In short: the native email apps' folder view was chock- full of copies of the same folder names over and over again. Below is the whole story from start to end, and a question: am I possibly correct in my thoughts about the cause of it, and can it do any harm to the system in a longer run?

When doing a factory reset about two months ago, I backed up only the settings/ accounts, and got rid of all the apps I didn't deem necessary at the moment. This included the native email client, so I went a couple of months without any emails coming to the phone (obviously). Yesterday I finally re- installed it, and was quite surprised when I opened the folder view: there where literally hundreds of copies in semi- random order of the Gmail main folder and the sub- folders, and none of those which I tried, would sync, except the few solitary ones at the top of the list.

I removed the account and email app, did a reboot and then re- installed app and added the Gmail account again, which solved the issue.

After giving it some thought, I came to a conclusion: as I hadn't for some reason (forgetfulness, propably :) ) deactivated the Gmail account (or set it to manual sync), it had tried to sync the mail account to the phone every half an hour for nearly two months, and when finally an email client was installed, dumped all of those syncs in the app...

Now, the question again: am I possibly correct in my thoughts about the cause of this, and can it do any harm to one's system in a longer run, or if multiple accounts behave the same simultaneously?

Notes:

-I did a search (as you do), but didn't find anything even resembling this.

-I'm not a programmer in any way, so you have to take this as a "layman's" interpretation of the issue.

-The phone is running update 9, and the only email account ever synced to it is the Gmail account mentioned.

Sorry for the long-winded text, and thanks for your time! Kayakist

I seemed to have reproduced the bug. Was trying to fix imap syncing to server. This worked after some time by renameing servers trash folder to "Deleted items". Now folders are syncing. And folders that have old mails marked as deleted on server duplicate on every sync. Finally even deleting mails on jolla also deletes from server, with the slightly annoying feature of making duplicates in Deleted items on server.

I´ll try your approach and see if it fixes issue.

That sounds like a bug somewhere, it should not duplicate the list of folders in any case. If you remove the app and sync was in manual mode not sync should have happen after that, if it was not in manual mode, sync would happen but no harm to the system.

Having deleted mails in server folders other than trash seems to have caused my duplicates. Folders without deleted items didn't duplicate. Mails marked read, unread, answered, forwarded or flagged caused no problems. My guess is that jolla simply couldn't understand what server was sending (mails marked as deleted but not sent to trash) , and created duplicate folders on every sync instead of writing over the one(s) on the phone.

So configured server to send all deleted items straight to trash and renamed trash to Deleted items (same as jolla), which seemed easier than fiddling with dev. mode. And then of course sweeped up all deleted items on different server-folders into trash so no more duplicates are created.

Then did as suggested in the question. Deleted account and uninstalled email app, rebooted and installed email and setup account. Now it all works.

Notable things

  1. duplicate problem surfaced after i had renamed trash can and server didn't understand to keep sending to renamed trash but kept deleted files in original folders.

  2. once created, duplicate folders all seem to sync normally with server, with their own copies of the same mails. this seems to be the cause of duplicated deleted items in the trash can.

  3. Once created, i didn't find a way to easily delete the duplicate files other than the above solution.
