Hello all, Sailfish OS is getting better and better, with those monthly updates, and even though I don't own a Jolla Phone, I did support Jolla for the tablet, and I might get the Jolla phone 2 when it launches. So, in my opinion, the biggest problem right now is native apps. Instead of waiting for companies to develop their apps for Sailfish, we should focus on specific apps that most Jolla users want, and send individual requests to them so they know we are here and there is a market for it. Whatsapp is imo one of the basic fundamental app, so I sent my request today, your turn now! :-) Send them an email via their website, and let them know you want a Sailfish native app! Please drop a message here too when it's done!

You must be new round here ... monthly updates? Last stable update was over 4 months ago .. October's update was opt-in and unstable. Updates aren't monthly. To address the premise of your statement / question, they won't even begin to consider an official client until Sailfish has an installed base in the millions. That is a very long way off. @coderus is working on a replacement for mitakuuluu (native whatsapp client) that will be ready some time in the new year. that is the best and only bet if you don't wish to use the Android client.

@meowmeow: Not one update per calendar month (which wasn't what anyone had promised), but a total of 11 updates since they released the phone. That's pretty much exactly 1 update per month, isn't it?

If you want to use something everywhere and for a long time use something with an open standard and open source/implementation.

People using closed services ARE the main problem to this whole whatsup/mitakuuluu fiasko. You have to understand that they that control the service make the rules and can do whatever they want. Its not a jolla problem neither a dev problem. Its your problem.

Ok I see your point, but if they ever want to get attention from the mainstream users, it will only happen if there is at least the basics apps that everybody uses are available. Even if people want to avoid certain apps that are known to make bucks on your back via using your private info etc, well it is very difficult to do so, as it gets to the point where the app itself becomes the "standard" that everybody uses. Here I started with Whatsapp, but it could be any other app. And if there is an real alternative to an existing app on the Jolla store, then perfect, no complain from my side. :-) So here is a friendly question (as I don't own any Jolla phone to access their store yet), is there a messaging app that could potentially replace whatsapp on there?

Users can use the android app if they need it so much. Not an optimal solution but anyway. I also prefer native stuff.

As for replacement i hope webrtc (ie firefox hello) catches up and kills skype and all the other stuff once and for all. We need something equivelent to email for IM.

It is partly a Jolla problem, because the Android app doesn't function as it should: it only sounds notifications when you are in the app (not even when it's on the app switcher), and it does not see the phone's contacts. It seems that Android compatibility is not up to scratch...

Donate to @coderus then. He's working on a new native client. Whatsapp won't work on one now ... and maybe ever.

@ziplepingouin: You're getting it all wrong. It's not about getting attention from mainstream users by using the basic apps that everybody's become used to. Because this will keep those who provide the services (facebook, twitter, whatsapp,....) in control forever. They will always be in the position to dictate what applications you're allowed to use... and in doing so, they'll controll your operating system and (in the mobile market) thereby your hardware. That's absurd and the principle will never ever change, even if whatsapp would be nice to you and create an official Sailfish app (which thx god they won't).

The only thing you can do is finally learn that whatsapp is the enemy and stop supporting them. Each user they have makes their network more attractive. You're not their customer, you're their product: What whatsapp offers to others is that they can contact you over this network. Stop supporting them. Stop supporting a company that controls people in such a way. That's the only way to go.

In my opinion the solution for the whatsapp problem is to improve the android integration into Sailfish: background service without having the UI open, better contact synchronizations and reliable notifications.
