In addition to the recently started poll about the resolution of the next Jolla Phone I would like to start a poll regarding the screen size.

What is the ideal screen size for you?

I have listed a few screen sizes below, just choose one of them. If your prefered screen size is not listed feel free to add it as an answer. Keep in mind that the answer has to be community wiki as well.

Screen size does not really matter, important for me are the dimensions of the device. The current Jolla phone is ok, but I do not want a bigger one. Smaller (just like the N9) would be even better.

So it looks like Jolla should really consider making two (different sized) new phones, with similar specs.

4.5", as is, since it is useable with one hand. And the tablet is on its way... ;-)

R.G. Sidler ( 2014-11-26 01:49:35 +0300 )edit

The tablet part has nothing to do. Even if it were a 5"-range phone to be used with both hands, you could not replace it with a tablet.

@pulsar just to help you understand: If I want a bigger screen, I would buy a tablet. That is my personal opinion, which isn't subject to discuss. And, b.t.w. I CAN replace it by a tablet, if I personally want to do so. I for myself know, what I can and what I can't. If you have a different opinion, please state it as such and don't tell people, what they can do or not.

I would prefer phone dimensions to remain the same as the current Jolla phone and increase screen size e.g. to 4.7 by minimizing bezel margins. Besides TOH compatibility can be maintained too.

Actuall dimessions of the screen pretty much fulfill my needs. Only change in size I would be happy of is smaller jolla. Sometimes its quite hard to me to close an app by swiping down the screen or reach the cover action while using phone by one hand. Comfortable one handed use is one if the main reasons I bought Jolla.

@Mądry: Good Point, the case must be sleeker and slimmer. Only under that circumstance they could build in a bigger Screen.

Unless they offer a larger alternative, this would be commercial suicide for Jolla. However I'm sure it won't stop the small but vocal group of luddites here and at talk.maemo upvoting this and downvoting everything else.

4,5 with smaller bezels. Bigger screen is hard to operate with one hand.

For an entry Level Jolla => perfect size! My GF doesn´t like big phones at all, she definitely would buy a smaller Jolla phone. She likes the Sailfish OS but not the size of the device.

florifreeman ( 2014-11-25 21:10:58 +0300 )edit

My kid is just eleven but she needs a power tool with a smaller size. Sooner or later your girlfriend will want something better too... But I think it would be better to have the smaller phone as number three.

Always thought and still do that the Nokia N9 (3.9") is the perfect screen size for a purely guesture-based OS (like Sailfish). 4 inches still allows you to control the phone with one hand without having to awkwardly move your thumbs. I don't think it is low level. Anyways, I think they will stick with the 4.5" due to TOH concept. It would be a shame if all people who invested in the Keyboard Otherhalf for example will not be able to use it with their new phone.

I prefer the size of n9. Quite handy though. If jolla 2 had a curved glass, that would be awesome!

+1 on this BBut the size of the phone should stay so TOHs still fit and work

Agreed if dimentiones of the phone stays the same. The phone should support older versions of TOH. (And improve it, but thats another discussion).

Galaxy S5 has almost the same size and the Screen is much bigger....what matters is the case sizing. New phone could get a sleeker case with bigger Screen AND could Support the old TOH.

This is as far as my hands reach. +1 for keeping tOH size.

vattuvarg ( 2014-11-25 23:26:14 +0300 )edit

IIRC, the Jolla is pretty much the same size as the Motorola RAZR HD which is 4.7" so the compatibility with current TOH can be kept.

Therefore, I vote for this one (in 720p which is enough for this size)

a 5 inches with same form factor would be great

ilcicali ( 2014-11-26 15:44:58 +0300 )edit

I think that Web is the main driver for screen size. Now, iPhone has moved to around 5 inch size as well as Android even to 5+ size, the Web will eventually follow by sites to be optimized for that size. That makes more or less must to follow the majority average size to be able to enjoy Web content as it is intended. That's same as you browse the Web by using 7..8 inch device and everything is ridiculous big if you select to see Mobile version.

In contrary more and more of Web content is start to hard to consume by using around 4 inch device because e.g. font sizes start to be rather small, but just perfect on 5".

I´m not a TOH-fan, but for those who bought a lot of TOHs, particularly if it is a more expensive one (like TOHKBD) it is important to get a Jolla 2 with same dimensions like Jolla 1, because the TOH compatibility. In this case it would be a good thing if Jolla 2 gets a bigger display by same size of device.

I by myself prefer a smaller device with same display like Jolla 1 (4,5'') because it´s more handy and doesn´t need more power. I think a longer battery service life is more important. For people who needs bigger displays there is a tablet available next year. And btw, the resolution of 960x540 pixels is enough for me. I don´t understand the olympic run for higher and higher resolutions on phone market. It makes the device unnecessary expensive.

There is still place to fit a bit bigger screen in the same shell as Jolla 1 - just loose the black borders.

smoku ( 2014-11-26 13:40:51 +0300 )edit

When you buy a new car, do you carry over your old wheels or sell them together with the car? Sell the TOHs together with the Jolla (or continue using them with it if you are going to keep it) and buy new ones in the new format (it's not that hard making new ones for new phone models if the electrical interface is kept the same).

If I had custom made, oak rims with white rubber tires and LED illumination, I would definitely look for a new car I could fit these wheels to, rather than wait until the manufacturer remakes a new set for me.

Surely not larger than the screen of the first handset. Resolution is another matter. I'm talking more about the physical dimensions of the whole device, not actual screen space (which can be larger if margins are decreased).

No 5+" size please (unless you'll offer both options).

Other sizes would be quite nice, however I would not say for "Jolla 2".

What would be nice would be a setup with different Form Factors (like Samsung Galaxy or nowadays iPhone does), so there could be a "Jolla 2 mini", a "Jolla 2" and a "Jolla 2 maxi".

Especially considering TOHKBD or other functional other halfs I think it is a must to remain compatible, I would in deed be annoyed if the next generation Jolla would make all TOH's obsolete. Therefore I think the main steps should be "under the hood" without touching the outside too much. The "standard size" Jolla 2 should simply be of similar form as the current one with similar TOH connection.

With a setup with different sizes anybody could choose whether he wants to upgrade whilst keeping his TOH's useful whilst also everybody would have the chance to go for a different form. Inside specs could be similar as much as possible.

iPhone 6 comes in two sizes and the smaller one gets 85 percent of the sales.

Note that Apple already had phones with 4" displays in the 5s and 5c.

If there will be a "Mini" version in future, Jolla should do it like Sony. Their "Minis" are as powerful as their bigger brothers. I don't like the "Minis" of Samsung and HTC which have less power in comparison to the devices with the same name except for "Mini".
