[Jolla Tablet] Introducing Stretch Goals in the Campaign! [not a question]
Dear Jolla Community,
Thanks to your tremendous support, we have now reached close to 1.3 million USD in the Jolla Tablet Indiegogo Campaign!
We are now introducing Stretch Goals, which are additional funding goals that will finance specific features of the Jolla Tablet.
These are as follows:
Goal #1 - $1,500,000: MicroSDHC support up to 128GB
Once we reach the first goal, every Jolla Tablet will be upgraded to support MicroSDHC cards up to 128GB!
You’ll never have to worry about running out of space again.
Currently Jolla Tablet supports cards up to 32GB, besides having 32GB internal storage.
Goal #2 - $1,750,000: Split Screen
Split screen allows you to view and use two apps simultaneously, enhancing Sailfish OS’ multitasking capabilities even further.
Split screen is the 3rd most wanted Jolla Tablet feature by you right here on TJC, and we’re thrilled to offer it to you as one of the goals!
Split screen will be available to you as a software update during Q3/2015.
Goal #3 - $2,500,000: Cellular data for $30
Our third goal, one of the most wanted tablet features by our community, offers an amazing value for our Indiegogo campaign contributors.
If we reach $2.5M, you can upgrade your Wifi only Jolla Tablet to 3.5G+Wifi for a mere $30!
With most tablets on the market, similar upgrade costs at least $100.
We’ll make the “Upgrade to 3.5G” Perk available if the campaign reaches $2.5M. 3.5G upgrade is first offered only in EU, but we’re looking to add more markets later. If we’ll add your market after the Indiegogo campaign but before Jolla Tablet delivery, you’ll be able to upgrade your tablet with the same price.
The 3.5G cellular connectivity is expected to be available for Jolla Tablets as a software update during Q3/2015 due to demanding certification and field testing requirements.
Short FAQ:
Q. Why do you have Stretch goals? Why the rest of the most wanted features are not included?
A. You have given us tremendous amount of feedback and wishes, and we have carefully evaluated all the most desired features for the Jolla Tablet.
As much as we would like to, we cannot add all the wanted features for the time being.
For example, many of the suggested hardware upgrades require significant investments in tooling, mechanical design, software
R&D, testing, certifications and several other items. Nevertheless, rest assured that we're doing our best.
We’re doing this together, please keep on contributing your ideas and feedback to us!
Q. I don’t want 3.5G, do I have to upgrade?
A. No, you can still have the original Wifi only Jolla Tablet, with the original delivery date of May 2015.
Thank you again and keep on sailing with us!

What does MicroSDHC support up to 128GB mean, actually? Does this mean you are adding support for the extended FAT filesystem, or is this actually an hardware change? Because if this is the former, it looks a bit like cheating! :)
I know it means having to pay royalties and stuff, but exFAT does not work on my Linux PCs anyway, and I will format my cards in either FAT or EXT2 anyway.

forgrimm ( 2014-11-27 15:31:37 +0200 )edit@mikelima Most probably just buying an exFAT license. :) If you format the card with EXT4 or btrfs, it should work fine, but >32 GB uSD cards come preformatted with exFAT and people might also want to be able to exchange data with their other devices that don't understand EXT4 or btrfs.
MartinK ( 2014-11-27 15:39:21 +0200 )edit@MartinK, yes, that is what I guessed. I do not want to get in people's way, this is a feature that has been requested on the phone too. If it is a software feature, I suppose the phone will get it as well. This may be useful to point out, there may be people waiting for it. Personally, I think card format should not matter at all, I very rarely remove a card from a phone once I put it in. There are easier ways to access the data that do not require opening the phone, find an adaptor, stick the card in, stick the adaptor in the pc, copy data, and reverse.
