My Xperia X USB data port died (Physical problem, metal from connector got scraped after many cable insertions).

The device still beeing under warranty, I sent it back, with information on how to check if repair was working on sailfishOs (easy :) . The Sony Repair Center in France (Cordon Electronics - Amazon) sent me the phone back without any repairs done.

Irréparable: tentative de modification de logiciel du mobile. Conformément aux conditions de votre garantie constructeur, votre produit n'est plus couvert par la garantie[...]

(Irreparable: attempt to modify mobile software. In accordance with the terms of your manufacturer's warranty, your product is no longer covered by the warranty).

No way to put android back (no TA save, and no more USB data)

I've seen in together.jolla that hardware warranty was still valid in Finland. I'm very interested by feedback from other sailors about warranty, in France or in other countries.

EDIT: I've just phoned Sony Support and they say that rooting your phone voids the warranty :-(

I'm having an issue with my Xperia X's upper microphone. Contacted firstly Verkkokauppa.com where I bought the phone and they said to contact directly Mobylife which services these phones. From Mobylife they said that because of the modifications done to the phone, they can't repair the phone under the warranty. According to them it was Sony's statement. And yes btw I'm living in Finland.

I'm still confused about this because somehow I've got this feeling that under the EU's law, the phone should be repaired under the warranty repair, if they can't clearly point out that the faulty is due to the modification done on the device. I'll try to contact Sony directly, see if it helps.

Any tips?

@Sakke Yeah, I'm pretty sure that I've also read somewhere that they can't deny warranty repairs due to rooting in the EU. They can still try to mislead you, but IMHO don't have any actual legal standing.

The following articles seem to agree with this interpretation:

https://www.xda-developers.com/xda-external-link/rooting-cannot-legally-void-your-warranty/

https://www.piana.eu/root/

https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/130gie/fsfe_legal_advice_in_europe_rooting_and_flashing/

Also, if you have made a backup of the TA partition, it should be possible to completely roll back any changes in device software state. This might unfortunately be the easier option than actually making use of own legal rights in this case...

I've just phoned Sony Support France and they say that rooting your phone voids the warranty :-(, even for usb port (which is not on the motherboard by the way).

About the legal situation: the mandatory warranty is 1 year in France (maybe Europe?). I'm in the 2 years Sony warranty, and I suppose that only Sony own conditions apply here.

I suppose I'll have to change the USB port myself. (7$ at witrigs ). I've had a look for microphones (upper microphone bt the way ??), but did not see any spare for it.

Edit: @MartinK: very useful information in your links (thanks). I'll give it a try.

Fixing the usb charger port is not that difficult, it's more difficult opening the case tho. I did send mine to sony repair before flashing it with SFOS but I am not impressed with their service as they have not assembled it back properly.

On the Sony webpage: https://developer.sony.com/develop/open-devices/get-started/supported-devices-and-functionality/current-platform-functionality-maintained/ select Xperia X, to see the differences between stock Android with DRM keys (the first column) and the rest without DRM keys. lolek (Jun 19 '18)

https://www.xda-developers.com/restore-lost-functionality-on-your-unlocked-xperia-device-part-two

After flash back to andy to get some functionallety back if u don't have that backup of TA or DRM

Maybe usefull for some who forgot that part and want to go back/reflash.

What they are doing is patently illegal. Time to send a nastygram or get Amazon involved.

@MartinK has more links in his comment, but for instance from http://matija.suklje.name/rooting-and-flashing-your-device-does-not-void-the-warranty-in-eu

Does rooting your device (e.g. an Android phone) and replacing its operating system with something else void your statutory warranty, if you are a consumer?

In short: No.

Just the fact that you modified or changed the software of your device, is not a sufficient reason to void your statutory warranty. As long as you have bought the device as a consumer in the European Union.

A bit longer:

Directive 1999/44/CE dictates 1 that any object meeting certain criteria (incl. telephones, computers, routers etc.) that is sold to a consumer 2 inside the European Union, has to carry a warranty from the seller that the device will meet the quality that you would expect for such a device for a period of 2 years. [...]

Also, note that Sony is not legally responsible for your EU statutory 2-year warranty. The shop which sold you the phone is. They are the ones that you have to convince.

To emphasize: the last paragraph is the important part. The shop where you bought the device is responsible for warranty. They may suggest contacting the manufacturer directly, which often indeed is faster and easier, but in the end the seller is responsible. Warranty is your right, don't let them tell you otherwise. The seller must handle warranty claims. (this is EU specific.)

This has been discussed here before and results were way better. For example here https://together.jolla.com/question/178809/experience-with-sony-warranty/

According to this, HARDWARE WARRANTY EXISTS possibly excluding the mother board.
