I have downloaded the version in the link and apart from the app hanging occassionally, it works! There is the expectation of more features and bug fixes but this app works well for now and meets all the basic expectations from a whatsapp client.

I am not the developer of the app, but I though we can start a thread here wherein sailors that install whatsup can share their experience and we can collectively keep track of updates, etc.

UPDATE

If you are still using the native version of WhatsApp from OpenRepos (Whatsup), please note that the developer of the app has been contacted by WhatsApp lawyers and the development of the app will most probably stop. So using the native version might not be the best idea, unfortunately.

Logically yes, but that post also has other points of discussion (will a native app be available, we should use telegram, viber, etc). I thought if there is one dedicated to whatsup, topic will be focused.

Agree with @Aashish , this new app deserves a completely separate thread. Added to that there are many people waiting for the native app.

As an alternative to the questionable WhatsApp we have a version of TextSecure on Harbour now! "TextSecure Jolla Version" is a patched fork of the original TextSecure which doesn't rely on any Google services and which might be merged with the original in the future. Sadly not native yet.... Check out Harbour and JavaJens Github page for more info...

So maybe it is time for a change, to be unlike...

I didn't find it too difficult to get some friends to use TextSecure, but of course the userbase can be a downside for you. But after all it just takes very few steps to get TextSecure running on Android or iOS (app is named Signals for some reason) and nobody has to uninstall Whatsapp immedeately. I hope there will be a constant flow of users from Whatsapp to TextSecure, Zuckerberg probably will support this with advertisement and whatnot ;) As a Jolla user I guess you care about things like privacy and security and are willing help getting the idea spread.

Just a friendly suggestion...

Furthermore it might be worthwile for the developers of the native whatsapp app for Jolla to consider working on a native TextSecure app instead. Their experence would certainly be usefull and the risk of getting shut down by some lawyers reduced. Just my thoughts on this...

TextSecure is still a centralized service, and controlled by one (commercial) party. Isn't this ordeal with whatsapp yet again a very clear indicator that that's something to be avoided?

There are plenty of free Jabber services available, which inter operate perfectly. Or you can run your own server.

TextSecure is free and opensource software! Certainly not commercial....

A decentralized structure would be perfect I assume but I didn't find a usable secure app that incorporates it yet. Tox seems to be a candidate, but has some problems still as far as I know. Please correct me uf I am wrong.

Usability is an extremely important factor for secure communication, a secure app is worth nothing if the average user can't get it working.

I haven't seen any reasonable concerns about TextSecures security. And it's absolutely straightforward to use.

Sad news, it's a good app. Hopefully WhatsApp will wake up and see a demand for native SailfishOS app in the near future. The least we could do as a community is to bombard them with an app request for SFOS.

Anyhow. I keep using whatsup until maybee mitakuluu will reach a level of usability as is given by whatsup. And hopefully someday there's a native app for textsecure and i can get over that dark period in my life.

If WhatsApp recognises whatsup enough to send a formal notice, they might be actively monitoring ways to identify users on whatsup. Unfortunately this means that a ban is highly possible. I would recommend staying off whatsup

But remember Mitakuluu was one banned. You can't expect Whatsapp to go after that too.

Yes there are, but we should not bring jolla in a bad situation so I will not post a link here and I am asking everybody to do this not also.

The links are down again, right? I tried to download Beta3 but only got error 404 from dropbox. Beta1 and Beta2 are the same for me. Any hints?

EDIT: I asked in the developer thread on TMO and found out that a new version will be out on OpenRepos "very soon".

just downloaded whatsup because android whatsapp stopped working. I noticed that standard status in whatsup is "hi there, i'm using whatsup...". Best to change that immediately, Maybe whatsapp monitors statusses and usage of not allowed messengers is easily detected by status (I think my status gave away my mitakuuluu usage ("hi there, I'm using mitakuuluu...")..... i got banned ;(
