(this thread is reviewed on a monthly basis)

Q: How can I suggest a new language?
A: Add an answer below, if you have checked it hasn't been requested yet.

Q: My language was added to the translation tool, great thanks! How can others and myself enjoy translating it the most?
A: The answer is here.

Q: My language hasn't been added yet :(
A: Ensure it has a coordinator assigned, and if not, nominate yourself. Then we'll add your language to the tool.

Q: What is a coordinator?
A: The answer is here.

Q: How can I test the translation on my device?
A: Ping @martonmiklos and ask to build an rpm for your language. If desired, the localisation packages will be published on OpenRepos. You could also manage the RPM build by yourself. Here you can find the scripts used for building the current packages.

Cheers!

Dutch

We already have the Dutch keyboard in Sailfish OS why not translating the whole OS into Dutch? Belgium and the Netherlands are countries within the European Union and since the Jolla Phone is available for the whole European Union it's normally that it also supports all the languages spoken in the European Union.

Maybe this could be imported? https://openrepos.net/content/localhost/unofficial-jolla-language-pack-nl

That would be a nice start!

Yes, please please reuse the available translations! Can't believe this is actually going to happen. Had to look it up, but I 'asked' for this Dec 24 2013: More languages available (Dutch)

I haven't updated the mentioned translation for a couple of months now, but the sources should be up to date.

Jarno ( 2016-05-13 12:08:37 +0300 )edit

We need to export those strings from transifex as .ts, then I'll see if those can be converted/imported into pootle at ease or with some processing.

Pootle stores "po/" directory with the following format: "po/app_name/lang_ID/*" , e.g. po/sailfish-browser/en_GB/{sailfish-browser.ts,settings-sailfish-browser.ts}

Czech

We have translation project on transifex with 100 % of translations and packages at openrepos. We would like to see those translations in official Jolla translation project.

Hello and thank you!

The link to transifex says "Forbidden access", and I already see Czech translated to 99% here: https://www.transifex.com/kenya888/unofficial-jolla-translations

Is it a double effort? Also I've asked what's the best way to migrate from transifex to pootle here: https://together.jolla.com/question/134532/how-to-migrate-translation-strings-from-transifex-to-translatesailfishosorg/?sort=votes&page=1

sledges ( 2016-05-13 16:05:57 +0300 )edit

Honestly, I don't understand why there is the other project.
Sorry, I have posted link directly to language, It seems it is not supported by transifex for some reason. https://www.transifex.com/jozef-mlich/jolla-cesky/https://github.com/jmlich/jolla-cesky I can send you the *.tar.gz archive with *ts files if it helps. https://build.merproject.org/source/home:xmlich02/jolla-translations-cs_CZ/jolla-translations-cs_CZ-1.13.tar.bz2?rev=351308d193860b098cce52b75ca4aba4

xmlich02 ( 2016-05-13 19:15:30 +0300 )edit

By the way, we have also Slovak language with 81% of translations.

xmlich02 ( 2016-05-13 19:24:31 +0300 )edit

Hi, can you please set user 'nodevel' as coordinator of Czech language? Personally, I have very few time to work on Czech community translation right now. He is very active member of czech community I believe he will do better job than me. Thanks.

xmlich02 ( 2016-10-05 13:58:30 +0300 )edit

Thank you @xmlich02 for all your hard work, and let the Czech flag fly together with @nodevel \o/

Hungarian

I used to contribute to unofficial-jolla-translations for earlier versions, but the admin was as active as many translations can be seen now there...

Anyway, I would really like to see a Hungarian translation, and I am willing to contribute to that.

Szia,

I have updated the files to the 2.0.1.7 version and completed the translation, and due the lack of feedback from the maintainer in timely manner I have pushed the stuff to the github: https://github.com/martonmiklos/unofficial-jolla-translation

Since than I have got "coordinator" rights on transifex, so I will be able to merge my work back, just need to figure out how.

I have also built package from that which is available on openrepos: https://openrepos.net/content/martonmiklos/unofficial-hungarian-translation-jolla

martonmiklos ( 2016-05-15 22:13:09 +0300 )edit

Sounds excellent, that's definitely a great point to start from!

We should put some effort into convincing Jolla to create Hungarian language track on their new translation environment, and move the stuff there (and not to transifex).

Okay. I would like to be nominated to the coordinator role of the Hungarian translation.I have worked on the unofficial translation before, and I think it would be useful to finally make it official.

martonmiklos ( 2016-05-22 12:11:19 +0300 )edit

At the moment, there is only one Portuguese language option with Sailfish OS. The current Portuguese translation seems to be Portuguese from Portugal. But it should have two options: Portuguese from Portugal(pt-pt) and Portuguese from Brazil(pt-br). So, I suggest to open a new project of translation Sailfish OS to Portuguese from Brazil.

rmotao ( 2016-08-11 17:27:47 +0300 )edit

A transifex-es magyar fordításokat valaki merge-ölné a https://translate.sailfishos.org/ oldalra, mint "Hungarian" nyelv?

Greek

There is already a Greek keyboard layout and i [dglent] am contributor in the Greek translation in transifex for Sailfish OS. I'd like to contribute also in the new translation platform.

I (dglent) am translator of many open source projects as KDE, Mageia Linux (also as coordinator) since 2008.

Hi! I'm Lithuanian and also very proud to work for Jolla! Been asked by my friends and family that they'd love to see and use Sailfish OS in Lithuanian, so would like to nominate myself as a candidate to coordinate Lithuanian translations: engage my compatriots to help translating, discuss those tough-to-localise IT terms, and accept the best translation for a given string, if many variants come up :)

Hi. I am Lithuanian, waiting for my Jolla C. My wife uses Jolla phone.

I would like to participate translating Sailfish OS to Lithuanian language.

I have got translation experience in the fields technical equipment and natural sciences. Have no direct experience in software translations, but this field interests me as well.

Ta_das ( 2016-06-16 12:35:33 +0300 )edit

@sledges When Lithuanian translation will go on and when it could be ready? It seems has been stagnating more than a year. Can I help more with it?

Hi @misc11! Keyboard layout requests/submitting is done here: https://together.jolla.com/question/124266/keyboard-contributions-for-inclusion-in-sfos/ I just spoke to Pekka, he confirmed that it is possible to have two layouts (e.g. one country's official, and the other used by the most people :D ) I have the same situation with Lithuanian :)

sledges ( 2016-05-25 13:21:57 +0300 )edit

@sledges hey, i know. i just mentioned the keyboards to show there is already community support for this language.

misc11 ( 2016-05-25 15:04:27 +0300 )edit

sure, but what I'm saying is that if you go that little extra step and email those files to Pekka, bg keyboard can be included in as soon as the sfos upgrade after next ;)

I did not find Bulgarian keyboard in the phone 2.0.4.14. I installed the one from openrepo and it works just fine

Esperanto

I would love to see Esperanto added. It's by far the most used constructed language of the world, and really easy to learn. Support for it's 6 special characters (ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ, ŭ) on the keyboard would be great to have as well. The Linux distros on the PC already support it, and I'm really missing it's support on Sailfish.

Would anyone like to step up and be the coordinator? (is the main reason this language still hasn't been added :)

Keyboard requests go to Pekka: https://together.jolla.com/question/124266/keyboard-contributions-for-inclusion-in-sfos/?answer=128114#post-id-128114

Artificial languages (Pirate, Klingon, ...)

At Jolla we are still assessing the possibility to have such languages that do not have their own POSIX locale definition (meaning that days of week, month names etc would not get localised). If you are an expert in such integration, let's work together! Here's the first link I got from fledermaus on #sailfishos IRC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codes_for_constructed_languages on the subject, yet still nothing about the POSIX itself (think localegen)

In the worst case we'll just resort to UK English for the locale-related bits...
