Mitakuuluu, stop using immediately
Everyone, if you are using Mitakuuluu, stop using it immediately. Whatsapp has started blocking numbers of people that are using it.

Maybe is time to start porting Telegram https://core.telegram.org/api or TOX https://wiki.tox.im/Main_Page to SailfishOS. If a developer jumps in, I'm ready to pay for her/his efforts.
There is also qt library for telegram https://code.launchpad.net/~libqtelegram-team/libqtelegram/ I've been planning on writing telegramm app for Sailfish using that library but my time is very limited.
TemeV ( 2014-11-02 12:17:58 +0200 )editUggh. Please no telegram. Haven't you learned yet? Yeah it might be somewhat more open, it might be better encrypted, but you still rely on one single party.
Fuzzillogic ( 2014-11-02 22:53:10 +0200 )edit@clau, I guess at least daemon needs to be written from scratch. UI side can of course be reused
@Fuzzillogic, I don't consider Telegram being more secure, but more functional than Whatsapp. I'd love to use some better alternative (e.g. xmpp with some improvements) but it would be pretty much forever alone messenger. Until some good messenger becomes mainstream we have to stick with what we have now.
TemeV ( 2014-11-03 00:45:54 +0200 )editI think not Telegram, but TextSecure should be the alternative: https://together.jolla.com/question/11534/sailfish-redphone-and-textsecure-apps/
martind ( 2014-11-05 09:30:23 +0200 )editI don't understand why the OP was downvoted. The information is correct, accounts have been blocked. According to a comment here someone's account was blocked with version 0.8.15 too.
This just shows how much Jolla needs to deal with (push) notifications for Android apps. If Mitakuuluu becomes unusable, there're very few alternatives to use (XMPP which is not suitable for mobile usage - you lose messages when connection drops - and Facebook?). I may have to switch to another phone, sadly, just to have push notifications of some sort.
At the least, Android notifications should become first class citizen. Apps like Telegram do work in background and provide notifications in Events screen, but there's no sound, nor LED activity AFAIK.
Another option is for Jolla to deal directly with some app developers (Whatsapp, Telegram, Viber, Line etc) to help them provide proper versions for Jolla Android environment.
I second Android notifications. Also note: - Although the developer has submitted on github a possible solution, no one has yet confirmed that it has worked for them. In other words, everyone has sent email to unblock to whatsapp, but no one has confirmed that they were unblocked - Even if you get unblocked, I am not sure if continued use to mitakuuluu will not result in you getting blocked again
Aashish ( 2014-10-31 19:24:23 +0200 )editI recommend to stop using Mitakuuluu immediately- it seems that WhatsApp is not going to unblock the blocked numbers without a considerable effort. I got an answer (see https://github.com/CODeRUS/mitakuuluu2/issues/278#issuecomment-61330156) but they did not unblock me. For more information, see the link.
skvark ( 2014-11-01 00:04:48 +0200 )edit@ayush that's your job to convince them. This stunt of whatsapp is simply yet another example you can use, to show them why you should really avoid those proprietary, closed systems.
I have a few basic rules for just about any internet service: 1) I must be able to host it myself, if I want to. (I could host my e-mail myself, if I want to.). 2) The service must be decentralized, and thus no single entity in total control, no single point of failure. (XMPP and e-mail complies with these rules)
Fuzzillogic ( 2014-11-02 22:50:34 +0200 )editI got banned instantly after installing an update proposed by Mitäkuuluu. Have got the same (lame) message from WA support, but I'm not willing to beg for mercy on my knees before them. In my initial message, I stated that they have not released a native Sailfish app, so there is no reason to block Mitäkuuluu users. Got their response.. first it made me laugh my ss off. Then it made me mad as hll.
I too vote for open standards. The app should be available on multiple platforms, Android being the most important alien OS. And about running servers that was mentioned somewhere in this dizcussion -- I run a Linux VPS that can be used for testing. And, maybe one day we could see new business emerging. The future of Internet is here. Okay, let's cool down a little.. I'm not holding my breath :)
JuhaP ( 2014-11-04 21:58:09 +0200 )editJust send my 3rd mail to WA, 2of them trough the official app. I do find their responce quite cute; we are beeing banned because our unnofficial client is possibly passing our info to 3rd parties... I for one doubt that, and i suspect it beeing the other way around; because we are using a unofficial client they cannot sell our personal info to 3rd parties ;)
After 4 persistant days of follow ups with Whatsapp support, I have finally got my number unblocked. I am now on the android version of whatsapp. Though it works, there are a number of issues like whatsapp contacts not visible, no notification sounds, etc. But I really dont have a choice for now. I really wish I could continue using Mitakuuluu. That was such an amazing experience.
When I think about it, reports of whatsapp blocking accounts started after the developer released the latest version (v-0.8.15-4). The version was released with a note that the version has not been tested. I am wondering if there was something in that version that alerted whatsapp and triggered the wave of bans. If so, I really hope coderus can find out what it is and release a fix so that we can go back to using it. Until then (and until whatsapp step back on their monitoring), its the half baked experience of the Andorid app
Hi I stopped using mitakuuluu as you and switched to android - whatsapp Just a tipp for notifications(it is mentioned somewhere but dont remember where..): You have to leave the whatsapp-window open and also install an android app that sets notification sounds. Just download one and set a sound for the notification. You are done.
TK ( 2014-11-03 22:21:23 +0200 )editOkay, I'm fed up with Whatsapp. If they don't want my money after the free trial time, I won't insist.
So any suggestions for alternatives that allow me to run a native Sailfish client and that are featureful and cross-platform enough that I can recommend them to friends using other OSes with a clear conscience?
There´s no native Sailfish client, and I really wonder why no app developer have started to take a look at the Open WisperSystems RedPhone and TextSecure. Unless there are problems that I've never heard of, this looks like a suitable Sailfish app project, to me.
eson ( 2014-11-01 15:27:10 +0200 )editWhen I tried to use the Android version of TestSecure on Sailfish some months ago, it didn't work reliably (often didn't receive messages at all or only days later). If they had a C library, I might actually have tried putting a native UI on top, but translating the whole thing from Java or Objective C sounds like a bit too much for a project on the side (at least on my own) when I just want to use it.
And even if I were that bored, perhaps the time would be better spent for some decent XMPP client.
Kevin ( 2014-11-01 16:26:59 +0200 )edit@Kevin Ok, I'm not a developer, so I have no idea how much work it would take or how difficult it would be porting TextSecure to Sailfish. It was just a reflection over the fact that we need a native privacy protected im/voip client that are available on all platforms. Android, iOS, SailfishOS and preferable, also Windows Phone. Being the only Jolla user in my social circle, I have the same problem as everyone else in this community... I'm forced to use something barely functioning android stuff, if I want to communicate. It's getting pretty frustrating. ;)
eson ( 2014-11-01 19:56:52 +0200 )editPerhaps Fleep (www.fleep.io) guys are interested in building a native Jolla versioon, with a help of community?
Lauri Laanemets ( 2014-11-01 20:02:38 +0200 )editYou like(d) Mitakuuluu? Support the creator here on Indiegogo.
Take a look at this GitHub WhatsAPI takedown notice https://github.com/github/dmca/blob/master/2014-02-12-WhatsApp.md They have been after 3rd party apps before.
Btw, the description of how WhatsApp works is also very interesting. Take an open standard, add your own flavours and lock users in. Seen this happen too many times.
Install android whatsapp, try to register here, after getting blocked notification email to whatsapp support and ask to unblock you, because you used official android client, and never tell them you used mitakuuluu http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1444939&postcount=1647
Do any of the blocked users have a paid acount? Think you will not get blocked if you have a paid whatsapp acount. I have one and will start using mitakuuluu just to check
Still on mitakuuluu, not blocked yet. have paid account but allready found people with paid accounts who have bren banned so that doesn't matter . also using the android app is not a guarantee to not being banned. found that people are being banned for using an unsupported device... this meams imo that Jolla should get involved and get in contact with whatsapp

I've never had a Facebook account but that, and Whatsapp, is what I would have opted out if I did... If what you say is true.
eson ( 2014-10-31 17:58:21 +0200 )editAaaah, the joys of relying on closed systems with a single point of failure... I so informed you thusly. ;)
ossi1967 ( 2014-10-31 18:40:50 +0200 )editSomee accs were blocked due to protocol changes and not because of 'using an unofficial client'. So stop to scare the users pls.
Alex ( 2014-10-31 20:42:33 +0200 )editWhatsapp does infact mention in their FAQ that using unofficial clients is not accepted. That the protocol differences were triggering alerts is another thing entirely. It's even possible they've added some quirks to the protocol to catch unofficial clients too.
clau ( 2014-10-31 23:48:35 +0200 )editHas anyone who has paid to use WhatsApp been banned? I was previously under the impression that regardless of minor irregularities on client side, if you were on a paying account, their policy was don't-care. If paying accounts were blocked ... there may have been a recent change in policy. I was on the 'bad' iteration of Mitakuuluu when others were being banned, and I wasn't banned, and have a paid account.
