(this thread is reviewed on a monthly basis)

Q: How can I suggest a new language?
A: Add an answer below, if you have checked it hasn't been requested yet.

Q: My language was added to the translation tool, great thanks! How can others and myself enjoy translating it the most?
A: The answer is here.

Q: My language hasn't been added yet :(
A: Ensure it has a coordinator assigned, and if not, nominate yourself. Then we'll add your language to the tool.

Q: What is a coordinator?
A: The answer is here.

Q: How can I test the translation on my device?
A: Ping @martonmiklos and ask to build an rpm for your language. If desired, the localisation packages will be published on OpenRepos. You could also manage the RPM build by yourself. Here you can find the scripts used for building the current packages.

Cheers!

Cantonese (Hong Kong)

In Hong Kong, Macau and many Chinese societies in Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, USA and Europe, Cantonese is one of the most spoken languages and is the mother-tongue of 120 million people around the world. In contrast to the written Chinese (Hong Kong) locale, Cantonese gives users great familiarity and extra friendliness, and hence would improve user engagement of the OS.

Cantonese system UI is rare in any other OSes. By offering Cantonese UI in Sailfish OS, we set ourselves #unlike to any others and would create great potential exposure in Cantonese-based media.

To kick-start the translation, we can base upon on the current Chinese (Hong Kong) and verbalise them. There's also a small but engaging Jolla user community in Hong Kong who can help with the translations --- just as how we helped with the development of the Dolphin Chinese input methods in Sailfish OS; and the Traditional Chinese community translation package for N900.

Languages of India

We're currently looking at finally adding these to the Community Pootle. As 'Indian languages' is far too broad an umbrella, please create individual answers for each language to which you could contribute.

Serbian (Cyrilic)

Amongst other things, I [saleki] am coordinator or team member for some Meego and Linux apps on Transifex including MeeCast, Tweetian,Qneptunea, Cutegram... I can coordinate translation for Sailfish OS too, both for cyrilic and latin Serbian.

With Latin Serbian available Sailfish would be one step ahead of Android. Should be preeeetty easy to get an automatic Cyrillic -> Latin transliteration going anyway.

Yes! It's very simple. 1 to 1 character mapping.

saleki ( 2016-05-15 00:47:39 +0300 )edit

Just to be clear, Serbian and Sorbian are two different languages. Thanks :)

Ok. I got coordinator status for unofficial-jolla-translations - Serbian language on transifex. If you want to contact me there my nicknameis is also saleki. Lets start translating and show our will :)

Korean

There's already two working keyboards and an unofficial Korean translation in open repos. This would be a great starting point for this language!

Hi! Keyboard requests/submissions are done via https://together.jolla.com/question/124266/keyboard-contributions-for-inclusion-in-sfos/ by sending Pekka an email. Thanks :)

I maintained translations outside of the Transifex - due to some reasons. And I am the author of unofficial translation and one of the Korean keyboard. Now given that there is an official interface, I can gladly take care of it.

Update: looks like there is no coordinator, can I assume the position?

peremen ( 2016-06-02 21:22:26 +0300 )edit

Just made you the coordinator:)

sledges ( 2016-09-23 12:31:09 +0300 )edit

Hi @peremen !

There was a merged PR on github what I have forgotten about: https://github.com/martonmiklos/unofficial-jolla-translation/pull/7

Do you still want me to release a Korean RPM and deprecate the current one?

martonmiklos ( 2017-05-28 13:03:40 +0300 )edit

@martonmiklos Hi again, I forgot to reply you sooner. Yes, I want to keep sync with other RPMs, and I will publish a transitional package instead.

Arabic language request

Hello Sailors,
I'm a huge fan of Sailfish OS, and I'll be pleased to see it fully translated into Arabic, and I believe that Arabic countries will be an important market in the future.

I will be honored and privileged to translated every part of the OS.

Thank you for suggestion, but I believe we are currently hampered by the right-to-left support in Sailfish OS. I will try to clarify that and get back to you

Hello, Are there any news about adding support for Arabic language? Thanks

Maymo ( 2018-11-28 13:25:56 +0300 )edit

I would like volunteer myself as coordinator for Community Arabic. Pootle username: mad_dev Originally posted on FSO

mad_dev ( 2020-07-20 22:09:50 +0300 )edit

Thank you @mad_dev for your RTL work, I've added Arabic to Pootle, accepted your suggestions (except those with multiple options and plurals), and made you the coordinator.

Arabic plurals formula in Pootle is n==0 ? 0 : n==1 ? 1 : n==2 ? 2 : n%100>=3 && n%100<=10 ? 3 : n%100>=11 ? 4 : 5, and unfortunately all fields should be populated, even if it's written the same way. Leaving at least one of the six fields empty will result in English being shown on device.

To those interested in community's RTL effort, please look here: https://together.jolla.com/question/228890/unofficial-rtl-support-re-opened/ and thanks again @mad_dev!

sledges ( 2020-07-21 15:12:54 +0300 )edit
1

@sledges Thanks for adding me and for the feedback. I'll review the plurals and empty fields. I did touch upon a few concerns I had about plurals early on; I was not aware of a specific syntax to resolve them. Cheers,

For those interested in testing other RTL languages; assuming you have a built package, rtls should work fine(I am constantly updating FILES.txt). If you need assistance building a package, I personally used unofficial-jolla-translation with a little tweaks. Nonetheless, find me here or on FSO if you need additional assistance.

Galician

Hi, I'm the translator for the Galician language in unofficial-jolla-translations, with 91% complete to version 1.1.9.28 (SFOS 2.0 EA), it would be desirable to import the translation progress in this transiflex project if possible.

Nice! That link says "Forbidden Access", but I wonder what export options transifex offers. We are using Pootle tool, and I could import .ts files of this format: https://webtranslateit.com/en/docs/file_formats/qt_linguist_ts

Although a small country, even Microsoft added the language :) Why not Jolla also to stand out. Keyboard to be used would be SF or SG like.

I would like to volunteer to get this working as an official language and keymap, while I think that the keymap will be the first thing to do so that it is usable on the screen and on the TOHKBD which I use, too.

Hi @ds1979, thanks for stepping forward! However we can't proceed without a locale name, would you be able to further enlighten me what is the POSIX locale name for Serbian (Latin)?
