[bug] image smaller cannot be scaled in avatar dialog

Steps to reproduce:

1. select a contact and attempt to assign an avatar to it with [+]
2. pick an image of a size smaller or bigger then default avatar size

Expected result:

Image is zoomed and is pinch scalable in avatar dialog to adjust cropping and sizing

Actual result:

The avatar dialog shows up with image zoomed in, but at first attempt of interacting with the image it is zoomed out and does not react to any user action but accepting. Same problem is visible in Gallery app when editing image via crop action.

Illustrative example

1) Click the 'plus' sign in the contact card, select an image from the gallery.

The big 'Crop' label is obviously intended for cropping the image... oh wait, it isn't. Never mind.

2) Try your luck and just touch the screen with two fingers, trying to zoom the photo in/out.

Surprise, the screen suddenly becomes almost completely unresponsive. No matter what gestures you perform on the photo, it will remain stuck in the top left corner. The only thing you can do is a single tap, which toggles the cropping mode.

3) Spend several confused seconds to understand that the 'Avatar' and 'Aspect ratio' labels don't do much more than the aforementioned 'Crop' label.

4) Give up and swipe left (or click 'Accept'). Cry.

In case you wonder, the photo is shown exactly as distorted during incoming call from this contact.

I struggle with this bug(s) since March 2014 and still did not find any way to properly add a photo to a contact.

To be honest, it's kinda depressing that such basic functionality remains broken for years.
