In Settings → Apps → Mail I set the synchronization period to “Manual”, but still I get notifications about mail when I’m not using the Mail app, even when the Phone is offline.

How do I make sure the Phone is not spending power and data volume on Mail unless I tell it to?

If I follow your directions; Settings > Apps > Mail - No sync option is offered here.

However, if you follow Settings > Accounts > then click on an email account and in the next window at the bottom of the page, there are the Sync options.

I have 4 POP email accounts on my Jolla, all sync options are set to Manual. I only get mail if I choose to sync, it should be the same for you.

Same here, I have my mail account set to sync manually and still get notifications of new mail even when not using the phone. Even without running the mail application. (Sync set to manual in settings -> Accounts -> mailaccount).

This is quite unexpected and annoyingly uses up data volume when not connected to Wifi.

Sorry, I meant Settings > Accounts > Mail account.

It seems that the symptoms have disappeared. Maybe the settings don’t take immediate effect? FrederikF, did you change the settings just shortly before getting the unexpected notifications?

no, I've not changed that setting for quite a while and still see the issue. (Or to be a bit more precise, there are periods where the mail app clearly doesn't sync, at other times it continues to sync and alert me about new mails without me checking. All without changing the configuration and so far not according to any pattern I've been able to detect.)
