Easy way to download whole country map data (Openstreetmap)?

I already found discussions about downloadable map data - but mostly only tiles etc. - or with the discussion about what kind of map - but not including a answer to my quite simple question:
Is there a simple way (/App ) to download map data for a whole country??
Like on my old Noka where I could simply use the Maps app - and there was a list of countrys available that could be downloaded with one click each - the same with updates.
My number one choice for an open Mobile like Jolla would of course be openstreemap (even better would also be an option to make corrections/mark changes to the map data if i find some)
Being able to download "map data" for a whole country basically implies vector map data (as tiled map images for a country would be unreasonably big) which implies a vector map rendering. And because just showing tile images on the screen is much easier than rendering the map on screen from the vector data, all currently available native mapping/navigation apps use tiled map images.
This might hopefully change in the near future thanks to the Merkator offline rendering & routing daemon that is being developed by Basil Semuonov (the creator of OpenRepos and Warehouse). That should make large area data download and offline usage available both directly and in compatible applications. So far the author of Poor Maps and the author of modRana (me) have promised to start supporting the Merkator daemon once it becomes available.
