I have a Jolla phone from an early pre-order batch, and Sailfish OS on it is the latest public test release with Qt 5 in it.

When battery was near empty, I used the phone to make a call. I've dialed a number, and while the call was in progress there was a beep beep and a notice on the screen that the phone will shut down soon.

I immediately went to connect it to charger (mains, not USB), but it turned itself off before I managed to connect it.

I plugged in the charger expecting that it would start charging. However, red LED started blinking. I've tried re-plugging many times and always the result was the same - red LED blinking.

I managed to turn on the phone again (while presumably there was still some battery power available), and I managed to connect the charger and see the PC/just-charge choice and click on "Just charge". However, the phone was already shutting itself down again and I couldn't manage to keep it running.

I've read in one of forum posts that the person with the same problem has left battery out of the phone for a while, and later it was OK. That solution did not help here -- I left the battery out of the phone for about 12 hours, and here is what is happening with the phone now:

When I connect the charger, the following behavior keeps repeating itself in a loop:

  1. Nothing happens for ~10 seconds
  2. Red LED blinks for ~15 seconds
  3. Blue LED comes up for ~2 seconds (then disappears) and simultaneously black/white charger icon shows up, staying on the screen for ~10 seconds
  4. Charger icon disappears for ~5 seconds, then appears again, and stays on the screen for ~20 seconds
  5. The screen is then black for the next ~20 seconds
  6. Jolla logo shows up, the red LED powers on (not blinking), and then both screen and LED turn off

And that series of steps just keeps repeating itself.

While this is going on, the power button either does not react at all, or sometimes it does and the phone vibrates a bit, but does not affect things significantly. In one of the attempts, it got a little further and a red "0%" showed on the screen, followed by the Jolla logo + red LED and shutting itself down.

Any insight would be appreciated as obviously this is an unusable phone if I can't recover from this.

Did you try to contact care services? Maybe the battery charging status became to low. Did you try the original charger? In some cases I experienced that others won't work.

Hey, it's an original charger, yes, and the same one I've always been using with that phone.

Also, in the information available on-line in the care center (https://jolla.com/support/), I was not able to find anything that would target this problem.

Thanks for the pointer, I did so and will report here if any noteworthy updates come from that thread.

SUCCESS:

As an experiment, I have just tried taking out the battery and connecting the charger without it. The phone vibrated and LED flashed white every second. I tried pressing and releasing the power button while this was going on, although it did not have any particular effect (besides making the charger icon appear on screen). Then I disconnected the charger, re-inserted the battery, and re-connected the charger back.

I did this twice. The first time, there was no visible change in behavior. The second time, it seemed as nothing has changed, but after not more than a couple minutes the phone booted and came up with the home screen, and the LEDs turned blue, as usual when the phone is charging.

I checked the battery status indicator and it said "1%". I removed the charger and put it back in, so that I get the usual PC/just-charge choice, and I clicked "Just charge". By that time, the charge status said "2%".

(From reading forum posts, I understand that when people usually connect the power charger (not USB), the phone does not ask them the PC/just-charge question. However, my phone always asks.)

I am leaving the phone without touching it and it is charging, as indicated by the blue LED and status that now reports "3%" (and it has gone up to "7%" by this time).

I couldn't say whether my test without the battery has helped. Another explanation could be that maybe the phone was very slowly charging even while it was cycling through states and LEDs as explained in my original question. (Maybe it was charging for 2 seconds in every cycle, while that blue LED was active as I described.)

In any case, it's working again now. Hope it helps anyone in similar situation.

Same problem here, with v1.1.1.27 Vaarainjärvi. What solved it for me is simply this: 1) Remove battery 2) Plug in USB charger cable 3) Insert battery 4) Wait. The charge in percent (1%) was displayed within less than a minute. After a while I pressed the power button and the phone started to boot.

4 years later, I find the above comment extremely useful!, thanks @StaticNoiseLog

I dug out my spare batteries (Jolla and other brands) and realised they are all as flat as pancakes and was presented with the blinking red led.........10 minutes in, both devices are now charging the batteries.
