While it seems really early for something like this its good to start submitting ideas early so that the designers can think about it.

So what features do you want for the next Jolla Phone? Make sure to look through the previous answers and vote accordingly

The first thing i'd like is to make the bezels all around the screen smaller. As small as possible in fact. This will probably make it a one-hand-device for more people. I have normal hands (i think i am in the 50th percentile) and it feels a bit big in the hand.

No need for a bigger screen. 720p would be good but even at qHD it looks really nice.

If possible move the headphone jack on the bottom of the device.

Also i wouldn't mind if it was a bit lighter.

Possibility of screw attached metallic TOH for a more sturdy feel along with easily replaceable plastic ones for people who like to change them easily would be a great addition.

USB type C (the reversible one) is something jolla must consider.

even at qHD Much as I like my Jolla, I have to disagree. It is pretty clear that the interface was a higher resolution - for example the skinny font used on the launcher pages is often blurry on qHD.

Also I suspect that the choice of SoC forced on Jolla when ST-Ericsson decided to stop manufacturing or supplying the original choice of SoC is the reason behind the low-end display (the maximum resolution the current SoC supports is qHD). A higher specced SoC should mean we can get a better screen.

A bezel is needed to hold the phone comfortably and safely in one hand without accidentally touching the screen with some flesh of the hand. A thinner bezel wouldn't turn out good, I suppose. The thinner the bezel the more slippery the phone feels, because you have less place to hold it.

@pycage

They will of course need to prototype and test a lot in order to get the thin bezel right.

Make the display transreflective, like on the N900. This adds a layer behind the LCD that reflects light, so that it becomes completely readable even in strong direct sunlight, only the colors wash out a bit. It also saves a lot on battery power, since the backlight doesn't need to be nearly as strong as on a conventional display.

The transreflective idea is the best of all! I wonder it!

Would it be possible to have a Low Power Mode with a transflective display?

My main concern is that it has the same physical size as the current phone, to fit an old Other Half. If OH can fit for more than one generation it will make the concept more attractive to 3rd party developers, and the sooner it's announced the better.

edit flag offensive delete publish link more

Comments

True. The best way to present a smaller OH form factor would be to do so the same day as the next 4.5" model. It should be no problem to package the current hardware in a smaller form factor and have it ready that day. The smaller phone should be cheaper anyway.

The Other Half concept is pretty much wasted if each new phone has a new size. The current model is at the upper edge of the comfort zone for most people, size-wise. A bigger screen still is a possibility if bezels are made smaller, and it is nice to think that the next Jolla most likely won't be bigger. And there is absolutely no need for a third form factor. The Other half and the Smaller Half will do.

I would happily give up TOH for a smaller phone as long as I would have Sailfish gesture based interface, wireless charging and be able to change my battery.

The Other Half is the only reason for keeping the next Jolla at the same size. Otherwise I would hope next Jolla to be a bit smaller still keeping the same display size (=smaller bezel). I find Jolla to be a little too big for a comfortable one hand use. It's always hard to reach either top or bottom edge of the screen without changing the grip position.

@Jolla095 I agree. I think it would be good if they could cut the extra unused screensize on the edges, and bring the phone frame closer to the virtual screen.

USB OTG and USB MHL output, both are state of the art and have to be available in next device! Instead of MHL, a Micro HDMI can be there.

too complement idea:

  • True battery with nano carbon hole with high efficiency life in use everyday 1 week in use, 1 month standby like older Nokia phone ! (I'm not speaking about batterie issue from NFC of TOH at all) and high speed charging.
  • OLED Screen less power angry (the actual jolla is good but i think is use to much power energy ! In fact, is lighter due to modern battery light and very thin OLED screen less than 100gr still case polycarbon plastic for better antenna reception
  • robust body protected waterproof/dust
  • PureView camera available for european phone !

A smartphone without this requirement is not a true smartphone !

The short active and standby times have always truly been a problem in smartphones. An auto recharging system like solar panel or a super capacity battery would be needed along with proper power management.

Maybe with a screen that can be read without backlighting. With only one processor core. Radical energy saving settings. ...et cetera...

"robust body protected waterproof/dust" It's very unrealistic to want both I2C/TOH system AND waterproofing the device.

I never understood the need for more than 1.5 days of active use in the battery. Simply plug into charger every night when you go to bed. That way you have a fixed routine for charging, so you never forget.

@00prometheus, 1.5 days would be good, but if you use 3G and move around a fair bit, the current battery won't last 16 hours -- sometimes not even 10. So that's short by a factor of 2-3.

Jolla now has an elegant phone. The next one should simply be smaller.

The look and feel of the current jolla phone works really well for me. I hope to upgrade the First Half some day but right now it's simply not necessary. My eyes are still clear enough for a 4.5" screen and sailfishOS keeps full speed even with moderate processors. And people like the looks of my phone so much they even stop me to say so! I even have hands that are big enough.

The only thing my daughter complains about is the size. She grows quickly but her Nokia 700 still fits her small hands better while being almost as stylish. Her next phone will need to be bigger, though. ...and yet smaller than the current Jolla offering. That is why I hope that the next phone from Jolla will be smaller.

If they can fit the HW in a ~123x61 frame and keep the screen in 4.5 inches 720p i'd be more than happy.

The current specs would be enough if crammed behind a ~3.75" screen, even with a greater thickness.

The size of the Nokia N9 would be perfect. Perfect!

Yes, the N9 size was perfect - fit my hand (I've got small hands. Yes, I've got used to the Jolla now, but I think it would be possible to make a device with a 4" screen, but the same outer measurements as the N9 (3,9" screen).), but still wasn't too small to actually function.

Seeing that others appreciated the size of the N9, and the response about a continued use of The Other Half, got me thinking, and I submitted a candidate to be a "The Other Half Option 8 Contestant".

That idea should also work for a smaller device, or the "PadPhone" approach could be used, in case of demand for a larger screen.

Smaller device would be excellent. I like my Jolla a lot but it is too big and demands that I move the grip to go from top swipe to bottom swipe. Not very nice.

Only other really necessary change would be rubberised backside as the phone is large and slippery at the moment. Although that might be fixed by simply a smaller device. Benefit of smaller device is also that screen doesn't need to have crazy high resolution.

FM receiver is an absolute MUST for the next model! (This is basically just about choosing the right chip in the first place and wiring everything required. This is not extra HW.)

The fact that I cannot listen to good old fashioned radio on my Jolla was the biggest letdown. FM radio is still very much alive in my country. I am not interested to buy more bandwidth from my telco just to listen to music. Unlimited plans are much too expensive where I live. It is also nice to listen to local radio stations when travelling to other countries. If I am restricted to IP radio, I would have to pay for horrendous roaming fees.

The Nokia Lumia 1320 has the same Qualcomm MSM8930AB aboard and according to the specs it has FM radio. http://reviewjolla.blogspot.be/2013/11/jolla-specs-and-user-experiences.html Look on this blog (mobile connectivity), acccording to them there's a small possibilitie that FM radio can be available in the future.

Include ROM-based backup for bootloader:

Since the Jolla could safely be said to be a "tinkerers device", it would be very nice to have some sort of ROM-based bootloader restore function from which it would be possible to at least get the phone started and restore a backup system, even if the internal flash was completely corrupted. Knowing that it is there would ease the mind of many tinkerers when experimenting, and certainly raise the Jollas rep as the phone to tinker on.

It would also make it possible to include a nice GUI-based Windows/Mac/Linux utility with the single button "Reset Jolla to factory settings", so that normal users who mess up their device by installing the wrong things from Warehouse or any other uninformed bungling can easily reset their device whatever has happened to it, without having to send the phone back on warranty.

Edit: Oh, by the way, it is completely essential that the ROM is only a backup for the boot loader, not that that the boot loader be placed in ROM so that it can not be altered! Doing that would immediately disqualify the Jolla as a tinkerers device, achieving the opposite of the intended effect!

External SD card and USB mass storage remains a mandatory feature!

Do not even start thinking about omitting the external SD card in the next Jolla phone! Just because Google wants to kill external SD cards, Jolla does not have to play along. And give it the best support possible so that applications can make use of it. And yes, I am completely OK with data loss or corruption when I am stupid enough to remove the SD card while it is mounted. Not all features must be idiot-proof.

Now that Jolla has delivered their first device and showed the world their up to this task, it is time to bring out the big guns. I think the next device should incorporate specs that are up to today's standards. That way it would attract more customers and developers to Jolla and Sailfish platform. The first priority is of course the SailfishOS but once the SailfishOS has matured the next step will be the new device.

The features in order of priority:

  • A 4.5" at least 720p display (preferrably OLED) Gorilla 3/Sapphire Glass visible in direct sunlight, low power consumption and accurate colors. The current Jolla phone display has a slight blue tint on it and it definitely affects the Ambiences. Even the cheaper devices today feature a better display than Jolla (Moto G for example). This should be first priority, Jolla deserves a better display.
  • TOH compatibility with the first device is a must. Developers would love it and old Jolla owners wouldn't throw a tantrum for investing to The Other Halves. All community TOH creations wouldn't be of waste either.
  • Low power consumption, bigger battery. While the SailfishOS itself affects the power consumption the most, the hardware should also be as power efficient as possible. Today's smartphones and their OSs are power hungry (looking at you Android), this is where Jolla has a chance to shine and differentiate itself from the crowd. Uptime should be at least two full days in low to medium use.
  • Support for US LTE network frequencies. While the US smartphone market may be over crowded, more users and developers on the platform sure helps in the adaptation of the platform.
  • Quad-core, low power SoC. While Jolla doesn't need quad-core SoC to run SailfishOS smoothly, it certainly doesn't hurt. Jolla is quite pricey and the dual-core SoC is a deal breaker for many.
  • 2 GB RAM, 16/32/64 GB storage + microSD slot (SDXC up to 64GB). Because who wouldn't love more memory and storage.
  • Better camera, like 13 Mpix. The current camera is ok but if you take 16:9 photos, it's only 6 Mpix and the colors are washed out.
  • NFC that is usable for more than just TOH. Install another NFC chip or something, just make it work.
  • More than just colored Other Halves to really promote the almost infinite possibilites of the Other Half concept.

Even though it's not all about the specs, customers most often use it as their criteria when looking for a new smartphone. A cheaper Android phone with better specs than Jolla may seem more attractive; Android phones most often deliver more bang for buck than Jolla based solely on specs. These features would really boost the interest on the platform and help SailfishOS gain foothold on the fierce smartphone market.

"Uptime should be at least two full days in low to medium use" I get close to a week - last charge was Friday afternoon, now we have Wednesday evening and I am down to 40% with quiet some browsing on the weekend, some texting and a few 5-10minute calls... North America... well there is a market but it seems to be the smallest of all markets - 350M devices are peanuts compared to Asia, 10% SailfishOS in China is probably about 30% of NA... 10% of Asia is probably 100% of NA. Even Europe is a much bigger market than NA. And not to forget the 1B people in Africa in need of a Jolla shipped with a Solar-Charger-TOH.

Toxip, As an addition to your suggestions when it comes to TOH backwards compatibility I think that Jolla could offer several form factors of TOHs. The old one that fits the current Jolla should still work for the second Jolla for models with the same form factor, but lets say a model with a bigger screen could have a differents TOH that fits for that size. I hope you understand what I mean.

@chemist I don't know how you can make Jolla last for more than a week since it only last for 1,5 days at max. NA market may be small but that doesn't make it less important. I think it's very important market for Jolla to gain wider adaptation. Jolla is doing the right thing starting with Asian market where it has better chances to gain foothold but they should eventually try to enter NA market as well.

@Larswad Jolla is designed to be used with only one hand. Having a bigger screen would make it harder to use. 4.5" screen is too big for some people already. Jolla probably wouldn't have the resources to release two devices, it's too risky. Honestly, I don't understand why manufacturers want to create bigger and bigger devices, Jolla doesn't need to join that race. Although the 2nd Jolla should be a bit different than the first one to distinguish it from the previous one. Maybe slightly slimmer.

Toxip ( 2014-08-21 12:58:48 +0300 )edit

@Toxip I know of the importance in terms of developers - and NA people are easily manipulated to buy fancy tech stuff too... for the 1,5d of lasting battery, I do not use whatsapp... and I managed to drain it to 20% last night while fiddling for 2 hours. So I charged last night, that has a 120+ hours use (Fri100%->Wed20%), those % left on the device usually gave me another day, I have to admit I have pretty good LTE coverage over here so the consumption should be even lower than with GSM/EDGE

chemist ( 2014-08-21 13:29:43 +0300 )edit

@chemist Sure it won't be easy to enter NA market. Nokia struggled for a long time to enter the market but never really got there. I use mitäkuuluu so it's probably why it drains my battery. Still 1,5d ain't too shabby. I have only 3G so that may drain it. Is LTE energy conservative, I didn't know that. Maybe I should get a 4G connection then. :)

Canada, too. My carrier is solely UMTS Band 4 (ie. 3G on the pair of 1700/2100), so without frequency support for W-CDMA on the "AWS" blocks my Jolla remains sadly a small wifi tablet. Even with the less pocket-friendly form factor than the N9, I'd still switch to using my Jolla as my primary device in a heartbeat if it could actually talk to my cellular network. Ironically, was the only NA frequency set that the N900 supported, which is why I went to my current carrier to begin with!

Australia too, the main carrier is 3G 850 (UMTS Band 5). In the cities we have 4G but for the vast majority telstra (NextG) is the only option. According to wikipedia this affects other countries like New Zealand(XT Mobile Network) and various Asia telcos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands#Deployments_by_region_.28UMTS-FDD.29
