Isn't the first stretch goal, "MicroSDHC support up to 128GB", just a licencing issue just to be able to legaly use exFat? Wasn't the second stretch goal, "Split Screen", already planed? The last one, "Cellular data for $30", is the only one that's actually an hardware feature, which you've added because you're not really expecting to reach $2,500,000... someone probably thought "well if we reach this we might as well change something"? Anyway wouldn't a 4G modem make more sense in 2015?

Discuss ;)

timing and magnitude of contributions

The current funding is at 1.25M$ (MEGADOLLARS), and we're at about half the length of the funding period, so according to that graph (timing and magnitude of crowdfunding contributions) it's unlikely to reach the 2.5M$ goal.

It should already be possible to use a 128GB microSD card anyway, as long as it's formatted to FAT32. At least I would be very surprised that my almost 6 year old Sansa Clip+ can handle a 128GB microSD and this new tablet wouldn't.

I would contribute but ONLY if 2.5M strech goal will be reached. A tablet without 3G/4G is worthless to me. Somehow this should be possible with indiegogo...

I am especially doubtful about the second goal which seems to be pure software. Does that mean that without reaching the goal, we cannot see that feature coming? Or is it just to have it when the tablet is delivered and not in a 'soon' future?

I'd guess 50% will upgrade to LTE if available, add an earpiece and you have a 8" phone. so 50% is currently another 100k if you charge $50 for LTE... I highly doubt that manufacturing + field-test is 100k so they already make money with it, as they already have a phone OS I doubt that there is much to do software wise apart of adding some new settings and drivers. I'd love to have a second SIM in my tab and have it capable to make phone-calls too but on the other hand, why not have that properly integrated with the Jolla we already have (seamless sync and control between the two devices would make a nice stretch goal).

I don't like any stretch goals which involve paying patent protection money to MS. It's very not nice to take crowdfunded money in that direction. If Jolla want better filesystem support, let them invest into developing F2FS, that should be a stretch goal.

And in general, I think there should be some transparency about patent situation in Jolla. Does Jolla already pay for anything? (I guess they should be paying to MPEG-LA for H.264 at least). Did anyone threaten them? Since community plans to support Jolla, it should be clear how that money are used.

And split screen? I'd rather see browser taken care of. It's quite a long time since initial release and UI still doesn't support Mozilla Sync and mobile Firefox add-ons.

Well, yes -- licensing exFat is just a question of money, not hardware. And yes, a split-screen feature should only require software work, so again, just a question of time and money. Then again, the entire point of this campaign is to _raise money_, isn't it? So these are perfect stretch goals, in my opinion.

I have my own pet hardware request which I would absolutely love to see implemented, but I do realize that Jolla is really not a hardware company, and that this is their first attempt at a tablet. I have to say that I would prefer to see a high-quality minimalist device over one with lots of buggy hardware features that were thrown in without sufficient engineering work. :)

Well, I understand my problem is stretch feature 1 is actually an anti-feature for me. Money spent on royalties tat could be better spent on improved functionality. If you want to license something , go with, say, offline maps.

It is not that you cannot actually use the card... Jolla cannot advertise compatibility, but as long as the cards do actually work, who cares?

The only advantage to paying the royalties would be you could put a sticker on the box saying SDXC cards are supported.

The problem with the split screen goal is this: I have a feeling that this goal will/would be implemented by staff that's working on SW features for SailfishOS anyway, as opposed to people being hired to implement this particular feature. I'd really like to see the split screen feature on the tablet, but if it is at the cost of other features I don't consider it a suitable stretch goal.

@mikelima That's a good point! What about just adding an option to format the card to say EXT4 and be done with it ? As others have pointed out, most people don't swap the uSD cards so often so the need for compatibility with other (exFAT using) devices might not be that high. Still there could be some issues with marketing & official standard compatibility - even if the given braindead "standard" requires you to support a proprietary filesystem in this day and age...

@Copernicus I'd also like to have a (preferably two way) infra port in the tablet - so voted for and followed your question. :)

@mikelima: Well, yes, throwing money at exFat doesn't really improve functionality, since you could get the same ability by simply using one of the open formatting systems. However, what it does provide is compatibility; I do like the idea that I can go to a relative's house and just pop the uSD card into one of their devices to show off my pictures and videos (or pop one of their uSD cards into my own device). So there is some benefit to it. (And hey, much better to get the money for a goal like this from a funding campaign rather than from the company's own seed cash...)

@tokaru: Yes, it does sound like the split-screen feature was being worked on already. But much better for it to be paid for out of this campaign, and use the money saved thereby for other projects... :)

Copernicus ( 2014-11-27 18:29:26 +0200 )edit

@MartinK: It would be lovely to have an actual IrDA port to play with. :) But even just a CIR receiver would be nice to have; as the N900 only has the transmitter, I've been limited in just how much I can do with my remote control app...

Battery is too small and many people are commenting on it. Replace one of these stretch goals (#1 or #2) with adding a WYSIPS panel to the display so it constantly charges the battery. http://sunpartnertechnologies.com/ This does not require extensive rearranging of the inside of the device to make room for a bigger battery. The opened a office in China where your manufacturer most likely is so just make it happen.

Sounds kind of cool, according to the article it can also be used for LiFi and would cost about €2 per device.

What do you do with your tablet all the time? Lay it on a surface in front of a light.

That would be great! Really like the idea...

Probably I would not use the tablet for hours continuously. Instead I will have it neaby for days and weeks. Not worrying about battery capacity would be a killer feature.

So just for my own amusement I started thinking about how many tablets are needed to be sold per hour for the duration of campaign to meet the new stretch goals. There are currently ~300 hours left of the campaign and there are an additional 1,210,000$ needed to reach Goal #3. Given a fairly unscientific assumption that sales are linear, there needs to be ~4000$ worth of sales each hour. That's about 18 tables at 229$.

The milestones to reach Goal #3 each day are: (at the end of day Pacific Time GMT -8).

27-Nov 1.33M$
28-Nov 1.43M$
29-Nov 1.53M$ Goal #1
30-Nov 1.62M$
01-Dec 1.72M$
02-Dec 1.82M$ Goal #2
03-Dec 1.92M$
04-Dec 2.02M$
05-Dec 2.11M$
06-Dec 2.21M$
07-Dec 2.31M$
08-Dec 2.41M$
09-Dec 2.50M$

Without major new incentives, I doubt it beats $1.8-1.9m, and that's being optimistic.

you forgot the people that already pledged and now raise by 30$ in the hope that 2.5 mil. will be reached ;)

When you reach 3,02M$ you can have a startup animation showing Carol wink. After 3,65M$ speach notifications with Marc´s voice. (including HERE map directions)

Man the 3,65M$ goal whould be somehow nice! ;)

I like these goals. They are a bit too centered on core supporters, but they are fun. HAving some whimsical "free" stretch goals for the 2M$ target could be useful.

Consider these additional goals

Goal 2Millions -- help coderus, nieldk, cepiperez and marxian develop for sailfish. Goal 2.25Milions -- partnership with Microsoft/Facebook to bring Skype/Whatsapp to sailfish for us to do video calling Goal 2.5Millions -- bigger and removable battery(slot in) for additional 30$

How about, hire coderus, nieldk, cepiperez and marxian?

Goal 2.25M should be "Swear to never have a partnership with Microsoft and/or Facebook, ever!"

Bigger battery? Why are you people requesting larger batteries, Jolla is already better in battery-time than all the others just because they have a better OS.

chemist ( 2014-11-28 11:14:46 +0200 )edit

sure @chemist, you know, we know, thats why we already pledged. But the (casual?) people who are now required to invest the remaining 1,2 million might not. It would have been really cool to offer 3g+ and ~2000mah+ for 30$ each, so both for 60$ when reaching 2.5mil... Now i raised by 30$ with only little hope that these will be more than a sponsorship... no problem, thats the game. but it would have been easier to reach the new goals, giving more options for still completely uncertain potential buyers/pledgers.
