Bug: Some mp3/mp4 music files do not play

Some mp3/mp4 files do not play in the Jolla music app. The artist gets displayed, but the list of songs is empty.

Any file created by downloading a .mp4 youtube video using video downloadhelper plug-in and then saving the audio track in a separate file using the program "SimpleMovieX" on a mac does not seem to play. These are not the only ones, but a way to re-create the situation. Playing the source video with Jolla's video player plays the movie (both audio and video) just fine.

The files which do not play in Jolla seem to be same files that don't play in Banshee (a music player in Linux) without the gstreamer-0.10-ffmpeg -library installed. After installing that library, Banshee plays those files fine. I noticed Jolla seems to have library "gstreamer-0.10-ffmpeg-0.10.13-10.1.2.jolla.armv7h1" installed.

Another possible clue: It may have something to do with file's metadata, as re-encoding the file using iTunes (neither to mp3 or aac) does not make the file playable in Jolla. The files I have tried had metadata added in iTunes and took one or two seconds to save the metadata to the file. Adding metadata to other music files happens almost instantly.

Could Jolla please fix this bug and is there some workaround available in the mean time? I would not like to re-encode and manually transfer metadata for such music files.

I purchased today music from 7digital in mp4 format. While it is playing on Kubuntu, it does not on Jolla.

mp4 is a video container... with whatever codec used... but well yeah Jolla should support all known codecs!

I had transferred my ringtone, SMS and e-mail alerts from the N9 to Jolla and they would not play. The files were MP3 32 kbit/s 22 kHz mono. They could not be set as ringtone and Media would not play them. I then converted them to 128 kbit/s 44.1 kHz stereo MP3s and now they play just fine. I would consider this a bug and would love it to be fixed that any MP3 file can be played.

Well... my point was that the Jolla does not play certain kinds of MP3 files at all and that could be linked to them also not being indexed. But yes, I think I should open a seperate bug entry about the playback issues.

This works for me: Open Media app, go to 'Artists', select your artist and in the 'Albums' view, use the pulley menu to 'show all titles'. It jumps to the song view where suddenly all the songs are there. So you better only have one album per artist;-) Just buggie I guess. NOTE: I've also not been able to find out why it shows only one arbitrary title (of 30, same album, same metadata apart from the title) in my case. Also, my menu is German so there might be small differences in the English designations.

Thank you folks! This indeed seems to fix the problem. It wasn't about the files not being playable by Jolla, but simply not being recognized due to expected metadata being missing. Note: There are some albums without tag "compilation artist" which I still cannot access.

I seem to be able to access those albums without the "compilation artist" tag by adding that tag and re-transferring the file to Jolla. Those albums show up in the "album by artist" -view and do not show any songs in Jolla otherwise, even when using the pulley menu to "show all titles"

Maybe you meant the same I do, but I just wanna make it clear. The Problem exists for every song that has no Album meta tag filled. You can have as many Albums as you want of one Artist. This bug hits me really hard too, because I have many Songs that have a filled Artist but no Album.

And yes the pulley menu always helps :)

Please don't mark a correct answer in a Topic with real bad behaviour or bug. Maybe this behaviour was intended. But the Songs should be grouped in "unknown Album"

This design problem still exists and seems easy to fix. It really eats so much time for every extra pull you need to listen to the song you like at the moment.

The Jolla did not play some of my mp3 files. I realized that this affected the files with the extension .MP3 (uppercase letters). I rename Them ".mp3" and that did the trick!

Additional observation regarding "some mp3s not playing", not music related. If you try to play very short mp3s, it seems to fail with files shorter than ~1.1sec.

Stumbled over this while helping to debug Nightly Clock by Paul Wallace, who intended to play a tick sound every second. costed me an evening of thought to realize and test that short mp3s below 1sec are not played by gstreamer for some reason. It starts to work above sample length of 1.1sec.

Anyone tried samples below 1 sec successfuly to falsify this thought?
