Please don't remove top-swipe action close from in app, this should stay at least optional. The new ambience-pull-down is nice but please do not replace the close gesture with it, if it has to be there, please find a way to have both instead of sacrificing gestures for all new UI features.

And locking phone should stay a gesture too, not pull-down+tap.

I really like the new way of doing it. Only thing I dislike is sacrificing app closing by swiping down for it

We need a separate close gesture different from swipe from top. It was a mistake in the first place to have one gesture do two things.

@ApB two things, we started off with "close" only (I consider locking the phone also a "close" gesture) - that was set to "minimize" apps then and lock the phone separating in two different actions. @Morpog yeah I like the ambience-switcher being moved there and the "silence" too but one thing still bothers, if I flick it down will my phone lock or do I need to tap something? If I do need to tap something total fail!

At least i hope we can configure it in order to have it only lock the screen. If we need to swipe and tap to lock is a step back.

Just answer to two questions:

What do you do more often - change the ambiance or close the application?
Which one should be easier accessible?

I like the top menu with ambiances and lock button but I guess it should be only available on the main screen, not on the application layer.

definitely close app and additionally I want to lock the device by a gesture, so ambience could e.g. be a two-finger swipe or instead stay where it is now (swipe to side on home screen).

It seems that the Jolla team has this issue on their radar. After having read the following text in the official Jolla blog I am confident that Sailfish 2.0 will still offer a convenient way to close apps.

If you continue to read, you will see that it's already designed to be configurable: However when you advance you are able to unlock handy tricks, e.g. closing an app via a top edge swipe or direct access to Events from anywhere in the UI.

I think a good way of implementing both the Lock function and the app closing function via gestures would be if both the lock and the close commands had their own space like the ambience ones. The first swipe-down field can be the "app-close" command for instance, the second one the "device lock" command, and you activate them by moving the finger from the top to the perticular field and releasing it on the proposed field. It certainly would mean that you have to internalise when you need to lift your finger off the screen in order to access certain commands, but i think you can get used to these moves after some time.

To prohibit these basic top-down functions from mixing up with the not-that-often-used ambience-changer you maybe can change the pulldown-triggering in a way, so that the different ambiences open up after a certain point on the screen by dragging the finger down. Or maybevia a fast flick down the whole screen.

But then again i don't know if this method would be valued as too unsteady and difficult for Newcomers to learn.. Anyway i would love to see the swipe-down functions of sailfish 1.x in Sailfish 2.0! :)

I remember us users arguing for a very long time that swipe down to close should be an option on the N9, and Nokia being initially reluctant to do so. And then they agreed to put it in, and everyone agreed what a great idea it really was, and should have been there from the beginning. SO when the Jolla had it from the start I was happy. Now I'm less happy.

It is unfortunate that, for me, Jolla seem to be moving away from their original aspirations, I guess it makes sense for them as a business - but if they are going to start looking more like the mainstream I might as well look to my next phone being something that is mainstream

i think this is too complicated. why not ambiences instead of partner space. this would solve those problems. i prefer the n8/android pull down menu over ambience switcher, but this is exact the global eventsview with the settings inside, so what i think is to stick to both, global events by swipe up, close/ lock by swipe down. this improoves usage (time) so much

As i understand, this is still a possibillity. maybe the pulley menu implemention was just not ready for MWC... So to still have the convenient and simply close swipe it would only be necessary to make the close item the last one to pull out/down. It would be activated if you draw further or just flick. All problems of this Thread would be solved imho. Same operation as we are used to, plus more options if you do not pull all the way down.

Suggestion: Let ambiences be "apps". That way the ambiences can be located together with the apps/floders on app drawer, so no need for swipe from top to change ambience. Instead swipe from top can be used for closing app/locking device.

That ambience view should be shown in the event view instead. Keep our beloved swiping down to down app and lock screen

You can close with a swipe from the top in Sailfish 2.0 as well so I'm closing this. The other request to not require an additional tap to lock the screen is not reflected in the title so I'm ignoring it. Honestly, it's just as much work to swipe from the top inside an app and tap to lock the screen like it is now in Sailfish 2.0, than to swipe from the top or side of an app and then again from the top to lock the screen, as it was in earlier Sailfish. There's no real reason to close apps anyway (the OOM killer does it for you!)

can you give a rundown of what changed in SFOS2 gesture wise? Also i saw a settings screenshot that had gestures as a selection. what does it include?

@ApB: Swipe down from the top anywhere (except in the list of apps) to get the list of favourite ambiences, with a lock icon at the top, tapping that icon locks the screen. The gestures you can currently configure are 'quick app close' (closing with a swipe from the top, as it used to be, of course if you enable this then you will need to swipe twice from the top and then another tap to lock the screen) and 'quick events access', which when enabled lets you access the Events screen from absolutely anywhere with a swipe from the left. (swipe from right still goes straight to the home screen)

You can check it out yourself by setting your Sailfish version to 1.1.9.27 and doing a version --dup. This is probably the version you'll get later anyway as I haven't encountered any bugs. It's worth it!

Regarding the closing, I disagree - you're not closing just the title, but the post as well, so its contents are relevant. It it much more hassle to lock the screen in 1.1.9.x, so this question should stay open until it is resolved.

@nodevel: then the post might as well have 2000 other bugs or feature requests and you could only close it once they were all solved/implemented. One issue per post, or at least all issues in the title of the post. Otherwise there is nothing but a giant mess.

@nthn So you can lock the screen from inside an app without closing or swiping away the app first? Well, this is something I missed a lot and its addition is worth the extra tap to lock.

errrr.......how about tap and hold on the active cover of the app and then flick it any direction and away? ok if you don't want it to conflict with the left / right swipe then perhaps just flick it to the top or bottom?
