Duplicate tracks in music player

One album (in mp3 format) that I have on the phone shows all the tracks twice in the album's track list. The first version of the track has correct length, but does not play - or rather, "plays", but nothing is heard. The second version of the track works.

There is nothing else in the directory that contains the tracks. Other albums, both in mp3 and m4a format, work fine.

Apparently restarting the phone (probably triggering re-indexing actions in the media tracker?) removes the duplicates.

I had problems with the album prior to the duplication - the tracks did not show up because the directory had an apostrophe in its name (see question 37251) and the duplicates appeared when I removed the apostrophe from the directory name.

I'm able to reproduce the bug.

I had a folder ~/Music/folder1/ with mp3 files. I created a new folder folder2 and moved the first folder to ~/Music/folder2/folder1/. Now Media app did show all audio files twice. One is not playable but the other.

The same happens if you rename folder1 and/or folder2.

I have files containing German Umlauts. If I try to play an incorrect duplicate with umlaut than Media app chrashes. Files without umlaut are highlighted but do not start playing and the app is not chrashing.

Rebooting the device or running e.g. tracker-control -f ~/Music/ cleans up the incorrect duplicates.
