Easy way to download whole country map data (Openstreetmap)?

I already found discussions about downloadable map data - but mostly only tiles etc. - or with the discussion about what kind of map - but not including a answer to my quite simple question:

Is there a simple way (/App ) to download map data for a whole country??

Like on my old Noka where I could simply use the Maps app - and there was a list of countrys available that could be downloaded with one click each - the same with updates.

My number one choice for an open Mobile like Jolla would of course be openstreemap (even better would also be an option to make corrections/mark changes to the map data if i find some)

Being able to download "map data" for a whole country basically implies vector map data (as tiled map images for a country would be unreasonably big) which implies a vector map rendering. And because just showing tile images on the screen is much easier than rendering the map on screen from the vector data, all currently available native mapping/navigation apps use tiled map images.

This might hopefully change in the near future thanks to the Merkator offline rendering & routing daemon that is being developed by Basil Semuonov (the creator of OpenRepos and Warehouse). That should make large area data download and offline usage available both directly and in compatible applications. So far the author of Poor Maps and the author of modRana (me) have promised to start supporting the Merkator daemon once it becomes available.

@MartinK you raise a very important point for future discussion , I would like to see a fresh thread on it at Together. I understand the forum is at TMO which where modrana has born but the users of Jolla are here, how about a discussion here ?

Strange that no one answered , you can still do that in the android application OSMAnd . But OSMAnd offers states and regions for download if the states are too big. So you need to download them one by one and not run out of space.

Next important advice is that you should download the OSMAnd from F-Droid repository so that you get a Full version for free . If you want you can always donate them some money .

Another option would be „Navit“ which is also available from F-Droid.

If you can tolerate android apps, then why not just install Here Beta (i.e. good old Nokia Maps)? Works like a charm, and you can download all the maps you like. AND it's free (at least for the time being). Navigation and all.

There is no native solution to display offline vector maps on SailfishOS, but there are lots of Android applications which can do the trick.

The last of best offline OSM data viewers which is not mentioned yet is MAPS.ME. It is proprietary software open source since 2015-09-30. MAPS.ME has much fewer functions than OsmAnd, but it is famous for it's fluent and simple UI. Price is zero.

If none of OsmAnd / Navit / MAPS.ME fits you, you may check comprehensive list of Android OSM compatible software.

As I stated in other posts, Navit is highly portable and has already an beta QML interface and an Maemo port. So if you like to start porting to sailfish OS and on general development, your help is highly appreciated :-) They are a small, but very nice team.
