When the screen of Jolla C is off, it sometimes keeps making a ticking sound with irregular intervals. Sample

It doesn't bother too much, expect maybe when trying to sleep and the phone is in the same room.

I'm guessing it is a hardware problem, and if so, I'm posting this so that Jolla may inform Intex about the possible speaker problems (assuming the similarity of hardware).

For me it seems, the sound comes from the upper area near the camera. I thought it could be from the cooling down of the device after usage (i.e. the heatsink or something).

Had this also, it started once I tried the camera and it's seems to be the sound of the camera during the focus. If I reboot the phone, the noise disappears. As soon as I start and then close the camera again, the sound comes back. I do know for how long, I had the phone since 3 hours only! Just hoping it will not damage the camera. I tried to kill the app but no luck.

Holy cow!!! This seems to be the reason... Even if you launch the camera app and tap to focus, you can hear this sound every single time!

I am very glad that this seems to be a software related problem, because it drives me insane and I definitely will not use the Jolla C as my main device very long if this is not gonna be fixed.

@ejjoman I have become to think your first guess, device cooling down would be the reason. When I press the left side of the phone softly, the casing makes sound which resembles this screen-off ticking. Opening / Running camera probably heats something quickly, causing the cool down after camera closes. But this is just speculation.

Yes, no problem with focus. I made some tests, sometimes the ticking sound last 3 minutes, sometimes 10 ...

I can also confirm that my C is ticking. I can safely say that it comes from rear camera. Same sound can be heard when camera autofocuses.

Hi

Using journalctl I found that the systemd log shows the following messages, each at the same time that the tick happens.

Maybe this is also related to some power management issue: I have noticed that the device sometimes turns on the screen and shows a "connected" message in the status bar....

Hmmm.. I have the ticking primarily when I'm connected to a WiFi network. This could be it.

Unfortunately the issue still present with the 2.1.0.9 release. Any information from Jolla on any workarounds would be highly appreciated.

I would deeply appreciate if one of the sailors could give us a status update on this issue. If there are any known workaround/unverified patches please let us know/share with us! (I have tried all the mentioned workarounds below and none of them worked unfortunately.)

The issue almost occurs almost every day on my Aqua Fish, and it is pretty annoying to wake up at the night to the clicking (after I used the camera and forgot to reboot before start sleeping). Sometimes the clicking occurs during calls which also very annoying.

*This issue has been addressed many times on this forum by many people, but it hasn't been fixed yet! I would would request the Jolla Developers to look into this issue as soon as possible because this is seriously damaging the autofocus of the camera for both Jolla C and Sailfish OS Intex Aqual Fish phones! I had this issue for a long time from 2.0.2.xx to 2.0.4.13 * I did follow many steps and guidlines but none helped me in fixing this issue!

@bwelmers: I stopped and disabled the sshd and restarted the phone, fired up the camera and then locked the screen, still it ticks!

Yes. It's the camera focus that makes the sound.

Here is a nice WORKAROUND: You can set the focus to infinite in camera settings to make the sound disappear.

Camera module itself is noisy, thats a different and separate bug from speaker clicking issue.

I can confirm that the ticking only occurs after having used the camera. After a reboot, the ticking sound disappears until the camera is used again. Thereafter it is persistent until the next reboot.

However, the ticking only occurrs if the camera lens is covered, for instance by paper, by a bag or because the phone lies on a table etc.

That is why I am pretty shure it is the camera and its Software related.

For me, the ticking disapear after several minutes, usually 3 to 10 minutes.

For me, it disappeared when the lens was not covered anymore but it reappeared when covering the lens again. I did not let it tick for a longer period of time. Therefore I am indeed unsure whether or not it would disapper on its own.

As of now it seems that update 2.1.0.10 will contain the fix. We are testing it.
2.1.0.10 is expected to roll out in the next couple of weeks.

The Bug finally got fixed!! SFOS 2.1.0.10 (Early Access) includes a fix for the clicking camera bug, which does work according to my tests so far. Finally I can use the camera without having to reboot the phone afterwards :)

Not sure what it means, but looks like the "lens parking" wasn't succesful somehow.

After updating my Jolla C to Aurajoki, the sound still remains. Has anybody found a workaround to stop the ticking, or is reboot the only possibility?

I would suppose, that the ticking may damage the camera, but rebooting every time I used the camera or the torch should not be a permanent solution.
