As the amount of questions grows, adding right tags to your question gets more and more important. Readers do not go through a list of 1500 questions - they filter them, and most easiest filters are the tags.
Questions can be filtered with several tags (showing only questions which have them all) - Note: searching for multiple tags only works on the quick search (bar on the right), not in Tags page (link at top right).
The most important reserved tags are:
update
Reserved only for release notes issued when a new software update is available.roadmap
Reserved only to tag items that are committed to be delivered in a future update. Please note it is important you do not use these else the tags relevancy is lost.
The most important user tags are:
feature-request
/ enhancement
/ idea
Use when the question relates to new featuresbug
Use when existing feature, either in UI, App or in the device itself doesn't work as it shouldhow-to
Whenever your question is about how to get something done with existing features.android
when the question is anyhow realated to Android Support (usually an Android App)ui
/ ux
UI stands for User Interface, UX for User eXperienceaskbot
IMPORTANT when your question relates to using this together portal(version number)
when you are referring to a certain software, it's a good practice to mention the version with the matching tag, like 1.0.2.5
.If the question relates to a single Sailfish App, it's also normal to add a name of that app as a tag. Most used at the moment are email
,browser
,contacts
/people
, calendar
, camera
, settings
Tags like Sailfish
, SailfishOS
and especially Jolla
are not too useful, as about all questions relates to these.
Differentiate:
For example ambience
is a meta-setting and has functions - while ambience-creation
should be about what is missing in the path of creating those or how-to create them. Edit: when adding a multiple word tag, use "-" between the words.
IN CONCLUSION: Try to select tags wisely. Well chosen tags direct the right kind of attention towards your question and helps others, including developers, to concentrate on questions of their speciality or interest. Avoid extra tagging - the ability to use 5 doesn't mean there have to be 5.
ALSO: If you run into an important question, and it seems to miss a relevant tag, please edit the question to add one. Not all together visitors are familiar with using tags, so we could help each other a bit here. The goal is to get the most important questions under development (at this point, they are probably the questions tagged with bug
, ui
, ux
and existing Sailfish application names.
This is a very useful article and hopefully helps users here to tag their questions more appropriately. I have on wish though, could you briefly explain the usage and meaning of 'roadmap' in that description too,?
AFAIK it has the special meanining indcating some form commitment to the topic from Jolla's part (planning, thinking abt it, working on it, ..) and that it is closely monitored by site admins. We had this conversation in some other question here, so wouldn't it be appropriate to describe it briefly here?
foss4ever ( 2014-01-14 23:33:15 +0200 )editone thing is still not clear to me, maybe you can add it to the answer: tags are separated by spaces. how do I render a multi-word-tag, e.g. text input methods? text-input-methods, textinputmethods, other? It's not feasible to make one-word tags only, it would be to imprecise

Also, there's some cleaning to do in the tags so far (1200 different tags are used). If you run into a tag similar to another one, it would be useful to retag the question and change that to a more used tag (e.g. account
(used once) --> accounts
(used 37 times).
If you'd like to join the cleaners: https://together.jolla.com/tags/?sort=name
(pick a group of tags and bring them under discussion to "cleaning together")
I also started re-tagging some questions. Care does indeed need to be taken. But it is a fun thing to do. :-) I also wonder where we could discuss tag related issues in case of unclear tags or such or the question whether some tags should be merged or not. Should we have that discussion here?

Content here seems somewhat outdated, it takes some edits to move anything to the new guideline topic "How to tag your questions". In general, my idea there is to present featured tags (as reserved), official tags (as reserved), the predefined tags list (visible when posting new questions), and as the most important part, guide users to add more tags related to their issue.
What makes things a bit easier now, compared to the time when this guideline answer was posted, is that the tag cloud has "settled down" a bit during that time. It should be possible to still list some of the most used tags, but maybe not as wide as the current answer here.
I personally find tagging questions a very important topic, so putting a lot of effort into this guide to make it usable. Aiming to tag guide easy to use, short, nice to link for new users in a comment, let's see... At least I see my current answer here quite bad, looking at it now :)
The guideline project discusses on these old guideline posts until September 20th, updating and gathering information from here to a new post The Guideline. You're welcome to join the project, for example by editing and commenting this answer.

Together HowTo: Answer accepted
Difference of roadmap & feature-request tags? [duplicate]
Markdown basics [not relevant]
break down your ideas/feature requests
Why auto tweeting cannot be enabled in this forum? [answered]
How to vote for features? [answered]
Increase character count limit for comments on Together [answered]
Code in answers is formatted incorrectly [answered]
Add links to text version of together.jolla.com information emails
Would it be a good idea if I converted all these to one wiki "Together Guidelines" (question including the topics, each topic linking to the appropiate answer)? By this we would have another 4 posts cleaned, and one central for any future guidelines too.
Please vote for this comment to support, or add any dissenting opinions to be voted instead.

eric ( 2014-01-27 23:05:28 +0200 )editguidelines
is a feature tag (visible on default homepage top right column), I don't see the need of combining all info into a single post. Moreover, making a very big post bears the risk of diluting information. I have already noticed that on smaller posts, some of us tend to read too quickly and miss critical bits of information :) I'd rather attempt to improve how the existing topics are presented than merging them into a real big long post... What do you think?@eric I had no idea that Featured Tags were selected by moderators - looking at those now I see your point, no need for any combining. By the way, I suppose you implemented the
guidelines
tag in the first place? In the presentations I used the model suggested by "Help" (question as a question). It seems to work, as there are no comments conserning that. Later I've found it useful to add links to the question part when there are a lot of answers (see here and here). In overall, I think that the actual question is good to be presented at the top, quite short, but any amount of additional information fits below it. Looking at those two links, do you think that the "answer list" should be moved to the top too, right after the question?Another point of view... what I wrote above might fit to the polls and guides, but what about the main issues - bug reports and feature-requests? In the dev point of view, breaking into details is probably the best way as long as the tags are used well. We are yet in the beginning, everything still under control, but if something isn't done soon I smell a problem in the future: Later, in the user point of view, the current system might make it almost impossible to avoid duplicates, and it might spread the votes all around so that some very important issues are not found by the voters any more. Maybe it would be easier for average users if there were clear topics where they report, e.g. question "Email bugs", each answer representing one bug, all answers (known bugs) listed in the question. Same goes with "Email feature requests" or "Sailfish UI gestures" etc. Votes for questions would determine which subjects users see as the most important, and votes for answers would work better too. How would the dev team see this as an option? Would this work in that other end?
Additionally the current system relies on tags quite strongly. Tag clouds are not yet part of the basic knowledge of an average user, so this plays a role in the future too. Anyway, everything's great so far :D
