I'll be interviewing some sailors at MWC event (March 2-5, 2015), and love to DoItTogether - So if you have any questions in mind you'd like me to ask directly from them, add those below, or use this anonymous form (add "TJC" to get answered here)

I hope you post nice and relevant q's, and I hope to meet the best sailor to answer those :) Please try to avoid any questions already asked on TJC

Good and relevant questions might not get answered, bad and irrelevant might not get asked at all

ps. if there are other TJC members interviewing at MWC, please check in, let's DIT to share the effort

Hi simo, thanks for keeping us up to date. Are you planning on publishing the complete interview somewhere?

There's all together 7-8 video interviews and 3-5 video reviews coming up, so far only 2 of these are published at Review Jolla (blog / YouTube). I'm having some busy times, but I hope to get these all edited in some reasonable schedule. Thanks for asking ;)

when do you expect to launch Jolla2 and will you keep the dimensions the same for Other Half compatibility?

EDIT: Not a direct answer, but just a guess from reading between the lines (so this is just my personal opinion): We'll see another Sailfish OS phone, manufactured either by Jolla or a 3rd party, during this year. If I go on speculating even more (don't believe in this), I'd say between September-December. DON'T TAKE TOO SERIOUSLY.

For the TOH compatibility, only my personal guess (not even reading between the lines) is that we won't see that implemented in the same way, even that the dimensions might stay the same. My guess is based on purely the way it's currently working (not too user friendly)

I was also suggesting a question related to TOH compatibility with next Jolla phone.

please forget about toh compatibility.... that would be a shitty move of jolla.

just believe me on my word.

dirkvl ( 2015-02-23 22:39:42 +0300 )edit

@dirkvl still would love to get an answer on that question to just end all speculations on it.

the original jolla is awesome, but not perfect. but you can only expect so much from a first phone. . if you however design a new phone -and have the ultimate chance to learn and improve- but instead impose yourself with such an infinite list of restrictions, both external and internal, you will have destroyed progress, innovation and will end up with the same phone. . that would be a shitty move. forget about toh compatibility. it will not happen

a better question would be if the other-half concept will be continued in future model(s)

What are your plans on support for paid apps and additional Qt modules in harbour?

EDIT: I'm very sorry, in all the work I just forgot to bring this up... Hope we'll get something soon, but looking at this recent tweet, can't rely on that... https://twitter.com/IekkuPylkka/status/576301856693030912

apps strict to be paid? or maybe donation program? or through advertisements (ggggg.... frightened....)

cemoi71 ( 2015-02-24 23:59:07 +0300 )edit

Well, still nothing really new on that front even in the dedicated thread: https://together.jolla.com/question/6522/harbourstore-support-for-paid-applications/ : "we are actively working on something but we don't have anything to announce at this point." (cybette)

What are the future plans for Ambiences? It seems like Jolla had a vision for this feature that hasn't fully been realised. Have your ideas changed?

EDIT: Sailfish OS 2 design includes ambiences as before, but now they are available via swipe-down menu (same menu have an option to lock the device). The previous swipe-from-side on home screen is reserved for partner contents. This goes with both the phone and the tablet.

Plans for releasing SFOS2 are currently for May 2015, but this is yet due to change

not just for the ambience... for the whole design...

notification screen, what are the plans to see calendar events, feeds, todo reminders, similar to N9?

Sailfish OS 2 introduces a wider notification screen, available from home screen via flick right gesture. Notifications are expanded with events and FB+Twitter feeds, but I saw no visuals on TODO there. New question for that, if not already requested?

Please also ask this:

Was there ANY further progress/ initiative on implementing the facebook feed to the events screen since December 2013? Or was Jolla rejected by Facebook to implement this must-have feature? If yes (or they are unable to give an answer on this:) Will and/or is there ANY possibilty to get the facebook feed done in very near future e.g. with partnering with any bigger company (Ubuntu?!) to get noticed by facebook/or be able to implement it and is Jolla intending to do so?

What about the licensing of the SailfishOS code? When do you want to make the marketing campaign true?

I really like Jolla, bought the phone and love the tablet but i will only buy it if there is a clear statement of yours.

EDIT: Widely answered in my upcoming video interviews, from several points of view. In short: Jolla is partnering up, quite soon too if I got it right, with 3rd parties. While Jolla is still a smaller start up, Sailfish OS will have parts of the code as proprietary, trying to sell the license for other manufacturers.

Interested on this too, let's see

Freeing Silica components would be of particular interest if it means easier sharing or porting of applications between Sailfish and others platforms using QML, e.g. Ubuntu.

Is there anything big coming up in Russia, as their Secretary of Technology (or whatever the exact title is) suggested?

EDIT: No more on this at this point - Sailfish is introduced there, but the government is listening to several other options, making possible decisions later. Check this news post for the latest official coverage

Check Review Jolla, there's already a news post of a meeting

@simo i know this, but it does not provide a definite outcome

For me it tells that Sailfish is one possible candidate there, but even more it tells about what Russia is after in their interest towards Sailfish/Tizen. I'll have an interesting discussion on that with some sailor I hope, but I'm not expecting your question to get any direct answer. This will be asked and discussed :)

Sorry guys, no more questions until someone else joins in interviewing. I got a huge list to go through via the form, but those posted here already are also added to that. Thanks for interest, until later! You guys always surprise me with your great activity and DIT!

EDIT: I edited some answers directly into each question below - hope some are satisfying. Sorry for not catching all the info what we want :/

There have been a lot of impressive developments on SaifishOS outside of Jolla COUCHmr patchmanagerCOUCH but also from a lot of other people.

If Jolla is expanding its sales, number of models, number of device types, is the plan to stay:

  • small, flexible and agile like now and find other ways to reward developers (encourage donations or paid apps etc)
  • grow larger, reduce agility, but be able to deliver more polished products

The question is not whether sales are going awesome, Jolla rarely comments on that, but IF at some point in the future this happens, what is the vision.

Also, I think that a lot of sailors have a different view or opinion on this, could make an interesting reflection.

EDIT: Asked in an upcoming video interview from Juhani Lassila, hold on for publishing that one for full answer. In short: Agility seems important to them.

maps app with downloadable maps and turn to turn voice navigation

EDIT: Sorry, didn't even bother to ask about this :) There's a wide discussion on TJC, noted by Jolla, but they seem to remain even too silent on this... While not having it, let's just use some Android apps for this feature.

If the tablet is not a surprise and the highly motivation of jolla is a deeper communication with community. Why all the design, gesture, the user experience of the new version 2 is so discreet? or concealed? i thought the force of jolla would be to have a deep bound to the community to have the best for the community. i don't want to open the pandora box, or destroy the relation. that's just a point that i don't understand. maybe i am blind, but i don't see some much concept points, where community people, could help on decision between many parts (split screen, exfat on sd-cards). seems that cover action could be limited... Has someone any idea on how sfos 2 will look like? :-(

EDIT: Asked this on an upcoming video interview with Carol Chen - I wasn't fully satisfied with the answer for you, but in general: Transparency must be one of our main goals as a community, and we should encourage Jolla to keep this up. They're getting better on it, in my experience from the latest months.

Trying to figure out a question out of this... But important points there yeah

simo ( 2015-02-24 11:21:52 +0300 )edit

Patience, Jolla early stated that sailfish 2 and the tablet will be shown during MWC, which is only one week away. And also posted a recent blog on the topic. It is frustating to wait, I know, but time will tell.

nick75 ( 2015-02-24 11:37:01 +0300 )edit

@nick75 that's for me not a question of patience, or bound it time. i have a lot's a things to do that busy me (thankfully). that is just a question about strategy wanted from jolla, that community people find great. which are contradictory for me, and probably others. i found Communication jolla <=> community is deeper (that's really great) as by a lots of other x-system and there community. but there is a leak, in those points that i have told here (if you understand what i mean).
