First of all, the Swedish translation of Load=Ladda is a huge misstake and a fatal missunderstanding, probably made by som translator, that didn't know much about IT and computers, a long time ago. After that, people have just followed without giving it much thought. In IT/computer context, the direct translation should be Load=Lasta. Just take a look at the Norwegian translation of Load=Laste... they got it right. There is also some related Swedish translations at server side, e.g. Load balancing=Lastbalansering, Server load=Serverlast.

As Swedish is a quite complexed language, the direct translation of Reload isn't very suitable for this Sailfish Utilities button, and I would therefore suggest that you change the button text to Bygg om mediadatabasen. That way it will also match the app register button as well as being correct Swedish. Otherwise Uppdatera mediadatabasen should be okay to.

Please, also notice the app register button typo. It should be Bygg om appregistret

If by load you mean have much the cpu load last is correct.

while loading a orogram.. then ladda would be correct.

Anyhow, important for the ordinary guy that it is intelligible.

In the example in the fig ladda is correctly used.

No, it is not. There are several correct translations but none of them contain the word "Ladda". Most correct Swedish translations would be to long (e.g. "Läs in mediadatabasen på nytt"), so I maintain that the most appropriate correct translation would be "Bygg om mediadatabasen".

Since the descriptive text suggests that the database might be "broken" or at least non-complete, Uppdatera databasen, would be a nice text, and would also problably fit very well. And regarding Ladda vs Lasta, my vote goes to Ladda. I can't see why Lasta should be used. Further, I would say that Server load == serverBElastning , in that sence you wouldn't "belasta" the media database, instead you want to reload, or "re-read", and then Ladda is more fit than Lasta - IMO.

I did not say you should actually use the word "Lasta", nor would it be a very good Swedish translation for the English expression Load. What I meant was that "Lasta" is the original English meaning of Load in this context.

The problem is that Load has more than one meaning in English. In Swedish it is more complex, we have several words to choose from, in order to distinguish the different meanings. In Swedish you can "ladda" a gun, or a nuclear reactor, but you can not "ladda" data. In correct Swedish, data is something you read or "läser in".

Edit:

"Ladda ner/Ladda upp" is another example of the misunderstanding I wrote about in the first post. Now I have no hope of being able to change this misunderstanding, it is so often used that it has become a standard. I will simply have to see it as a striking example of how a wrongly used word, all of a sudden can become law if it is repeated often enough.

Yes, we agree on Load goes both into Ladda and Lasta in Swedish, and those two have different meanings and gives some context that the English word misses. I also agree with you that you read data. But it is the database that is filled/loaded , or "laddad" with data (that is read). The database is equivalent to the gun, while data is the bullet that goes into the empty slot (load) in the gun. So the databases is loaded (laddad) with data that is read (läst in), and you can re-read the data to reload (ladda om) the database. Further, just because you read data, it does not automatically mean that you fill/load a database with it. With that said, I don't find Ladda om databasen, to be wrong, but there are better translations available, such as Uppdatera or Bygg om.

Respons to edit: Well why would ladda ner /ladda upp be wrong and lasta be correct? Eventhough they have differents meanings they are closely related, and the difference is where/what is the actual load (last). Go back to the weapons comparision, Load the cannon - it can be equally correct translated into both Ladda kanonen or Lasta kanonen. The first is reload with new balls/ammunition, the other is to load the cannon on a ship or a truck. So difference is if you put something INTO the cannon (ie ladda), or if the cannon itself IS the load (lasta).

So if you see the browser/database as the cannon and the data as the ammunition that you fill into cannon, then ladda ner is perfectly good.

And further, languages are a living thing, words and expressions do change over time. Just because it was not right long time ago, does not mean it is wrong today.

Well, then we will just have to disagree on "Ladda", but I'm glad you can see the better translation of the current button text.

Thank you for your comments! The typo is now corrected and the button text is now "Bygg om mediadatabasen". They should be released in the next translation update release.
