unresponsive user interface (various lags and jerks)

There are multiple places in the main UI where things are just not smooth.

  • when you move from the homescreen (multitasking view) to the lockscreen (clock, date, network), there is a very noticeable “jerk” or discontinuity after a fraction of second... FPS display shows a huge spike ; the problem doesn't happen when going back to homescreen
  • when app covers are rearranged on the homescreen (due to tapping on an app that's not in the top-left corner), the animation gets stuck for a short while in the middle
  • peeking from an app at the homescreen, or from notifications to the homescreen: the crossover animation is interrupted in the middle

These are probably software issues, where the rendering thread becomes blocked. I have tried using an interactive CPU frequency governor (as per @Manatus) and the performance GPU powerscaling governor: this does not make any difference.

This is all with update 9, but it is not related to memory pressure (all of this happens with no or very few light apps open, depending on the scenario).

UPDATE: No change with update 10. Are others seeing the issues described above? Should I try a factory reset?

What device are you using?

If you have cpufrequtils installed, you can smoothen things out a bit by setting the cpu governor to interactive with cpufreq-set -g interactiveas devel-su. It probably just masks the original problem, though.

@proyb2 the jolla phone, why? @Manatus I can try, but I suspect this won't fix the problem -- it doesn't feel like a CPU/GPU bottleneck, more like the code doing something that blocks the drawing thread for (noticeable) moment

I have a little jerk/lag too, but for me it is when I scroll down from the home screen to the app drawer. This is with no apps running and a single page of app icons (including three folders containing between 3 and 6 apps each).

Well, for me, it's even worse, the phone sometimes hangs for 3 to 5 seconds. Especially when I have the virtual keyboard open and I'm typing text, then I don't get any response for the phones for several seconds and then the text I typed appears at once. Very annoying...

Clean up your notifications

Again, this is not a RAM issue. I also have 7G free on btrfs (6.23GB used according to btrfs fi show). No active notifications.

@mornfall : Those are all tweaks that could help with lag (first one is not exactly about RAM either). And with cleaning up notifications I meant clean up the whole thing (from the drop down menu)

Clean up what notifications exactly? It says “no notifications”, I don't think it can get any cleaner than that. Tweaking swappiness or dirty writeback is not going to do anything. Those problems happen with a freshly booted phone, 0 swap use and 340M of buffer/cache RAM (which is essentially free for the system). Scrolling to the lockscreen and back doesn't change the RAM use.
