meant to ask you to update that old request!

Ok, changed the old post, remember to upvote it :)

@rod this is actually a completely new feature request, can you please post this as a separate question(and do not mark it as wiki it is your idea so you should earn credit for that)?
