Maps that actually work?

I'm new to jolla, the only 2 things I really use my phone for are facebook (full of bugs) and maps for driving. But both the jolla maps, and the google maps I downloaded don't seem to move in current time?

All they do is show a list of instructions/steps, and a picture with a start point and end point. And yes I've got all my settings to be able to track where I am etc

I use my phone as a sat-nav, and have always used iphone maps, notorious for working well, showing all the roads, where abouts you are, the car moving, the text also being spoken out loud. So are both these 2 maps broke or am I just missing something obvious?

google maps doesnt even let you sign in, it says sign in to make it quicker, you click sign in, add new account, and nothing happens

Can't you tap at the map when you are at the view of a list of instructions/steps, and a picture with a start point and end point, and after that tap and hold on screen to focus on your current position? Then it should lock on you and follow you when you move and show the route on map. Still doesn't give you turn by turn instructions but at least it should show your location in realtime over the map.

The best available map app currently is Nokia here maps for android: http://here.com/beta/android

It used to be available on HERE as an apk download, now they refer you to the Google Play store.

If Google Play store hackish installation is required to use Here+maps droid app, I must disagree abt it being the best possible map app for Jolla. OsmAnd or even native Here-maps are way better (even if not feature-complete)..

I hate advertising a proprietary mapping solution and that too which is based on the android one. But this one works! It probably grabs lot of your personal data like every other junk app. Easy way to install it is to go to Aptoide and add the store "boli3" , then search for the here maps and it works. I am not sure if an external store should be trusted or not . Well its your choice :(

Don't bother with Google Play Services (for Google Maps) or apps that need an account to work (Here Maps). Before a native app comes with offline map support (Modrana), the best solution is currently OsmAnd.

It is open source, based on an open service, works offline and has many features.

Disadvantages: an Android app, the UI is not perfect, sends your device info when downloading the maps (see my comment below).

Anyways, get it from the F-Droid store.

Another disatvantage: free version allows you to download 10 maps. Sounds like a lot? - Yeah not so much when you see that Germany is broken down into 18 maps (one for each federal state)...

Another good Android alternative would be Navfree World or Mapfactor.

@Pistol What free version? :) I did advice to download it from the open-source F-Droid repository, didn't I? OsmAnd is open source and F-Droid packages its apps itself from the source, therefore there's no limit on downloading maps. Of course, everyone is welcome to donate to the project, but there's no such limit in the F-Droid version.

To elaborate further - OsmAnd has the limit and OsmAnd+ does not. OsmAnd+ is a paid app on Google Play, but both versions are open source, which allows everyone to package and share either version for free. And such free version of OsmAnd+ is in the F-Droid repo (it is the only version in there).

Nevertheless, if you value the project, you should contribute.

@nodevel: Ah, I did not know that, since I have it from Aptoide. There you get OsmAnd for free, and a paid version of OsmAnd+.

After playing around a bit, I think I like Mapfactor the best - it has a nice and smooth GMaps feel to it and works pretty much the same.

I do agree about supporting developers. But I would prefer not to pay for another Android app again. Now, paid versions of well developed Sailfish apps on the other hand...

Regarding "doesn't track your activity" - do they say so? I use it a lot, but I cannot remember any statement regarding to this.

im also fine with poor maps so far. but i didn't test it while driving (yet). is the turn by turn navigation good? lets say compared to osmand?

Cannot be of help… Neither do I have a car (so did not try navigating like this) nor did I ever use Osmand.

Yes PoorMaps really work, are flezible and routing and navigation work fine by car and pedestrian.. Only thing missng is voice guidance..

Jolla maps does not do turn-by-turn navigation

Google Maps should do, but I've never bothered with it on my Jolla, preferring Navfree which includes downloadable offline maps.

++ Waze: for onLine maps and actual traffic situation. Best navi for going through city.

++ MapFactor Navigator: works best for me as offline maps navi (perfect customization).

-- HERE: too slow on my Jolla. Minimum functions and customization. Needs an account.

-- OsmOnd: I had problems with GPS

waze for live maps and traffic information and here beta works fine for me,no account needed unless you download maps to phone,sound level a bit low though on both

Have you tried ModRana? It is good as a maps application, but no navigation.

Here maps works fine on my Jolla. Just search the web for "here maps beta android". Download apk-file and install it. It works fine. You will have to turn on the permission to install 3rd party apps in your phone's settings menu.

Is positioning turned on in the settings? That was exactly the same with me when I first installed the map. You have to turn it on manually.

I now have the same problems (GPS search/find/search) with the newest Version: 1.0.220 wk45, 8.30.56.114, but the turn-by-turn navigation works (but not as accurate as the previous version).

Tested it with my android tablet - all works fine!?!

Well, I don't know how exactly it is named in English, as I am using a Russian language system. It is in connections menu of the settings. A tiny satellite icon. Tap it and inside turn positioning on. Just tried to re-install this app. Works fine.

Just checked, I have the same versiin number, 1.0.220 wk45 8.30.56.114, but still it work fine with me. Just have no idea, what can be wrong. Sorry.
